Ultra Sound-Need Advice!

I will be 26 in April. I found a lump in my breast that was about 3cm. After my family dr. felt it he
was extremely worried and said "that really concerns me, it has to come out immediately, im gonna call the surgeon and see when we can get u in. But in the meantime go get your
pre-op tests done and I'm gonna set you up with an ultrasound tomorrow." So
anyway, I got the ultrasound done and the lady who did it(not sure if she was a
tech or MD but she said she could give me results right away), so anyway, first
she came in and talked to me for like 20mins straight about how i was "too young"
and she highly doubts i have breast cancer bc of my age and was actually kind
of patronizing...and im thinking "ok well how about we use that machine
sitting over there that you claim can tell us and find out already instead of
sitting here telling me that u highly doubt that its anything to worry about
only bc of my AGE alone!" I asked her to feel it and she said that she
doesn't need to bc the ultrasound will tell her. Anyway, she said according to
the ultrasound, the big HARD lump i was feeling was just my lobules which are
JUST breast tissue and that there is a little tumor, but its "only 4mm". And
she also said that she saw some cells that COULD be cancerous but she highly
doubts that they are bc of my AGE, so i should just go home and not worry about
it. ok well i just got off the phone with my dr and he says that he is still
concerned and wants it taken out ASAP so idk what to think! And what can an
ultrasound see? Can it really tell anything except if it's a cyst or not?&
since i have no cysts and supposedly there's a 4mm "mass" or whatever w/some
cells supposedly then why did she say "it doesnt look like cancer, you're
too young." but my dr just called me and said he is still concerned and
getting me into the surgeon asap. I'm just really confused! anyone have any
similar experiences? Or any advice? I just don't know what to think now! And I just feel so scared and in the dark! Oh,and also..my left boob(the one w/the tumor, has been soo itchy. But no rash.

    Hi Hun, That woman was not very helpful and if it was me I would go with what your doctor is saying and get and see a breast surgeon. I was told mine was nothing and I kept pushing and I was right. It hurts no one to have these tests and it's better to be safe than sorry. Get the the tests done ASAP that's what I say. Peace of mine that's what you will have.

    Sorry you are going through this. It sucks. I work in a Radiology dept. I don't do ultrasounds. I'm a CT tech. I do know that as techs, and it doesn't matter what kind, we are not legally supposed to be dictating an exam and telling patients results. Yes, we see a lot during our careers but only the MD is supposed to give results. Perhaps it was the MD?



    An ultrasound can tell if something is a cyst based on certain characteristics but I believe the only way to tell if it's cancerous would be to biopsy it. After I had an MRI, which showed some 'activity' in the healthy breast, my BS had me come in for an ultrasound. The tech did an exam, then the breast radiologist did. She found the area of concern and believe it or not, it was about 4mm too! She recommended an MR guided biopsy. I chose to pass on that as I had already decided to have a bmx.



    Don't let them blow you off. Get answers. Good luck to you.

    Hi Valerie,

    According to the main Breastcancer.org site, ultrasound is the best way to find out if the abnormality is solid (such as a benign fibroadenoma or cancer) or fluid-filled (such as a benign cyst). It cannot determine whether a solid lump is cancerous, nor can it detect calcifications.     I agree.  Don't let them blow you off.  Every lump is different, every cancer is different.  Not saying you have cancer but women and girls of ALL ages can get breast cancer.  My uncle is a Family Practitioner and his youngest so far was 17 with DCIS.  Also, the techs are definately not supposed to tell you anything :(  It took two hours of US and Mammograms for the radiologist to finally come in there and confirm they were thinking my lump was cancer (My boob was lit up like a christmas tree with Calcifications)  That being said, there is an 80-85% chance that its benign and we all really hope that it is.  But I would haul ass to a new radiology department for a new scan and a biopsy just to alleviate your fears.  I had my biopsy results the day after they did an ultrasound guided biospy, so it shouldn't take long to find out.  Again, hopefully its nothing, but better to be confident that its nothing!  Hugs!

    Hi there,

    my advice would be to listen to your gut instinct and your doctor.  My fiancee was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer at age 26.  Everyone including her own doctor dismissed her lump as just a cyst because she was too young.  Even the ultrasound she did said it was a cyst.  It was her own intuition that she insisted she get the lump removed then they discovered it was cancer. For piece of mind it is better to be safe and get further tests or get the lump removed.

    After u/s, I was told my lump was just a cyst, but they biopsied and found that it was cancer. The mammo then showed up an 8 cms tumour which the u/s didn't pick up. Push for a biopsy; it's the only way to know for sure what you're dealing with.

    Valerie=Tech it is true that mostly older 50 yr ladies get BC but you could still get it,my mammos were all fine but the Ultra sound showed a suspious shaped item,then did MRI and biopsies confirmed cancer. I say beg do whatever you have to do but get the US and the needle biopsy that way you will know if its cancer or benign junk. You must find out, your life depends on it and they can not tell you anything from the picture,they must see a suspicion on the US and biopsy and have the radiologist and/or pathologist confirm or deny if its cancer. Too many women died cuz their dr didnt believe they were having a heart attack or having breast cancer so dont let them poo poo your intelligence.

    Definately keep pursuing this.  As someone else said that Ultra Sound Tech should not be saying ANYTHING they are not the ones who do the diagnosis, the Radiologist is.  I just had a mammogram and ultrasound done at the end of January, The Radiologist came in after I had both tests (he looked at the films) and told me that if I had just gotten the mammogram done he would have dismissed it is breast tissue but the ultra sound is what found my tumor.  He even could not tell me if it was BC or not just that he thought it needed to be biopsied and that he would have my test results to me referring doctor with-in 2 hours.  I was diagnosed with in a week with breast cancer.  I am 38 years old, no family history of BC, I don't have the gene, I am close to "the" age group but not there yet.  KEEP PUSHING to find out what is going on!  It can and will save your life!!

      I would also file a report against that Technician that is totally inappropriate and unprofessional under ANY circumstance and she has no business being in the medical field.
