Please help me. I had what was supposed to be a prophylatic mastectomy on Tuesday, and I got the path report just now. They found a 1.1 cm IDC grade 2. They are doing more testing and will have more information later on. I have no idea what this means. Please help me.

    Hi farmerlucydaisy,

First thing, take a deep breath. Next, you can read about what IDC means and also how to interpret your pathology report on the main Breastcancer.org site, at the links below. Then, check back here for some great information from the ever-helpful ladies here on the boards.

Hang in there, and we hope this helps!

farmerlucydaisy Your surgeon should be going over your path with you and explain what this all means. Based on what you have posted it appears you have early stage (but of course there will be more tests). Breast cancer is one of the most treatable cancer.

I would give your surgeon a call and let them know you need to understand our pathology. At the very least your surgeons nurse should be able to call and give you an explanation.

Thank you. I am somewhat calmer now. The path is not all in yet, but the BS wanted to call and let me know. We will know more next week. Thanks again.

This sometimes happens… they go in there and find more stuff. Now you know you made the right decision and they removed the cancer. When I got my path I had to wait 6 weeks before they could schedule surgery.

I would ask your BS if he feels you need to make an appointment with an oncologist. They can be very busy so it could take a few weeks. Ideally I would assume you would want to see one about 2 weeks post surgery (and the final path should be in by then).  Given your family history it might not be a bad idea to see one.

Be sure to read the sections the mods pointed out, it will help you understand what's going on.

There are even some questions to ask to ask the doctor.  My MO used bco worksheets when she explained my pathology report -- I keep those worksheets in my cancer notebook along with all my labs and reports.    They came in really handy when I got back together with my former PCP -- she had moved out of state a little before I was diagnosed and has since moved back.  It had all the information along with explanation.

Ask the surgeon for a copy of your path results for your records.  It helps to be an informed patient.

    Good luck.

yes, yes thank you. I do need to get that path report. I am meeting with an ocologist next week. The good thing is that I am healing amazingly well from the MX.
