Thanks for that Farmerlucydaisy...with 5 days still to go the thought of a happy place is a great place to be...
-
Came home this morning after UMX yesterday afternoon. Spent the day sleeping. For the first time ever, I was nauseated after surgery. I think it was from morphine; about midnight I asked for vicadin and that stopped the nausea. Still have a little today, so I'm eating very cautiously. Feel pretty good. I think it really helps that the left side isn't sore.
-
Hi ladies - Great to hear from so many of you!!! Thanks again for your comments. Those of you with surgery tomorrow, you truly will be in my thoughts and prayers tomorrow. Anxious to hear your stories post-op.
I was planning on a uni-mx until I got the results of my post chemo MRI and they found two additional small foci suspcious for cancer. Although we are certain that these new foci are cancer (will know for sure after final pathology) it really scared me. If it is cancer again, it means that chemo did nothing to stop it, and these new lesions will be the fourth lesions found in one breast. If my one breast can make this much cancer, then so can the other. Thus, I made my decision to have them both taken off. Plus, I too have a strong family history with my mother, my aunt, two 2nd cousins, one of which was a male. I am BRCA-neg though.
Six more days...can't believe it!! Again, thank you for all the tips. Please keep them coming.
Hugs to you all!
-
Wild - I know the decision re: uni or bi was difficult but it sounds like your family history is nothing to mess around with. My brother is a gyno onco and brca researcher. He said the male BC could be a marker for a brca mutation. We had some male BC in our family 4 generations back and my bro said that it has prob been flushed from gene pool. I am Brca neg too. That was a relief.
-
i keep telling my husband that the first thing i want to hear fro him post-op is whether or not the nodes are free of cancer. anyone else that way?
I have decided on a bmx with te expanders. also, do you ladies think that it helps to have visitors other than immediate family visiting in the hospital, or do you just need the rest?
wildrumara, your dog. what type is he? 50 years ago we haad a dog that looks just like yours [ginger] and i have never seen one since.
-
Vicky - as it worked out I only had family, but our pastor came during surgery and that was great support for my husband. I'm still waiting on path report. DH and DS stayed overnight w me and that was so special for all. I can tell that my emotions are raw today three days post op, so I will work thru that. Hugs hugs hugs!
-
Hi All,
I am 6 days post MX. Drains came out yesterday and finally got the patholgy report this AM. 30 clear nodes and clear margins. What a huge relief. I think my surgeon went in with a schorched earth policy, leaving nothing behind due to my DX. 30 nodes seems alot and probably accounts for the feeling that I had ants or bugs crawling onmy shoulders earleir in the week.
I still ahve some discomfort, but tylenol is working well, the nauseua the day or so following surgery, was so unpleasant. I was fearfulI would blow out stitches while vomiting. But it has all been doable in retrospect.
To all awaiting sugery, you are in my thoughts in prayers. To those recovering, it does get better day by day.
All be well
Nel

Nel - glad you are doing well....(((hugs))))
-
Glad you're all under control. Yep had the BS whole office laughing about If the Always maxi pad people only knew what we do with their products..LOL. Soaking up spills when you run outta paper towels and just on the way out to the grocers...LOL. Glad my son is away at Paris with his friends, nobody here to be embarrassed but me & the dogs and the fiance and the home health nurse and the weird guy who sits in the park everyday casing my house...hmmm..
-
Hi All,
Hope everyone is doing well today
Vicky,
With regards to having visitors @ the hospital, I thought it was nice, but it made it difficult to rest at times. I do recommend having someone stay with you at all times if possible. It is important to have someone looking out for you as the hospital staff are always overworked and not always as prompt as they should be. Maybe you could suggest certain visting times, or times when you'd prefer not to be disturbed. It seemed like evertime I was ready to take a nap, someone would come to visit.
Farmerlucydaisey and Wildrumara,
I also have a strong family history. My sister is stage 3B and I have an aunt who died of ovarian cancer. I had the genetic testing and am also BRCA negative. I'm sure there must be another yet undiscovered gene that is faulty, but I went the BMX route so I could avoid rads and tamoxifen, and so I wouldn't have to worry as much. I have to say now that I'm done, I'm very pleased with my choice and the whole surgery has been much better than I thought it would be.
I'm wondering how everyone is doing with stamina. I'm feeling really good, and I keep thinking I should be doing more. I went to Kohl's for about an hour yesterday to find some ABD compression garments and ended up in a cold sweat, super weak and frustrated
Is anyone else feeling this way? I know the ABD surgery plays a big part, but I'm kinda of a hyper geek by nature, so it's just so weird. My Ps also told my I can only walk and do gentle stretches until I'm 6-8 weeks out. If it were summer, that wouldn't be a problem, but it's a little harder to walk in the winter. One can only go to the mall so often, at least without going broke
Thinking of you all and hoping you have a great weekend!!!

Please please help me, I just got my path report and my so called prophylatic mastectomy turned out to be IDC grade 2. I have no idea what this means.
-
Hi Farmerlucydaisy,
I'm so sorry to hear about the IDC. I wanted to respond as I know it is such a scary feeling with no one to talk to. What do you want to know? I'd be happy to help you look for the answers!!
Carolyn
-
I have no idea what to do. I have done high risk screening for 20 years. I had two MRI's in the last two years, about 6 mammos, ultrasounds. I had my breasts removed as a preventive measure. What the hell. What they found is 1.1 cm IDC grade 2. Does anyone know what this means?
-
Farmerlucydaisy,
The grade 2 has to do with the type of cells. It isn't as agressive as grade 3. It means that the cells are differentiated less like normal breast cells and are dividing more rapidly.
Did the MD say what kind of margins they found? What did he want you to do?
I hope this is of some help.
Carolyn
-
I don't know about margins. The breast is gone. This sucks. They are going to do more work on the tumor and let me know next week. They are also referring me to an oncologist. This really sucks.
-
Farmerlucydaisy,
It does suck, I'm really sorry you have to deal with this!!!
I think they are probably going to do the oncodx test and also the hormonal markers which will help to decide if and what kind of treatment may be needed.
I think treatment is based on the margins, if the tumor is estrogen, progesterone or her2neu positive, and tumor size.
Did they do lymph node biopsies with your MX?
Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers and if you need help researching, I'd be happy to help. I know there are plenty of people on this site that have personal knowledge who might be of more help, but I'd be happy to help if you need it.
Carolyn
-
Thank you Carolyn. My husband called back and got more info. The tumor is 1.1 cm grade 2. They are testing the receptors and what not now. The BS said mammos and MRI typically pick up stuff around 1 cm. They did not test nodes before, but will decide about that with oncologist. Thanks again.
BTW - the really sucks!
-
Regarding Always maxi pads, the most bizarre use I've seen was when I was given a cold, wet one on an airplane to put around my neck when I was feeling lightheaded. Talk about embarrassing...
Farmerlucy--IDC means invasive ductal carcinoma or cancer. Yes, it really sucks to hear that after your PBMX. It is a good thing that you had the surgery. It may be recommend that you have a sentinel node biopsy.
I had my BMX on 2/6. I went to the surgeon today and had to have a seroma drained. It was on the cancerous side where I also had all the lymph nodes removed, so not a big surprise. The drain had slowed way down on that side, but I think there must have been something blocking it that could not be seen and the surgeon thought it was okay to take it out last week. The aspiration process was not bad. On my prophylactic side, I have skin necrosis. It is really nasty looking and somewhat smelly. I am going to have to put a cream on to help the dead skin turnover (Silverene or something like that), as well as take an antibiotic. I am showing early signs of lymphedema according to my PT, and I'm having a LE eval this weekend. Does it ever end? This all really sucks.
Positive thoughts for all of you just out of surgery and all of those still waiting. February is close to over! Yay!!!! -
Yep thats right farmerlucy, the IDC grade 2 is one grade higher than me. I had it and got 2 nodes sent to lab both were negative and clean margins, they are sending me and my reports to the oncologist next wk and expect him to put me on Tamoxifen but if you only have one breast done they usually send you to radiation,as I had both done there is nothing left to radiate so they try to decide if chemo or Tamox usually. Hope yours turns out ok and you can get away with only Tamox, its not fun to take I guess...ask the others on here who take it??
-
Thanks Layla. I had both done. We will find out more next week. I was afraid something was lurking in there and I was right.
-
Hi All,
Well, no surprise. The darn drain is still in. This is like day 21 of the hostage crisis!
wrsmith2x: I see that you had BC in 2007 and then again in 2011. In 2007 it was caught at a stage 1 and in 2011 it was caught at a Stage 2a? I am asuming that I will be on a hypervigilant regimen of monitoring my remaining breast via mammos, ultrasounds etc. Is that what happened with you after the first episode in 2007? It just seems that given my history, they better detect if anything starts acting up in myremaining "clear" breast before it gets to a 3 cm size. Any klwords of experience for me? Thnx
farmerlucydaisy; on breastcancer.org above the pink title band you might want a refresher and select the white tab about diagnosis and breast cancer types. They have a really good print out for what questions to ask your oncologist regrading the final pathology report/s. You needn't read every single item. Just open it up and decide if it gets to the heart of your questions. Based on your pathology, it's a good thing you had both breasts removed. Were you thinkiong you weren't going to need any future preventive treatment (chemo, rads, or hormone therapy)? If you were expecting that you were going to have follow-up treatmentpost the BMX anyway, then BC showing up in the non-suspicious breast may or may not alter what you were going to do anyway. It good for your BC team to have all the information that they got from your "sneaky" breast. It will likely help you get better treatment. I don't recall what your node status was. Wishing you well.
Cajmi. That sounds about right. You had DCIS, zero nodes. I had IDC & DCIS zero nodes. Makes sense that youwon't require HT.
Diximine30. Thank you for the fill information. Super timely. My PS will fill me with 50cc on Tuesday. He showed me the magnet dealie and located my valve under my skin. It turned out to be directly under my scar. I asked him if he meant to do that? He said the TE valve can shift a bit but that it being directly under the scar is an area where I would have the least sensation. Aparently the valve can move a little bit. Will see if stays put for Tuesday.
Onc DX: Dropped in without an appt. at my onc because her office is down street from PS office when I was done with that appt. Good thing. They had to remind the pathology lab that their office that they were rapidly approaching their time limit to do the onc DX. They hadn't started it yet. I will take up to 7 biz days before I get the results. Just another wait.
Nel & Galsal- congrats on the drain removals from your delighted( although envious) Feb. sister.
Mary625- That really stinks! What lousy developments. So sorry to hear. As you likely well know there is a lymphedema information tab (in additon to a discussion board for the LE ladies) in case you need it at breastcancer.org.
Here are ladies who we have not heard from after their surgeries: HardtimeNY, Likeachickadee, elliegk, dragonfly,Tangela, TJP071,Hopeful123, and I am unsure if Lynnbrooks1 (2-13-12) and jocelynlaly (BMX) 2-16-12 have posted? The others would be too soon.

farmerlucy-So sorry about your patho report; once you learn more and have a treatment plan in place, I think you will feel better
hang in there; be strong
-
November,
Good to hear from you. I think you had internal bleeding or something at some point? How have you been?
Deborah2012
-
Almost time to remove the bandage and see what the battlefield looks like. DH is out running errands, perhaps on purpose to let me be alone when I see it. I'm really nervous and it looks like some of the gauze is stuck. Hopefully it will losen with water. Then a shower!
-
Hi Deborah2012-yes I did have bleeding on the R surgical site. I had to go back to the OR; the surgeon re-opened the site and cleaned it. I lost a lot of blood and I already had iron deficiency anemia. I got tired very easily the first 2 weeks after surgery but I am much better now. I had blood work done today, not sure of the results yet but I feel great.
How are things for you?
-
Home and resting after bmx yesterday. It hurts quite a bit, but that is to be expected. Wren44, I am envious, no shower for me until after at least next wednesday.
All the reading and prep helped so much, it is so nice to know what to expect. I have 4 drains, which I am not crazy about, but such is life. Just trying to follow directions and keep positive. Hope you are all doing well, thanks so much for the invaluable information and support!
-
LLinAz-glad you are home; speedy recovery; try to stay on top of the pain for the first few days because it is more difficult to control otherwise but you should start feeling better in a couple days; don't forget the stool softners either and drink plenty of water which would help with bowel movements as well
-
LLinAZ -- welcome to the other side :-)
I didn't get to shower until ALL my drains were out....3 weeks!! I was a black belt in sink bathing!?!
Drains STINK period!! I had 4 after surgery, finally got 3 of them out at my 2 week post op and the last one at 3 week appt. I felt so free!!!
If you are like most of us there will be a few emotional days...just go with it...when your done, put your positive panties back on and move forward.
We are here for you.....speedy recovery wishes to you!!
-
Deborah2012 -- My valve moved a little from the first fill to the second. Maybe next time it will be where I am numb....maybe :-) Let me know how your fill goes.
-
Farmer lucy- im sorry about your other breast. I felt really good after i got out yesterday, real sore now and wide awake butnstill doingood. The girls look a little funny but im hoping is just uneven swelling. Definitely glad to have it behind me but im dreading having to get up!
