hand specialist
Last June and July I had a very bad case of cellulitis in my hand and arm. It twisted my hand and made my 4 fingers not to be able to straighten out. Since then I have been exerising them and my hand is 80% better.
Just got a call from the hand specialist in Antigonish. Monday at 3:10 My son is going to take me. Will let you know how I make out. If you know what I should ask please let me know? Should post this now. Is cortisone safe? I also have arthritis in my hand? hugs jinky

Hi ROBO, I sure will. I don't know what BMX is? Thanks lymphedema hugs Jinky xxxxxoooo

Hi jinky, ask the specialist if wearing a resting splint at night may help maintain your range of movement in your hand. Hope you get a good plan from him. Fell free to pm if you want any info. Best wishes steph x

Hi Cynsister, I already tried that and it made no difference. Thanks anyway. le hugs jinky

Well I was at the plastic surgeon yesterday he looked at my hand. He said to keep exercing my hand and fingers as I am. Surgery won't help or cortisone. I could make a fist very fast and he thought that was good. He thinks it will come back and I am determined it will. Thanks for the support. le hugs jinky xxxxoooo

Mine was caused from the cellulitis infection as my hand was twice as big. Wish now I had taken a picture of it as I thought it would burst. It's coming better and I know it will get better as it dare not get me mad. I have to use it more ,as I started using my other hand more. lol thanks everyone le hugs jinky

Hi Jinky,
I also have problems with my LE hand and I noticed that daily exercises and stretches of Hands/fingers/wrists have helped a lot in releaving stiffness, cramps, and numbness numbness. Here are several links from the Ohio State University Medical Center where you can find exercises:
https://patienteducation.osumc.edu/Documents/sixpack.pdf - Six pack Active Hand exercises
https://patienteducation.osumc.edu/Documents/hnds-fin.pdf - Hand and Finger exercises
https://patienteducation.osumc.edu/Documents/thra-put.pdf - Thera-putty exercises
https://patienteducation.osumc.edu/Documents/tendon-gliding.pdf - Tendon gliding
These videos also show several hand exercises for Arthritis.

Five minutes several times every day will definitely improve your strength, flexibility, ROM... Remember persistence pays off.
Take care

Nitocris, Thanks so much for these links! I also have a great deal of stiffness and tightness in my left LE hand. I believe these exercises will certainly help! I have downloaded the PDF files and checked out the YouTube videos. The videos are very well done! I especially like the "Stronger Seniors" series of videos by Anne Burnell. Thanks again for posting the links!

These are great....The second exercise I can't do....I can't lift my 3 fingers when my hand is flat on the table.....thank you so much le hugs jinky
-
Nitocris, those are all so DOABLE! The pictures are clear and they're even easy to remember. I've been wishing I had a simple hand-stretching routine I could do throughout the day, so these really meet the need. Thank you!

When I had hand therapy after my broken hand, these were the exercises I did, and the OT didn't have images like this. I did toss the therapy putty when I was done, but silly putty will do.
Great instructions!
I've always like the Ohio State instructions (and I went to Michigan...) and here's the home page--the hand exercises aren't on that page, I found them separately:

Wow these are sooo great. Use both of your hands when you do them and you will find you can do the exercises better. For me anyway. le hugs jinky

I am sure these excerises will help me as I can't pick up small things and I want to improve my range of motion. I printed them off. Disappointed the hand sp never checked my hand more and never thought pt would help me. I feel if anything is going to help me more these will. Will be surprised how my hand will be in 6 weeks. I will post then Nitocris. Thanks again le hugs jinky

Jinky,
I'm not a PT or OT, but I've worked with a lot people who've been rehabbing their hands, from things like severe frostbite and stroke. My suggestion is not to compare day-to-day, but week-to-week. I've seen people get discouraged when actually they were making great progress but couldn't see it because it was a little at a time.
I've been swimming at Antigonish, brrrrr.

Hi,
Still about hand/finger exercises. This week-end, I was discussing with a friend of mine who is a sign language teacher. I was explaining her that because many of us have very stiff and painful joints in our hands due to LE and the various anti-hormonal medecines we are given, we need to do easy exercises daily to keep our mobility and flexibility. She said: "you know you do get a good hand/finger "workout" when you practice the sign language alphabet..."
I thought this was a really good idea! I tried it, repeating the whole serie from A to Z on both hands. Very good for coordination.
So here it is: the American sign language alphabet.

Hi Nitocris,
These are great. Alot I can't do but I will keep trying each day. Thanks for posting the pictures. I love pictures. le hugs jinky

Jinky,
More challenging than it looks, not only for LE hand but also for the good one. I have practiced several times, but my hands are too contracted, strangely enough the "good" one is tighter than the LE one. It works better when the hand is relaxed. Here is the link to the main website page. They have alphabet posters in two colours and also black and white and a big "I love you" sign at the bottom of the page. also a link to the alphabet slideshow.
