    Been a busy two days off. Went to yoga on Wed and did some exercises at home. On the floor and the TB said to be like a table and my dog proceeded to put her toy on my back!! lol My friend needed hlhelp to pick out a storm door, then she wanted to go to Peir 1 and then to Sears that is closing and she had to see if anything jumped out for her to buy. They night before she got a new frig and grill. Finally went out to dinner and then I had a church Bible study. Today I had to go to the dermatologists, then I got my hair cut and had to go over to Susan's to work on her vacuum, then out to dinner and sat and talked. It was a good couple of days and then I came home and walked th Dd. working days for the next 6 days.

    Welcome newbies - Just do what you can and keep moving.  The rads made me tired but I walked to my treatments just to keep exercising.(It was only 4 blocks)

    I did it too Sping. Hatha yoga, that is. However, I am still sore from last night's walking home in my high heels. Anyway, tomorrow is my 1 year PFC day. I am thinking about getting a massage after my appointment with my breast surgeon. Yeah, maybe a bit of foot reflexology to ease my foot pain would help me forget the memory of chemo.

    More dancing with baby girl last night while babysitting! LOL  My ankle/foot area was sore this morning, I must have really busted some moves, haha!!  She will spend the night with us tomorrow night so will get some more dancing in.

    Druanne, LOVE the image of you dancing with your DD.  I have 2 DD's, 28 and soon to turn 26 and a little 1 year old granddaughter.  I've danced with my DD's and GDD all their lives, I love to move and groove.  Hope that RADS are gentle to you.  I did OK during rads!

    Spring, how is your LE??  All better I hope.  I think my last bit of hand swelling is slowly going down (hope its not just my imagination). 

    Joy, you were a shopping fool! LOL!  Good luck with your upcoming work schedule, find some time for YOU!

    Survivor, congrats on your One Year PFC!!!  Feels sooooooo unvbelievably good!  Have to tell you that you were in my ear yesterday, so I went up the stairs a couple of times in your honor! Tongue out

    I will go up again in just a few...

    Tonight is a night of rest, going to tear it up tomorrow! I survived 2 weeks now of the new project! Yay! 

    Survivor - Congrats on your one year PFC anniversary! PFC, I always get such a giggle when I see that!!! :)

    Hi Everyone, This is a very lively thread, I keep losing track of what everyone is doing. Congrats to those of you enjoying anniversaries: love hearing about them. I'm in the process of mixing up my workouts and getting better with my diet. I would really like to lose the 10 lbs I still seem to be carring around. I keep craving sweets (with I never did before). I tried the Jillian Michaels DVD. It was a good change and tomorrow, wait for it, I'm going to go to a Zumba class. If you all new what a crappy dancer I am, you would all be laughing now.

    45 on the elliptical tonight, I felt very strong after my night of rest last night. Very nice. Freezing outside! Bike riding is a distant memory! Winter is roaring this weekend, but actually, next weekend is already looking promising. I think this is our last cold blast.... fingers crossed!

    CDairth, mixing workouts is a great idea. I am using "myfitnesspal.com" to track what I eat and how much I exercise and I've lost 6.5 pounds since thanksgiving! Slow but steady progress. Better than gining 6.5 pounds is how I look at it!! I also wanted to lose 10 and just have a few to go now... It's harder the closer you get!!

    Greetings to all on a cold and windy Sunday morning! At least, that is the weather in Brooklyn. I walked to work and had tears coming down on my cheeks b/c it was so freezing. But got my early work-out done. Later, I will do yoga. (Oh, yesterday I did 20 jumping jacks at work every hour or so. Shhh! Don't tell anyone. I just did 50 in the conference room again. Yay!)

    Cath  - Zumba is fun, not matter how you do it. I bet you are better than me. I was born with two left legs.  Kari- Combining grandma duties with workouts ? So cool!  You should come up with a workout plan and make a dvd for sale. Excellent idea! Springie- You go girl! You inpsire me in so many ways you can't even imagine!

    On a sidenote: I thought to bring this book excerpt to your attention about the benefits of turmeric and ginger and other goodies for us. I think I will get the entire book soon. "Waking the Warrior Goddess" by Dr. Horner .

    About to get on the elliptical for 45 minutes! Freezing outside here! I had to cut some of my fresh flowers and bring them in, they were pooping out in the cold. 

    Survivor, I take a super curcumin supplement ( among a lot of other things )... :)

    It is cold down here on the coast. It was 22 when I walked the dog this morning. This wind goes right through a body. Cath - good luck with Zumba. I have two left feet and no rythm but I still have fun. Last night I was dancing with a 2 year old with Happy Feet. 

    I will start my exercising more on Monday. Taking tonight off. Hugs to all

    YAY for zumba'ing, dancing, mixing it all up!!  Lots of dancing and squating with baby girl!  Great idea Survivor, maybe I could get rich or famous with a dvd, LOL!  Joy, dancing with little ones makes you smile!  

    I've gone to the 3rd floor twice this morning, will walk at lunch and will go to yoga tonight.

    It's great to see everyone is taking the message about too much sitting to heart and being totally proactive!  I've also been trying to get up more often and dance to a song or two in between periods of sitting.  I also walked for 1.5 hrs. this a.m. -- probably 5 miles.  

    Thanks for the reminder about turmeric and ginger, survivor!  I just read an article that says green tea is bad for us due to an excessive amount of flouride and aluminum in it???  I decided not to post the link because I'm not sure how credible the author is.  But if anyone drinks a lot of green tea, I can send you the link if you're interested.  I don't drink much green tea (mostly white & rooibos), but I have used it as a supplement, and I drink decaf coffee, which, evidently, can have the same problem from the decaffinating process.  Oh, boy... one more thing to try and figure out...    Deanna

    Hello, Ladies - I'm new to this thread....

    I'm ten weeks out from my BMX w/ TEs, and I STILL feel exhausted sometimes! A month before my surgery, I got very sick, and was in bed almost up until the day of my BMX. Then I came home and was in so much pain, I tried to move as little as possible.

    But the day the unrelenting, excruciating pain turned into painful discomfort, I started walking with DH. Sometimes we just went to the mailbox and back. Lately, we've been walking around our block two or three times. I hate it because I still feel like an old lady...I have no endurance, no balance, and I'm winded by the time we get home. (Although he did say yesterday that we were walking faster than we had the day before.)

    I'll be starting Kaiser's Weight Management Program next month - it's an 82 week program, carefully, medically-supervised,  and the first 16 weeks are meal replacements (Optifast). I need to lose 40 - 50 pounds. Right now I'm in training by eating smaller portions, and trying to drink a gallon of water a day.

    When I saw the title of this thread, I remembered what I told my doctors when I decided to join the program: I've had no success with diets because I lose my motivation. Same with exercise. But in September 2011, I got my wake-up call. There are many things I can't control about my breast cancer diagnosis. But other things I can, like getting down to a normal weight, getting rid of this belly fat, and starting a whole new way of eating.

    The way I look at it, this diet will be just another part of my breast cancer treatment.

    The exercise? I'm workin' on it!!! Looking forward to hearing new ideas!!!

    I like this thread!!  I could use some motivation as well.  My Lumpectomy and SNB was over 2 weeks ago and the surgeon has cleared me for resuming my workouts with small weights.  I however, have no energy and feel tired.  How long after surgery did you ladies begin your regular workouts?

    Hi Everyone,  I have now gone over the edge with "mixing it up." I played laser tag yesteray. Apparently, everyone loves to shoot at me. I lost big time, but it was a lot of fun and since I didn't know what I was doing I ran around a great deal. 

     Blessings20, make exercise fun and part of your life if you can. That's my advice (for what it is worth). Find something active to do that you enjoy. There are a few of us trying to lose weight on this thread. We'll do it together.

     Mamglam, I started working out quite soon after surgery, maybe two days later. I didn't use arms though, just jogging and various kinds of cardio for a week or two and then added some minor arm work. Check with your Doc about arms, and exercise in general. Everyone is different.

    I might have overdone last night and my armpit is a bit swollen today. Does this mean I could have LE? I don't know, maybe it's just swelling from finishing rads a week ago?

    Hi all, I have been slack since Holidays, but when weather is warmer I walk about three days a week and I lose weight effortlessly and eat most things I want so three days work for me and I do monday wednesday and friday, I need monday after the weekend splurge so I guess each one is diffrent and ladies I have been cancer free for 18 yrs (Praise God) msphil    (idc,stage 2. 3 nodes involved, L mast with chemo and rads and 5 yrs on Tamoxifen, God Bless All

    Hi Blessing and Mamglam! Welcome!

    I started in PT while I was in chemo/rads treatment and I was exercising all through-out. This included walking 45 minutes a day and light weights and other exercises. New research (or new 3.5 years ago! ha!) shows that people do better if they keep active during treatment.  Exercise is just good for you all over. There are studies that show that  women who exercise have a greatly reduced incidence of recurrence - it has a bigger impact than chemo and rads! 

    Anyway, this is what I believe and why I do it. There is no down side to exercise! 

    All that said, tonight is a night of rest for me. (I exercise ~5 - 6 days a week when it's warm and ~5 when cold, ha!) Tomorrow I'm going to rip it up on the elliptical!

    Blessing and mamglan: please take it easy at first. Be kind to yourselves. But to answer your question: after surgery, I used to take 15-30 minute walks that I extended each day. I used to sit and catch my breath a lot here and there. Eventually, when I felt better and stronger, I did some restorative-gentle yoga moves in a class where the instructor modified a lot of the asanas. Those yoga poses eventually helped to rebuild my strength.  But I only started to do those about 3-4  months after surgery. During chemo I think I only did my walks.  

    Speaking of moving, and walking: I walked to work and back (no high heels today Surprised), did a few kundalini yoga spins during work and I also did my 90 minutes bhakti yoga class. It was jam-packed. There was very little space to move. Still, I did all the asanas like others, but took a short break here and there. Herceptin is not as easy on my body as I thought it would be.

    Deanna- I am interested in the article. Please post it. I drink a lot of green tea. Mostly during the first part of the day and try to get organic tea most of the time. After watching the documentary "All In This Tea" I am now very careful about anything that comes from China.

    Welcome Blessings, mamglam and msphil!  So nice to see some new "faces."  mamglam, I'm in awe of anyone even thinking about getting back to working out when you're just 2 weeks out from surgery!  I didn't really get serious about it until after chemo & rads, and even then, it was slow going at first.  Blessings, one thing that helped me tremendously in the beginning and still does is something another Motivation thread member (Kate) shared with us -- something she calls the "10 Minute Rule" -- which is basically, no matter how unappealing it is to get out there, commit to do it for 10 mins.  Most of the time, that 10 mins is enough to get you going.  And, if not, at least you've had 10 mins. and you've reinforced the habit.  Also, if you look back through some earlier pages, you'll see that one of our members has lost about 100 lbs., and exercise played a really big part in her success. And msphil, thank you for sharing that exercise has been part of your bc fighting arsenal!

    Well, I just got back from the gym with DH.  1/2 hr. on a bike (4 miles) and another 1/2 hr. of weights.  Now I can thoroughly enjoy the onion soup DH is making for dinner!      Deanna

    Welcome blessings, mamglam and msphil!!  Deanna, you said everything I wanted to say perfectly, so I will have to say "ditto" to your words.

    Report back each day, no matter if you do one minute or 30 minutes, because you will find yourself being accountable for exercise!  No joke...these gals are in my ear a lot during the day (not literally) and that motivates me to want to thrive!!!!

    Yoga last night felt great!  Even did the down dogs and planks.  Hand swelling just a tinge!  PROGRESS! YAY!

    Walk at lunch coming up in about 30 minutes and babysitting tonight, I see some dance/squats in my near future Wink

    Happy Valentines Day you gorgeous moving ladies!

    Today I ate three small chocolates with caramel. That's the extent of my living it up for Valentines day! Quite a treat for me.

    45 on the elliptical! It was a great, strong workout because I had a rest day yesterday. Yoga tomorrow!

    cdairth - "Exercise" and "Fun" have never really been used in the same sentence in my case, but you are absolutely right. I think walking is just about all I can handle right now, but if we find a really pretty place to walk, that could make a difference! We're headed to the beach in a few weeks, and we really love to walk on the sand.

    Springtime - thanks for the welcome! Love the info about exercise reducing the risk of recurrence....that's a great motivator right there!

    Survivorwoman - thanks to you, too, for the welcome. I am most impressed with you ladies who exercised all through chemo and rads. I did not need either one, but I am so out of shape I am starting from square one. My gosh - you did a lot today! LOL at the balancing lady....

    dlb823 - LOVE the ten minute rule! Even I can do that....

    kfinnegan - Accountability....o.k.! No weenieing out, huh? When I was in my 20's I did yoga religiously every day. Now, when I think of some of the positions I used to get into all I can hear in my mind is my old bones snapping. But someone mentioned finding a gentler yoga class....that might be a good idea!


    O.K. what did I do today? A few loads of laundry, then cleaned up the house before the cleaning crew got here, then DH and I went to our Senior Lunch at church. Technically, we're eligible as Seniors, but most folks there have about 20 or 30 years on us. He and I are both servers, but I got a reprieve since my surgery. We feed anywhere from 50 - 70 seniors a month. Then we went out to dinner, and all I had was soup. After that, we went for our walk....twice around the block, but when we got back to the house, I realized I wasn't gasping for breath, and we did go at a snappy pace! So maybe I am getting a little better!

    Thanks to everyone here for the warm welcome, and for staying healthy, staying active, and acting as cheerleaders!!

    I got through yesterday with just a bit of chocolate laced cheddar cheese (delicious!) and some Tiramisu added to my usually healthful diet.  Both were worth every calorie/bite!    

    Survivor, I'm guessing the last photo you posted above may have been Photoshopped. Do you know?  Either way, it's fabulous, but would be super inspiring if it was real!       Deanna

    Deanna, first off I have to say THANK YOU for the link to the Silver Pen blog!  I clicked through and read every entry she wrote of her FBC joiurney!!!!!  I sent some info to my DD's also on the prevention advice.

    Cath, where in Calif are you?  I'm in Nor Cal.  Funny, I hear my bones creaking on a daily basis, and my knee cries when going upstairs, which by the way, I did this morning and my legs are way too sore to go up there again today. Squats with baby girl last night was enough for me.  So great that you and your DH help out at the senior lunches!!  Very cool!

    No lunch walk for me today, coworker took me out for Thai food, so good but very spicy, had a coughing/snot fit at first.  Soooo not attractive, haha!  Babysitting again tonight, so more arm work for sure.

    90 yoga. Work is really draining me, to the point it's not natural!! I have to somehow get a handle on this. The new project BLECH!!!! Even Yoga didn't seem to revive me. That's when I know something is wrong!

    Tomorrow I'm going to tear it up on the elliptical!
