Prosthesis and Radiation

Options

I am 6 days out from my BMX and hoping to be fitted for protheses when healed. I am having radiation and learned yesterday that due to lymph node involvement, I will probably have to have multiple planes of radiation which I'm guessing means more zaps but possibly in different areas. I won't see the RO for another 10 days or so. Can extensive radiation prevent and delay the fitting of the prostheses? I am so looking forward to getting them. I opted not to reconstruct for a variety of reasons, but am even more certain of my decision now that I have learned the extent of the lymph node involvement and the importance of radiation for my treatment.

I waited until after radiation was finished (and I was healed from the effects of it) before I got fitted for the prosthesis.  This was the 2nd time I'd had rads (previously had them on the other side), and I am very fair, so I knew that I was probably going to burn pretty badly, and there was no way I was going to be able to wear either a prosthesis or a bra of any type while I was getting radiation.

I did get bad burns, and it was much more comfortable to wear a loose t-shirt under a big shirt during radiation treatment.   I think most RO's recommend you don't wear a bra during treatment.
