Hair looks terrible even without chemo
Can just surgery alone damage your hair? Mine used to be nice and silky and straight. Now it's dry, brittle and won't do anything. I don't know if it's the 6 hour anesthesia from the DMX or the 6 weeks I took the Femara but it's looking pretty bad.
I cut it from pretty long to a bob and still it looks terrible. Thinking about going short again. Anyone else notice this after surgery and/or Femara?

I am so sorry to hear you are having this problem, but I am also so relieved to hear there is someone else like me.
First of all, I had 2 mastectomies, 18 months apart, and my halr, about 1/3 fell out after the surgeries...no chemo, no radiation.
Now it is brittle, I have scalp dryness and flaking, it doesn't lay right anymore...and I have no idea what is happening.
My doctor felt it was the extreme stress as well as the anesthesia...I too have gone from very long to a short bob....
I hope we get some answers...it is not a big problem compared to what so many women deal with, I respect this, but it is a breast cancer related problem which knocks the self esteem.

Are you on any hormone therapy?
-
Try Nioxin shampoo and conditioner.
-
yeah.. hair is a problem.
i rub a tiny amount of coconut oil into my hands and rub it into my hair the day before, of, shampooing.. it really helps to moisterize and make it glossy.. (i just use organic coconut oil from the health food store.. it's quite solid below 70 degrees... but rubbing it in your hands quickly dissipates. i brush my hair then with a natural boar's bristle brush to distribute it.. it actually works pretty well as a styling gel'.... if you use just a tiny bit.. (like 1/8th of a teaspoon for a bob) and rub it well into your hands and hair.. starting from the bottom so your top hairs do not look greasy. coconut oil in hair product stores often contains petrolatum.. which i avoid.

Hi,
Not to sound like a commercial but I am using Sea-Chi hair growth formula. It can be purchased on their website - seachi.com
Everyone I know has been commenting on my hair. It is stronger, longer and softer than before chemo. I just got an offer if you order before Thursday, Feb. 16th and use the code LOVE2012 you will get 40% off. Their products are expensive normally but all natural...

I hear ya! I lost a third of my hair after my mets diagnosis and after radiation and starting Faslodex. The thinning seems to have stopped, but the hair I have left is dryer (and grayer) than before. Even this time last year, my hair was thick, shiny and manageable. Not now.
So you would think with everything else going on with mets, my hair issues wouldn't be such a big deal, but it matters! If we don't think we look good, it's really hard to feel good. And even with mets, feeling good is a big priority.
I'm experimenting with shampoos and conditioners. I've found some that do help with body and shine. I haven't gone really short yet--I don't think that will make me feel better, as I really like the shoulder-length. I do trim my ends a lot-- take an inch off every few weeks, which adds body.

Surgery and anesthesia can effect your hair. Some people even experience hair loss. It shouldn't be permanent if it's from surgery.
-
Try taking Biotin. It should help revitalize and re-grow your hair. I personally had no issues after 110 1/2 hours of anesthesia, but I know it can affect some people.

Thank you ladies!
-
I would like to thank everyone too... I bought the nioxin today...I didn't know they made a conditioner so I have to look for that. And the coconut oil...
I will try all of the ideas...this has been frustrating to finally be cancer free and to have such bad hair!

Can the nioxin shampoo & conditioner be purchased at most retail stores?

Has the doc checked your thyroid? Dry hair, skin, sensitivity to cold, tiredness and constipation are symptoms of hypothyroidism.
-
Very interesting - my sister has some sort of thyroid issue, forgot whether it's hypo or hyper. I'll have to mention this to my GP when I see him next month.
-
Okay saw this really cute haircut - since I usually look great with short hair I might just do this one.
-
How do you post a picture?
-
Yes, I have had my thyroid checked and yes, it is off, but I have been on synthroid for 2 years now and my numbers are very stable.
-
Well as you ladies can tell I got fed up with the hair and cut it short. Luckily I look better in short hair anyway. We've had a very warm winter here in SW Florida so I'm not missing the length.

I hate that everyone is having this problem but glad to know I'm not alone. I've always had thin hair but since my bmx 12/8/11, it's gotten so much worse. It's getting harder and harder to hide it. No chemo, rads or HT. My doc said that the stress and trauma of surgery can cause it to thin. Oh boy. Can't wait for my exchange surgery in a few weeks. I'll have nothing left.
I've been using Nioxin for a couple of years and my hair stylist swore that my hair was fuller and thicker. Stopped using at the time of my surgery and I'm back to using it. Also trying Biotin. Even Walmart sells Nioxin products in the salon at my local store. There is a variety of products. I like the thickening spray real well. They do carry conditioner also.

Hi Denise, i can't find a thread on preventative masec of other breast? in your bio, you mentioned you had both removed. Please direct me to the thread, if there is one. I would like to know how you feel about it. And, anyone else. I'm looking at that decision coming up soon.
And, yes my hair has never been the same, so, I can appreciate your concerns. I have a dear friend who was treated with cancer drugs for another disease (there are too many out there) and bless her heart, she lost two big patches of hair. I sure hope they grow back, but, they look really slick and there doesn't seem to be new 'baby hair' growth coming in. So, it's not just us with cancer, the meds do a real number on us.
Thank you, if you or anyone can direct me to the right place. Hope
