    JFV I lost alot of weight during active treatment and actually made it to my goal weight.  Now it is creeping back on. I have put on about 8 to 10 lbs in about a year.  I am back to all my old bad habits.  I am recently motivated to try and make realistic exercise and eating goals for a couple of major reasons.  One:  I have finally realized the craziness of my life will never stop so I can't keep saying "When X problem is over I'll eat better and exercise more."  These days I just bounce from crisis to crisis so I have to eat well and exercise no matter what else is happening in my life.  Also I have made it to menopause which means the pounds could really start piling on and I will be changing over to arimedex and the possibiltiy of aching joints worries me.  From what I have read exercise is the only thing that really helps the joint issues.  

    So, I have done a couple of things.  I have ordered a cheap pedometer to keep track of my steps.  I have joined a website called "america on the move" that talks about making small changes slowly.  My goal this week is to walk an hour everyday.  Unfortunately during the work week that hour may have to be at 5:30 am.  But, I will try.

    thanks Kathy !  I have already decided I can't walk an hour everyday.  My heel pain has started again.  So, I will try alternating an hour of walking with a stretch and sculpt day.

    Welcome JFV!



    I have done the exact same thing.... Saying to myself.. I can't possibly exercise right now, Not with all I have going on but, as soon as (insert whatever crisis I had going on here) is over with, THEN I will for sure. Problem is, it's never over. As Gilda Radner used to say as Rosanne Rosanadana... "It's ALWAYS Sumpthin"......lol!



    This time around, I decided I would exercise at least 6 days a week and will do it in the AM before life has a chance to interfere as the day goes on. I have just started week 6 of sticking to that promise!!



    As for pedometers, be careful on the super cheap ones. My first one I bought (last year when I thought year, for sure...lol) was super cheap and, unfortunately super inaccurate. It would log steps when I just moved a bit in my chair or, if I road in the car.... YIKES, I could easily rack up 20,000 steps!



    This one is the one I have now... http://www.amazon.com/Omron-HJ-112-Digital-Pocket-Pedometer/dp/B0000U1OCI and I really love it! It is extremely accurate and comes with a clip if you need it or you can remove the clip and just slide it in your pocket! Even stores your results for 7 days!

    Dear Seaside, I really like your idea of exercising in the am, before the the rest of the day interferes, and I used to have a pedometer, can't find it now. I need to buy a new one, thanks!!!!     Hey Tori - welcome!  A 5k in June, huh?  You go girl!  You can do it!

    JFV - Okay, you and I sound a bit alike ... I fall out of my "good" habits when life throws another curve ball.  I have to stop doing that!  I'll try to remind you to stick with it if you'll do the same for me. Oh, I'm also having a problem with a lot of heal pain.  I bought some inserts for my shoes this weekend and I'll let you know if they help.

    Seaside - Love, love, LOVE the Rosanna RosannaDanna reference! So true, it often seems if it's not one thing it's another. Gilda Radner was one of my heroes!  If you guys haven't read "It's Always Something" go get it NOW!  That's an order!! *wink*  

    Kinder - good job on starting your day off with those exercises. Also a public thank you for trying to lift my spirits!  You're a sweet woman!

    Okay ... Here's my commitment for this week.  No snacking after 7:30 PM unless it's low calorie & back to my commitment to walk at least 30 minutes 4 times a week.

    I'll check back in this afternoon!

    P.S. If I missed saying hello to someone new, I'm sorry.  Like I said, I suck at keeping up but I try.

    Good afternoon, everyone sounds good & keeping motivated. I woke up with bad vertigo this am so looks like I won't be doing the treadmill. On the other side maybe I'll loose weight from the N/V.... Just looking on the bright side. Hopefully I'll feel be better I can go to work & resume the treadmill tomorrow. It is helping having you ladies :-)

    Hurray, PlantLover, so glad to see you posting!!!! If you ask my hubby and sons, I am not that sweet!!! But you sure lifted me up today. TENAJ, be careful with your vertigo and I hope you get back to your normal routine quickly. Hey, girls, here is a new exercise routine for you:"Scrub and Sculpt""" Did it this morning, as I was vacuuming my small condo, I did squats and knee lifts. I am just trying to incorporate some exercise in my daily activites, plus walking and bike riding. Now, I just have to adjust eating patterns. But as always, you all keep me so motivated!!!!!Thanks, Kathy

    Seaside and Plant lover thanks for the boost !  I will go out for a walk in 8 minutes.  Plant I looked online there are many exercises for heal pain. I am trying those out.  I am also OK with allowing myself to walk every other day rather than everyday.  I am hoping to walk Mon, Wed, Fri and do some weight work out tues and thurs.  Here's hopint.

    Tenaj feel better !  I also live on Long Island.

    Seaside thanks for sharing the great article on water. I always say I'm going to drink more & for some reason I don't. I WILL drink more water!!! Thanks

    My vertigo left around noon, I hope it doesn't come back tomorrow. My last episode with this several months back seemed to happen in the mornings only for about 4 days. Really knocked me out. I want to get back on the treadmill again!

    Good morning, Ladies!!! Thanks Seaside for the article on water. I just drank 3 glasses and will continue throughout the day. Tenaj, so glad your vertigo is subsiding, be careful on the treadmill, but good for you that you are doing it. I snacked a little too much last night, so a longer walk today, I hope.     Happy Valentines Day all = I told my BF he brings one drop of candy in the house he is in :big trouble;

    tenaj- I'm in Bayville, North Shore, eastern Nassau County.  Pigged out all day but I did walk 20 minutes or so today.

    Hi everyone and Happy Valentines day!

    Been trying to catch up on all the posts.  Sounds like everyone is hanging in there.  Hello to JFV and anyone else that may be new. Plantlover, sounds like you are celebrating Valentines day!   Sorry to hear that you and JFV are having heel pain.  My sister has been having that kind of pain also, they figured out that hers was plantar fasciitis (sp?)   Is yours at the back of your heel or on the bottom of your foot worse near the heel.  Thats where hers was and it seems worse in the morning---she was told that was because of how we straighten our feet out under the covers at night.   She was told not to walk or run for exercise but using a stationary bike was okay..  It sounds very uncomfortable.  I hope that yours will feel better soon.

    I had a good visit with sisters and Dad over the weekend.  Didnt really get my walks in---too much going on, and Sat was such a cold day with a really sharp wind, I think the only exercise you might count for me that day was running from the parking lot into a Sam's Club store.  Tried my best to eat well and for the most part I was pretty good.   Had a few rice krispie treats one evening while playing cards---just couldnt resist. 

    Yesterday, I went with my daughter to look at a college so though I didnt get back to the track, we did a lot of walking.  Was good in a restaurant for lunch---had a pita wrap sandwich and instead of chips chose a side salad.  Was proud of myself cause I do love my chips!   That is a problem food for me, if I could just eat a few, but I can mindlessly eat so many.  Am finding that its best just to avoid them for now.  

    Today I finally got myself back to the track.  I needed that walk!

    Hi, everyone!!!!! I hope you had a great Valentine's. Went to lunch with some old friends from Pittsburgh at an organic restaurant in West Hollywood, so I think we ate healthy, he,he!!!! The food was delicious and we loved being with old friends. When we got home we were starving, and ate too much. Tomorrow is back to walking and eating better!!!!

    Finally I have more than just a second or two to ask my gardening questions!



    First some background.



    Two years ago we put in a 4x16 raised bed. We removed the sod and tilled, which I have now read wasn't a good thing. We added peat moss, vermiculite and a variety of store bought composts (following the formula for Mel's Mix ala the Square Foot Garden method). That seemed to work pretty well but it is sooooo expensive to buy all of that stuff.



    We added some more depth to the soil last year but I think I would like to try the lasagna method at

    the end of this summer to really build up much deeper soil level at a reasonable cost for next year....



    Now for my questions...



    I see where they say to start with a thick layer of newspaper or cardboard. Is that only to kill off the sod or would I still do that?



    From what I have read so far they are also using hay... Do they really mean hay or straw? I would think with hay you would get lots of weeds...



    Most people seem to also be using horse manure... I don't have access to any. I guess I could buy a few bags but, am wondering if it's necessary. Can you just use various layers of grass clippings, leaves (of which I have plenty)?



    I'm sure I will have many more questions but, that's it for now.... I'm dreaming of spring and planning out what to plant!

    Hi everyone!!! Speaking of plants, I found one of my primrose plants has buds on it!!!! They are so confused with this weather.

    I hope everyone is feeling well. Kindergarten sounds like you had a nice lunch with your friends. Jaytee, glad to hear you had a nice weekend with your family. JFV, sounds like you have been taking advantage of the warmer weather we have been having. keep walking!!!

    Plantlover, sounds like you enjoyed yourself. We all need to have some fun. Today is another day.

    My vertigo is almost gone. I didn't do the treadmill again, maybe tomorrow. Drinking more water & eating healthy though. Saw my onc today, so far so good. Got my lupron injection & had b/w done, I hope that comes out well. Tomorrow I see my PS for a 4 week check up & my DH gets his cast off. Looking forward to checking those appointments off the list. Stay motivated!!!

So healthy, but then I ruined by eating badly at home that night, he,he,he!!!! Back to normal today!!!!     This HAS been such a crazy winter especially in the NE... I'm not a snow lover do it's been A-OK by me...lol



    Glad to hear that you are feeling better! That vertigo can be absolutely disabling.... Hope your bloodwork comes back great and that both yours and your husband's appointments go well tomorrow!

    My daughter just graduated from college last year but, I remember how exciting it was going to visit the different colleges and how I kept wondering where the time had gone!

    Hope your first day back at work was a good one! My DH did bring home candy but, because he knows how hard I'm trying, he bought just one small dark chocolate candy bar which is my fave!! And since it's dark chocolate it IS good for my heart, right?!.... lol

    Hi All !  Thanks for the advice and sympathy re: heel pain.  It is worse in the morning.  I hate the idea of giving up walking.  But, I do have a stationery bike in the basement.  Maybe I'll dust it off.  Meanwhile I am trying to stretch the heel alot and wiggle my feet around before I get out of bed in the morning.  Terrible eating yesterday.  A little better today but no exercise.  Had a confrontation with a coworker.  I'm gonna treat myself to a warm bath as a way to calm down.

    Well, I'm still not making the time for exercise like I should this week.  I won't make a bunch of excuses but I could, lol.

    Thanks for the info on the heel pain.  I'm beginning to think I might need to get a doc to check it out.

    Yes, the layers of newspaper or cardboard are just necessary if you're trying to kill sod or weeds.  It would not be needed for the raised bed you have.

    Personally, I wouldn't use hay or straw.  You can use grass clippings just make sure you mix in brown material, such as old leaves.  I think the ratio is usually 2 parts brown to 1 part green.

    As far as the manure, I recommend you just buy some bags of black kow, which should be available at your local Lowe's or other home improvement store.  Yes, I think it is very necessary and wouldn't skip that step.  I'd think you could probably get away with about 4 to 6 bags for a bed that's 4 by 16.

    Another really good bagged product I'd recommend would be soil conditioner.  I'd probably throw in about 2 to 3 bags of it.  It's also available at Lowe's.  Honestly, I don't plant anything without amending the soil with both black kow & soil conditioner.

    Here's a pic of a bed I made. Too funny, you can even see the newspaper on the edge close to the creek because I ran out of mulch.

    Now, here's the deal.  I don't amend the soil in the entire bed.  Instead, here's my process:

    1.  Spray the entire area with Round Up.

    2.  Wait about 3 to 5 days for grass to turn yellow.

    3.  Lay down a heavy layer of newspaper &, if available, cardboard in the areas you don't plan to plant.  Water it all down.

    4.  Cover with mulch & if you can, wait a few weeks to plant.

    5.  Dig the holes for plants and amend the native soil with Black Kow & Soil conditioner ... ratio is about half native soil to half bagged amendments.

    The stationary bike can be just as good for cardio as the treadmill and will be far more gentle on your feet! Sucks about the arguement with the co-worker... A nice hot bath sounds wonderful! Hope you enjoy yours!

    Seaside where are you on the NE?

    I have an appointment for a follow up with the PS today & DH will hopefully get his cast off. Vertigo is not completely gone so I will stay off the treadmill one more day. Drinking more water & eating fairly well, I did have some pretzels last night while watching tv. :-(.

    Thinking of you all & hoping you are all feeling well & taking time for yourselves!!!
