Sore throat because of rad treatments?

Options

Hi everyone,

I'm 15 treatments into my 25 read treatments and I've started getting a really sore throat. It started out feeling sore like it did after my taxotere treatments but then, as of yesterday it's very sore in one area, quite low down (like where my neck meets my breast bone) it feels like I swollowed a nail! I can't eat anything that isn't soft  or even swallow without it hurting.

Could this be from the rad? My chest is quite pink at the top, not far from where my throat is sore. I see my radiation oncologist on Wed but until then I'm nervously waiting.

Anyone get a sore throat from radiation?

Yes, JRose, I did too. RO said it happens. You can also get a sensation of having a lump in your throat. Don't forget, rads causes inflammation! Good luck and let us know what your RO says.

Did they explain to you where the radiation would be delivered?  Did you tell them about this?

Since your throat is affected, I would like to tell you that, months after radiation, my gums receeded...no one told me that would happen.  I now use prescription flouride and a super super post-operation tooth brush.  Once they receed, there is no fixing it...talk to your dentist about this.

    Hi JRose,

According to the main Breastcancer.org site, a sore throat is in fact a side effect of radiation therapy, and also offers tips on managing your sore throat.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks everyone, that is reassuring. I'll still talk to my RO on Wednesday but at least now I'm calmer and not ready to run off to the ER.

thefuzzylemon - my gums receeded during my tax treatments but they went back (for the most part, anyway)
