btw.. just saw organic coconut oil at Trader Joe's  5.99 a pound.  pretty good price.  I really like it and sometimes rub just a bit into my hair.. talk about gloss and shine.  just a bit so it doesn't look oily.

I use the stuff for just about everything. My daughter recently told me that she is using it as deodorant!  It works because of its antibacterial qualities.  I'm giving that a try... so far I haven't reapplied it in 24 hours and I am still fine!  Pretty amazing because I normally have to use a really good deodorant.

lulubee:  Funny you should say that!  I read somewhere that you could use it as a dedorant...I've tried everything natural and they don't work, so today I tried the coconut oil...IT WORKED! No funky smell.

If it works in the Florida heat and humidity, it will work anywhere!

I'm with bexybexy.  Veganism can be an extremely healthy lifestyle.  I remain unconvinced that meat and dairy are either healthy or necessary.  Dairy particularly in the ER+ cancer camp.  I do believe fish is the healthiest of the meats, but it's so contaminated I gave up trying to find healthy alternatives.

I don't see how vegans are any worse off than meat eaters, unless the meat eaters vigilantly never eat anything inorganic.  And that means eating out is pretty much off limits.

It's so true and as a vegan I have faced nothing but prejudice which really saddens me. I have long hair that is almost past my backside, long nails and healthy skin hardly the image of a typical malnourished vegan. I believe that some vegans can go too far and am not into the whole raw food movement, mainly because I love vegan cupcakes lol! However I do try to include a lot of raw food in my diet, and have the most varied diet of anyone I know!

I sell organic shea butter moisturizers and it is great on scars. I use it on my dry skin or sunburned skin too. If you buy it someplace, just make sure it is not processed using hexane.

Wow, I am going to run downstairs and get my jar of extra virgin coconut oil out again!  My mom first turned me on to it after my MX, but I didn't love what it did to the skin of my hands.  It made the skin  seem very thin and wrinkly :-\  Buttttt, after reading all of these posts, I'm willing to give it a chance on my MX scars and also when I start rads a month from now.

Does anyone know anything about Emu Oil?  I've also heard good things about that.  For the record, I used straight Aloe (from a live plant) on my MX scars post surgery and it worked wonders.  I love all these ideas ladies....keep them coming!!

Been using extra virgin unrefined coconut oil on skin and in food for years --- I'm looking forward to trying it as a deodorant now!  One of my favorite uses is with popcorn, in place of butter. You can even sprinkle some curry on popcorn along with salt and pepper, and its a great mixture. I often melt it on veggies in place of butter too.

Just a quick update...I'm starting week 4 of rads and am barely red.  No dryness, no flaking. Coconut oil twice a day...right after treatment and when I go to bed. Bought a bunch of cheap white cotton tshirts and cut squares of the fabric to put between my bra and my skin so the oil doesn't get on everything. My skin still feels so soft you can't even tell I'm having treatment.  We'll see how things go over the next few weeks.

I've been using raw !00% food-grade cocoa butter (cacao).  It's amazing!  I really didn't like the cocoa butter stick I got at the drugstore. so stinky!  but the food-grade pure stuff has a lighter scent and it's like magic for scars. I can't believe how fast it works.  It has so much good stuff in it naturally.  It's good for you too, if you choose to use it in recipes.  Sort of a superfood.

I discovered coconut oil thanks to this forum, and frankly it's my favorite now, for almost everything! Cooking (especially in Southern Indian foods), makeup remover (the best!), hairtreatment once a week (I rub it in and sleep with it), and for my breasts (and thus scar), and actually my whole body! While I was on chemo and had rads I used it in my face too, but now when my skin is 'back to normal' it's a tiny bit too oily. My scars were already nice, and I believe the coconut oil has really helped to minimize burns from rads and the black spots I got in the end. It's been 6 months since surgery, and frankly the scar is AOK :-D I def recommend it for massaging breasts to avoid fibrosis.

Thanks for the tip for Coconut oil for deoderant -- I am going to give it a try tomorrow -- if it works that would be wonderful.  I am using it now as moisturizer on my incision - haven't used it long enough to know if it is helpful.

I started using coconut oil after I finished radiation. I didn't think the creams the doctor gave me did much and didn't like using petroleum produces on my skin, although that worked. I noticed a great response with my skin and radiation burns. My friend that is a year ahead of me said my skin is less red only a month out than hers is now after a year. I started noticing not only is it great for my skin but the scars on that side are fading. The difference in the scars on the side I have been using the coconut oil on and the side not is remarkable. Although I know that they will reopen my scars for my final reconstruction I have started use coconut oil on all my scars including my port scar.

After reading this thread, I'm ready to give coconut oil a try for skin.  I've used it for cooking, but I see here that it has a lot of uses!
