Having another meltdown
URG... I felt like I was doing so good mentally until last night. I woke up and started thinking about my last onc appt in Jan. Was told my reoccurence rate over 10 years is 52%, but that did not take into account that I had radiation. My onc says not to worry that is a stat over the "last" 10 years with ppl with my exact dx. ({{{{YELL}}}}) ({{{CUSS WORDS}}}}) I rely on this site heavily because there are so many women who are surviving this. I just need to breathe and cheer up.
I am joining a gym and exercising better!! But I feel like no matter what I do, vitamins, stop smoking, stop drinking, exercise it's all for nothing because this crap is going to come back anyway!! URG.....
Thanks for listening...(well thanks for reading)

don't listen to those statistics. how can cancer grow when we exercize like crazy. I'm almost done with chemo and I walk 2.4 miles a day. plan on a 5 k when chemo done. then a half marathon in fall.
I have this little voice in my head " she says I can do it"
of course here it is 10am still not dress.still not done with my quota of water. I'm going to get out there today, even though I had chemo yest. I am determined.
tell that other voice to shut the F up. you are not a statistic
-
you are right, I am trying. Good for you for workign out thru chemo. I managed to continue with housework but no exercising. You really think that exercing and working out will help? I am committed to joining a gym, in fact I checked one out yesterday and was given a free pass and am going today after work. Sometimes I just feel hopeless but I am sure this is normal and I will get over it soon. Thanks so much!!
-
do you have the big bible? Dr Susan loves breast book? on page 199 it talks about exercize and prevention. they list all kinds of studies, I reread it and it doesn't go much into specifices for recurrence.
-
I found something onhere. butmy computer won'tlet me cut and paste.
-
go to www.livestrong.com and search for exercize and breast cancer recurrense. according to that your stats go down 50% with exercize. how do like those numbers
-
{{Cheryl}} I'm right there with you - melting down! But I'm way behind you. Where are you at exactly in terms of treatment? When did you finish rads? I'm just starting Taxol. I think it's so weird how many different chemo regimens there are - how we all get something different, even if we have similar dx. I can't stop the meltdowns myself. So much fear of recurrence.
That said, I really do believe it's true that exercise reduces recurrence. I think that's pretty well established. I'm not sure you even need to join a gym per se. I think running/race walking for 45 min to a hour a day is good. And you can lift small weights at home. I'm too sick to do the stairs now but before I got sick from chemo I tried to go up and down the stairs in my house a certain number of times a day, picking up the pace each day. If you do join the gym, the elliptical is a good piece of equipment.
I also choose to believe in the aspirin thing. I'm not allowed to have aspirin on Taxol but after Taxol I'll go back on baby aspirin four times a week. I would also like to do the metformin trial. (Well, actually I'd like to just go on metformin but my onc says no; haven't asked primary care doc yet.) And I'm giving up sugar, white flour, and other foods that are inflammatory.
I know you were on cancermath.net and got spooked. Are you sure you did it right? You want to be sure to use the one that allows you to put in your treatment. That's the one that says "Therapy Calculator." And remember, grade 3 cancer is the cancer that chemo actually works on. Grade 3 patients have a more aggressive cancer, yes, but they also are the ones who often have total pathological response to chemo. I'm enduring chemo as a grade 1 -- knowing it probably doesn't even work on my cancer because the chemo kills fast growing cells not slow growing ones like mine.
Anyway I just wanted you to know you're not freaking out alone. My brother told me statistics break down in populations under 100 so don't pay attention to statistics. {{Hugs}}

I was just looking at a study on the neuvax-that cancer vaccine. they have entered human trials. thats when I was relooking up my her2 status. I think its for her2+, but theres a number to call.
whats the aspirin thing do?
is there a trial for the metformin thing?
-
thanks fredntan.. I will check that site out....
I take 81 mg of aspirin 5 x a week, there are studies that show a reduction in reoccurence. Cancer is an inflammatory and aspirin and anti inflammatory. Hey I will try anything!!
-
thanks Posy... I completed chemo on Sept 8 ( my wedding anniversary) and 35 rad treatments were done on Nov 17. Now entering 3rd month of Tamoxofin. Not too bad so far. Some joint pain I guess, perhaps weight gain but not sure as I drifted off of my diet for a week or two. Back to working out though. I do have a treadmill at home but it gets boring, so a gym will work best for me. Plus it is right near my work.
As far as cancermath, i don't think i did it right, i did not know what generation my treatment was and plus that probably does not take hr pr her2 results into account. I am just going to keep my chin up and enjoy my life, i think that having a positive attitude is also better for your body. Guess I need to go back to "Don't worry until you have to".
I am trying to eat a lot of veggies and raw food but still eat some chicken and will have a steak now and again. I like pasta but don't eat it often. I eat lots of fuit and eat flaxseed on my antioxidant cereal and yogurt. Sigh.....I wish we were all in a big nightmare together and soon we will wake up.
-
Just went to that site fred, I am convinced and am joining gym!! Thanks so much!!
-
I sent email. she said she would call me later. and it looks like I will maybe be eligible on what I told her. Okay going to get dressed and do my big walk. I swear!!!!!!!!!!
-
Here's one link to the recent aspirin story. But google aspirin and breast cancer recurrence and you'll see lots more.
There is an ongoing double blind trial to see if metformin (diabetes drug) reduces recurrence of BC but lots of women are just getting their PCPs to prescribe it instead of participating in the trial.
-
thanks for info, have a nice walk!!
-
Stay off cancer math, don't let Dr. Google pay house calls. Those stats are outdated! They lump everyone together and don't account for diet, exercise, taking your meds as directed. There are so many variables.
Exercise is great during chemo, and especially good after active treatment is completed. That is time when many women feel vunerable. I was lucky enough to get my rads in Monterey, CA and everyday I would ask my rad techs where I should hike next.
You also need to think, if it comes back (I still think your chances are excellent for a long life) you have made your body strong to withstand further treatment. You've improved your quality of life right now, and that means alot!

ckgrayoh,
Is that a picture of an Arabian horse in your profile? It is just beautiful!! I used to ride horses back in the day and I always thought Arabs had the smoothest gaits. It was like riding on a cloud!
Cyndi
-
Yes that is an Arab. I love them!! Waiting til surgeries are done then getting a horse again.
I never google anything because if I did I would never stop crying. Agreed the info is outdated and very general. I am getting ready to hit the gym in about an hour, taking some off work today as I am anxious to get started!!
Thanks for the encouraging words. Sometimes I feel like I should not be here whining but this is a great place to vent and get some support!! Love it!!
-
theres a horse rescue place down the road a piece. when I'm all done. they are going to teach me how to train the baby horses-they get most of theres from whatever that thing is that they breed the horses for premarin or whatever. I don't think I want to ride. I just like to brush them and the way they smell
-
I love the smell of horses! YUP!! Sounds like a nice place, good therapy. To me any animal is good therapy though. I have never trained a horse, my sister has a 1.5 year old and a 3 year old and she is working with both of them. Can't wait to see the 1.5 year old when he goes to get saddled, he is a little sh*t. But very cute!! I have 6 cats and love them all to death!! Thinking about a dog but not sure how cats would react. I bought a pool so I plan on doing a lot of laying around in my pool this summer since last summer sucked!!
