fed up again

Options

Hi there

This is my second rant of the day doing well aren't I lol?!

Over the years I have donated hundreds of pounds to Breast cancer charities in fact any charities. I am what I call the queen of second hand shops and about 90% of my wardrobe is second hand. I often buy clothes from second hand shops and wear them a few times then re-donate them. I have always contributed to charities and even before DX would buy breast cancer ribbons, sponsor any friends doing any marathons etc for charity. I recently sent my story off to a magazine in the UK where I live. It is a magazine called Full House and is entirely comprised of reader's true stories. It will be published in March which I am delighted about. It's not cos I want to be published, I am hoping younger women (a large section of their readership) who may not think about breast cancer ( I am 35 and I never did) will read my story and be encouraged to check their breast.

Anyway the long and short of it is, the magazine are paying me £100 for having the story published, anyone who gets printed in the magazine gets the same, though they can pay up to £500 depending on the length of the story. Everyone has been saying to me the same thing "I expect you will want to donate that to breast cancer research charity" Well I feel terrible (please don't all shoot me down lol) saying this but actually I want to spend it on myself! I feel like I have been through hell and back and actually wouldn't mind buying some nice feminine nightwear or maybe splurge on some face cream to pamper myself. Is this wrong? I am already planning to throw a charity disco this summer in aid of breast cancer, and have karaoke, food etc all of which I will fund myself, and have lots of raffles and things going on to raise money. I just feel like I shouldn't have to be told what to do with the money. There are all sorts of stories in this magazine, some are like the type of thing you would see on Jerry Springer, I have read of married women with kids having affairs with toyboys. They still get paid to print their story no one says to them they should use that money to spend on their families who they have heard. I guess it just made me angry when people tell me what to do, I wish I could add up the cost to me of trips to the hospital, parking fees there, dressings, skin itching cream for my wounds, special underwear etc I am so fed up!!!

Bexy, you are the research.....it is through you and your statistics that other people can benefit so treat yourself and enjoy it and don't feel guilty about anything.  If someone comments and it's not a positive, just tell them that you have given far more that any of them............you have given your breast.

bexybexy, you are totally reasonable to spend that money on yourself. Don't worry what your family and friends say. Trust your own judgement and be assured you are sane.

Enjoy spending the money. You sound like a very giving person.

And let us know what you buy.

Thankyou to you both I feel better already!! The part that you said chrissyb saying I have given my breast I never even thought about it like that and it makes total sense!!! I think I also get fed up when people do all this pink stuff for raising money I dont mean to knock them as anyone who does anything to raise money is doing great, but I think until you have been through this experience you don't know what it means. I used to watch things like the Race for Life before all this and think how fun it looked running alongside your friends wearing pink boa's etc but I don't think if I had done it then I would of truly understood it. I am thinking of getting a really expensive face cream something I would never do normally. My skin is so bad at present where I have been crying all the time, and I feel prematurely aged! Anyone have any suggestions of good creams? I keep hearing about Creme de la Mer but think I would have to have an article published in Time magazine before I can afford that!!

Bexy, I can't help with any suggestions as I don't use expensive cremes because I can't afford them.  I use one called Natio and it works very well for me.  Good luck with your purchases!

bexybexy, you are only 35 so you don't need heavy duty cream. What about Clinique? I was watching Dr Oz today and he had a Clinique product on so they should be ok.

Go and talk to the consultants for the different brands at your department store.

It makes me sad to think of you crying so much.

Hey Chrissy, I use some Natio too.

Bexy, you mightn't have that one as it's Australian.

Maybe you could treat yourself to a facial too!

Uh, yea, you don't owe anyone any explanation on how you spend the money.  It's no one's buisness if you blow it all on the roll of the dice, or if you sock it away for a rainy day.  Do NOT feel one millisecond of guilt for spending it on yourself.

I think they had a lot of nerve even asking you what you intend to do with YOUR money! Treat yourself, you deserve it!

What nerve some people have - it's YOUR money and I think a splurge on face cream and/or a facial is a grand idea or fabulous underwear - whatever - it's YOURS, you earned it and it's your business - enjoy!

I want to curse here.....fudge them! You do what you want with the money. If it was a HUGE amount, that may be a different story. You have given, you are giving, and you will give. Just not this.

Hahahahah thankyou all lovely ladies!!!! I may look into the Natio or the Clinique! I did see a small pot of Creme De La Mer on Ebay and it was quite affordable so I might get it and of course with expensive creams I find a little goes a long way! Or I might just spend it on a night out I have coming up in March a nice glass of wine and a new outfit maybe! It is unbelievable the nerve of some people and you're right these people don't know what it is like and have probably never donated to any charity in their lives!! xxxx

Spend it on yourself, please do not give it a second thought, let alone a guilty one !!

I feel the same, always happy to help even before diagnosis, but since my diagnosis I can understand and appreciate more fully, the need for a bit of pamper and me time.

Spend and let us know how how you spent it.. GOOD FOR YOU !!

"I expect you will want to spend that money on breast cancer charities."

"Actually, I was thinking of spending it on a vibrator."

That'll shut them up, lol.  :)

La Mer is very nice face cream but I would be very wary buying it on ebay.  Lots of fakes there.  I would just splurge on it and pay the difference myself in a real store.  You deserve it!
