non-profits that fund BC research, not awareness
This whole Komen debacle reminded me that I want to donate to an organization that supports cancer research, not just "awareness." Has anyone taken the time to research this and is willing to make a recommendation?
Breast Cancer Fund. Their focus is on environmental causes of cancer. They have done some studies on their own, such as determining that amount of BPA families get from eating canned foods. Based on my limited reading, it seems like they are a "research and advocacy" group. i.e. trying to get bills passed to reduce toxins. Maybe a good choice. Anyone know more about them?

Breast Cancer Research Foundation (The pie chart on their home page shows that 90% of funds go into "research and awareness." With their name I would have expected the majority to go to research, so this lumping of funds makes me wonder .....)
California Breast Cancer Research Program
Anyone have an opinion on these orgs (good or bad)? Are there others orgs I'm missing?
thanks for your help!

Dr. Susan Love's Army Of Women... http://www.armyofwomen.org/ Dr. Love speaks eloquently about needing to understand the cause before we can find a cure.
Breast Cancer Action... http://bcaction.org/ Focuses on environmental factors
StandUp2Cancer... http://standup2cancer.org/ Not limited to breast cancer, but has put together "Dream Teams" of leading researchers from various backgrounds that have already made some important discoveries
Thanks for starting this thread, Peggy. Deanna

Thanks a lot, Deanna. My mom has been on the Army of Women email list for ages (long before my Dx). After this Komen issue, she was considering donating to them instead, so nice to know it's a good organization. Thanks for the other suggestions, too!

NBCC is one of my favorites. National Breast Cancer Coalition. They are our lobbyists and our advocacy trainers. I've always wanted to take their Project Lead class.

The charity navigator website is pretty amazing.

Thanks Anne. I remember that org but forgot the name! Yes to advocacy. I'm thrilled the the state of CA has banned BPA in kids' stuff. It's not a complete ban on BPA (yet) but a start.

Thank you for this information, I really appreciate this!

Many of the large and university-affiliated hospitals also conduct or fund research, and every one of them is happy to receive donations. Some also offer employer matching, which can make your donor dollars go further.

I believe you can also donate directly to the National Cancer Institute, and designate your gift to breast cancer research. The NCI funds well-designed, promising, peer-reviewed research projects throughout the U.S.
