Recurring pain in shin

Options

I've had this pain before. It's in my rt. lower leg (towards the inside) -- shin?? I walk a lot and am on my treadmill. It particularly hurts when I wear certain boots.  About six months ago I had it x-rayed and it showed nothing.  Could it just be shin splints? I hate this f-ing disease.

It sounds like shin splints. I just had an MRI on my ankle because I have had pain in it for months. Thouh everyone says its really rare to get cancer below the knee, it still makes us nervous. But it does sound like shin splints. Julie

Thanks, Sanbar. I'm scared to death.  My x-ray for the same thing was last March.

I agree, most probably shin splints...start with stretching calf, ice x 15 minutes after walking and rest from walks if necessary...swim or try stationary bike instead. This is your friendly neighborhood physical therapist talking....take care.

Oh and stretch shin too! Standing facing wall...instead of calf stretch position, tuck foot under or do in sitting by pulling down on foot/ toes!

Rachel, did you have chemo?  I developed the kind of pain you're describing towards the end of chemo, and it lasted for several weeks after chemo ended.  It was just in my right shin, and worse at night.  It was so bad, I had an MRI to see if anything ominous was going on, which it wasn't.  Eventually, it stopped, but I occasionally have just a slight twinge of it.  I think it was from chemo damage (TC) or possibly bone marrow damage from Neulasta, although I've never figured it out for sure.  Anyway, just wanted to mention this as a possibility, if you also had chemo.   Deanna

Deanna -- I had DD chemo AC and taxotere. I know I've been prone to shin splints in this leg, but it's definately been worse since my dx.

3 boysmom39-- Thank you for your PT perspective. I will do the stretch (never thought of that) and ice.  I'm a bit of a toe walker and I tend to put all my weight on my rt. side.

Marial -- good to know that they sound like what you get. Ugh. Does this get easier??

You all have been a huge help. My chiropractor says my hip and knee are wango on the rt. and that could cause the pain. He's been working on that, but heck, you know where my mind goes. I'll keep you posted. Thank you ladies!!!!!!! Rachel

I have heard this is an unlikely area to present with mets.  I hope so, because I have this pain as well.  It hurts when my younger son hugs my shin hard. I hope it is nothing for you! And you're right, this disease sucks!

and remember, you said it yourself....you've had this pain before.  You had an X-ray and it showed nothing....

I had this kind of pain with chemo, and now I have been off chemo for 4 months, if I walk a bit faster or longer, I get that shin-splint pain too.

I also had this pain after chemo, was in both legs but now only the right. Worse at night, but it is getting better and less frequent. Hang in there...it will get better!!

When I was walking on asphalt or concrete I was getting this all the time.  I switched to exercising on an eliptical and now have no more pain.

ckgrayoh, one thing that helped me some at night was putting a pillow under that leg.  If you're not already doing that, you may want to try it.   Deanna
