High Aspartame use and BC
Just wondering if any of you consumed high quantities of artificial sweeteners over the past 20 years or so? I was basically addicted to diet sodas. I had days when I drank a LOT of soda (usually 4 cans per day) and sometimes consuming up to 12 cans a day (gross, I know).
I've now come to learn that aspartame turns into fermalydhyde in the body, and that there is research linking it to breast cancer.
I'm really curious to know if anyone of you is like me in that you drank it on a regular basis over the past 10 to 20 years, I'd love to hear from you.
BTW, I'm 48 years old.
Thanks!

Lucky- My oncologist's staff dietician is convinced that artificial sweeteners contribute to BC. Of course, she has no actual proof, but she told me she would rather I use a small amount of real sugar over artificial! I did not use alot of aspartame or anything else and still got BC- so there has to be other things as well!
-
Hi TifJ-
Really??? Fascinating. Thanks for the response. I agree there are MANY things that contribute, so deep down I know it isn't the mass quantities of sodas I drank for the past 20 years. I post my question out of curiosity, and am wondering why on earth such a chemical would be allowed into our national food stream when it causes such horrible side effects.
BTW: How are you doing 16 months later??

I don't think that Splenda is aspartame? I do use Splenda. I've used it for at least 7 years in my coffee. I eat very little sugar or sweets.. Never soda, diet or otherwise, I think it's evil Lol.
My sister had a malignant brain tumor about 6 years ago. She has world renown oncologist from Mass General. He told us that sugar to cancer is like gasoline to fire...star away from it. He recommended honey or agave.
I stopped sugar at that point in my coffee (they only thing I used sugar for) and switched to Splenda. At the time, I was also trying to lose weight from a pregnancy the year before.
I'll be interested to see the posts here.. -
Hi-Splenda is equally as bad from what I understand, although I'm not sure why, as I wasn't a splenda-aholic they way I was an addicted to aspartame. And when I say addicted, I mean ADDICTED. Honestly, this is what I'm struggling with the most...crazy, huh?
Yes, I've heard that sugar is rotten for us cancer patients, as well. You are lucky you are such a healthy eater. Some days, my diet was just like Buddy's from the movie "ELF": sugar, candy corn, candy canes, and syrup!
Hope you are doing well.
-
I am a pretty healthy eater, never smoked, I exercise regularly, etc...and I still got BC! I think that's what is so maddening... What is it?????? Ugh
-
2 diet pepsis a day, every day. I'm addicted!
-
Never used aspartame.
-
Btw...I'm 43 and probably ingest 10-15 Splenda packets a day. Lots of coffee!
-
Makratz: Fascinating, truly. For how long? May I ask how old you are? Do you still drink it? I can go about 36 hours without one, I swear...I've tried to cut back, but it is so much harder to do than people realize.
Thanks for the responses, ladies. You are all AWESOME!

I used to drink a lot of diet coke years ago (to keep me caffeinated at work) but quit 10+ years ago. Did it contribute to my cancer? Who knows? How long has it been growing? But post-BC, I've made the choice to avoid artificial anything and to eat organic as much as possible (esp. eggs, dairy and meat; I often avoid them, but if I do eat them I make sure they are organic).
BTW, the book the MOOD CURE claims that aspartame mucks with your serotonin levels (your body's natural "feel good" chemical, so mucking with that can lead to low moods, depression etc) so one option is to maybe take a vacation from aspartame and see if you feel better. You can always go back... (my experience is that there was a few-day period of withdrawal, and then I felt better)
I post my question out of curiosity, and am wondering why on earth such a chemical would be allowed into our national food stream when it causes such horrible side effects.
Yeah, good question. What I've seen is that a lot of these possible toxins are considered safe until proven guilty. Remember how Coke used to have cocaine in it?
Also, in some cases the US is more lenient that Europe and other countries, such as the approach to GMOs. Not only is GMO food allowed in the US, we can't even get it labelled so we don't know what we're eating. arg! Europeans don't agree with that. OK, stepping off my soapbox.
Lucky48 I see you've been recently diagnoses. It's so hard at the beginning. I hope things are going well for you. After I was Dx'd I got some cookbooks from the library related to cancer. It felt like a fun little project to learn some healthy and tasty new recipes that were good for me. I like THE CANCER FIGHTING KITCHEN by Rebecca Katz. I'm not much of a chef so some of the recipes felt like a little work, but some were easier, and it was fun (and she talks about foods that have cancer-fighting properties). Good luck!

Holy Cow! Now that's A LOT of Splenda! Okay...so maybe you're more like me than I realized.
How long have you been pouring 10-15 packets of Splenda into your system??? I can't quite remember when Splenda hit the market place... I was too busy guzzling gallons of diet sodas all day long to pay attention. Plus, aspartame messes up your memory, so even if I was paying attention, I don't remember! (Kidding)

I am 45. I've been drinking them since college. I don't drink coffee so I have my diet pepsi in the morning for caffeine! I always blamed my BC on birth controll pills.
-
1-2 cans of diet Dr. Pepper a day minimum since 1983. I stopped October 5, 2010 (my first day of chemo). At the most I have one a month if that. No more soda for me.
It's also bad for your bones too. My bone density showed I was slightly osteopenic just before chemo. Stopped soda, increased calcium (already was exercising and increased D). After chemo and 5 months of Anastrozole my bone density went down only .1% (yes there is a decimal). I quitting diet soda might have helped make a difference.

I switched from sugar to Splenda in my coffee about six years ago. I was trying to lose weight from having a baby the year before.
Interestingly, I had a beautiful Aunt, that was an eighteen year BC survivor, completely NED after undergoing UMX, chemo, rads and was in on the first trial of Tamofixin. Her BC came back with a vengeance after 18 years. Three years before the recurrence (liver) she was diagnosed with diabetes. She was thin and fit, very active, but she had such a hard time staying away from sweets. Much more so than an average person on a diet. She could not resist. Very interesting... -
Several diet cokes a day, for years. I have largely changed my diet since diagnosis (really inspired by the book Anticancer), but have not managed to give up the diet Coke. I know I should, though.
-
Lucky- I am doing well. Feel pretty much back to "normal". Thanks for asking. Now, if I could just lay off the sugar and fat- I would really be good! I am not overweight, but could still stand to lose about 10lbs!
I don't like honey, maybe I should try the agave!
-
I drank 2-3 diet Pepsi's a day for about six months when I was trying to lose weight between my kids. Other than that, I avoided diet drinks because I really don't like the taste of artificial sweeteners. No matter which one is used, I can taste it. They leave an aftertaste for me. So except when I really had to lose weight (I had promised my then-husband that I would), it was never part of my diet.
-
Never had one tiny bit of aspartame....ever.....
Also never had any artificial sugar in my life. I use agave now, but I seriously don't think there is any difference between Agave and any other form of real sugar. But I use it anyway...I also don't think cancer feeds on sugar but it's not good for us to eat soo much of it.
-
Me neither. Never had any aspartame - ever.
-
FYI breast cancer does not feed on sugar. Granted sugar isn't good for you and of couse too much will cause you to put on weight… extra weight isn't good for breast cancer as we know but sugar consumption doesn't feed breast cancer. linky
Granted I'm in the mood for some gummy cherries… but don't have any so I'm good today
-
I too was addicted to diet soda. I had been drinking for 10-15 years- I am convinced there is a link. I wish some university would really do a study on it.
-
I wish it was so easy folks!! I've never had a can of diet soda in my 40+year lifetime (and think in my life I've had less than a dozen cans of regular soda), never drank coffee (never liked the smell), never drank alcohol really at all (not even in college, no beer or wine with dinner, no after dinner drinks, etc), never was on the pill, don't take any pills in fact, not overweight, never smoked, rarely ever eat red meat. AND HERE I AM!
Give yourselves a break, cells divide, cells die, things get out of wack. It's not fair but it is the reality!
-
I also blame birth control pills on my BC EVEN THOUGH THE doctors say there is no connection.
-
Makratz: I worried about ovarian cancer since my Mom died from it. My OBGYN suggested I go on birth control pills for 5 yrs since it reduced the chances of my getting ovarian cancer. I did it. Then bc....I wonder.?????
-
So many doctors recommend them. I don;t get it. You're messing with hormones!!
-
I guess would llike to know what is considered high apartame intake. I usually have one 20 ounce bottle of Diet Coke during the course of a day. I appreciate research has much as the next person, but I do get frustrated reading about all these different things that may have caused my BC (parabens, birth control, vitamin D deficiency, etc.) It's hard not to turn into a total nutcase. My MO says "all things in moderation", so I use that as my guide.
-
I am so grateful for all of your replies. I'll go look for the studies I found that got me all freaked out, so you can look at them...probably tomorrow...the one that got me the most concerned was written by a professor from the Arizona State or Univ. of Arizona; There are countless others, but if you all think hard enough back to those early years when we were all drinking Tab, there was a big uproar about the FDA allowing aspartame into beverages. Remember also, aspartame isn't just in diet sodas, but in many other "sugar free" products. So, maybe someone didn't drink a gallon of Diet Coke a day like I did, but perhaps you chewed alot of "sugar free" gum, or sucked on mints, or ate a bunch of "sugar free"popcicles. Just wondering...
Onto the paraben issue...a very good friend of mine works for the Environmental Council where I live, and has done a lot of hard work just trying to get labels on cosmetics, which is already done in Europe. This is a bigger issue and a whole 'nuther discussion...gotta go...more later, and THANK YOU!! It's been very interesting reading your posts.
-
CTMOM1234 I tend to agree with you but I still want to blame my asshole former boss for flicking the final switch
I have read that birth control is only an issue when you are taking them, or take them for long periods of time and the risk is just slightly higher. Supposedly once you are off them for 10 years the risk goes back to where you were before taking them. I was on them for a few years back in the early 80's. I highly doubt this had an effect on me. source linky
I'm also not a big drinker. It's not unusual for women who are in the luminal b category to have low consumption of alcohol, not use HRT and are younger. source linky
-
I was a diet coke, diet pepsi drinker for years...at least two a day. I quit about 2 years ago and was dx with bc in 2011. Also did birth control for 20 years and HRT for another 20. Small wonder I got bc.
Now I don't do any of that stuff, follow a healthy diet, take supplements, keep a lean body mass and exercise regularly, so hope that helps stops recurrence.
-
I rarely ever drink pop at all and if I do, its just the regular sugary stuff, Coke or Gingerale. I like my red wine and smoke too (yes must quit, I know). Not a sweet freak, eat all my greens, never used Birth Control, no HRT. Not a big milk drinker. No BC history in the family. My personal view is what the animals are being fed that we eat and whats the fruit and veg are being sprayed with. Even my MO says they don't know what causes cancer.
