Let's Inspire each other to be Creative

New ... your "doodles" go way beyond doodles!! Very nice! They remind me of working with pen & ink when I was in high school art classes. Actually made me want to go and look for images of pen & ink work.
-
Nice DOODLES !!!!!! I wonder if we could see a new piece of artwork posted at least ONCE a week, from whoever ?????? It seems to peek a lot of interests when something new is posted. After all this is the thread to do that. Agreed?
-
Awwwww, you ladies are sweet! Thanks for the compliments! It's fun to see so many different types of creativity here! I'd love to see new stuff posted - I'll show you mine if you show me yours, hehehe!
PlantLover - wow, that's a cool site, but the mammoth and the fish kinda gave me the willies! I think it's the eye - too realistic, LOL!
Sunflowers - tell me more - what do you mean about colored pencil "bloom?" Remember, I'm a more of a crafty type than an artsy type so this is kinda foreign to me, lol!
OK, I'm off to visit dickblick now.... just what I need.. yet another distraction-HA!
-
thenewme - by "bloom" when using wax based pencils, it means that after making several layers, or tyring to layer color, it starts to "shine" and won't take anymore. FaberCastell Polychromos are oil based, and much better made than Prismacolor ( which are known for breaking a LOT when you try to sharpen them, cuz the lead isn't well centered in the wood.) SO, tho the Prismacolor are more common, "popular" cuz they're in most of the art stores - the Faber Castell Polychromos, which are also light fast, and so perfectly centered in the wood they rearely break, are less well known. More & more artists are using them. I find Dick Blick the easiest website to search, and their customer service is fabulous.

Sunflowers, interesting about the pencils! Do the oil-based ones bleed through paper? Do they smudge or blend?
Another question for you artsy ladies - do you recommend a particular kind of fixative to use on my doodles? The pencil shading smudges, but I'm not sure what's best to use. Ideas?
-
thenewme - Faber Castell oil based, aso Lyra oil based, do NOT leak thru paper - and YES, you can blend with special blenders, AND a great book to get out of the library: Alyona Nickelsen Colored Pencil Painting Bible ( yup, the real name ;-))))
Aso, I like Cecile Baird's Painting Light with Colored Pencil
Kristy Ann Kutch Drawing and Painting with Colored Pencil
Amazon has all of them ....good luck!!!
ETA - don't know what to use to seal pencil. Wondering if the spray fixatives for CHARCOAL would work? You can get a "workable" spray fixative - meaning it can be reworked, not a permanent one that can not be reworked - and test it on a little sample of pencil work...
ONLY USE OUTSIDE or in a ery VERY well ventilated room - phhhewww...stinks, and not great to breathe in, either....
-
I've found "Krylon" matt finish spray is a great sealer for paintings, charcoal, all craft stuff.
You can get it at Menards or Home Depot where it's cheaper than at an art store.

one of the apps on photoshop did this to one of my photos...fun..
-
LOVE all the pictures and the doodles! Here are a couple of my pieces
Here is an oldie!!
I have more current ones.........didn't feel like uploading them to Photobucket at the moment
I'm sleepy! Night night! (((((((Hugs)))))))
-
LOVE, love, love the pics!!!! Thanks for posting them. Lovely to see the "life" in their eyes.
-
Lisa...it looks like you did a painting of the rose and put splatter on it. Very cool that photoshop.
Druanne...can you tell us the medium..is pastels? Very lovely. Do you have an outlet to sell your work?
-
Druanne ... WOW! You are very talented! Seriously, your work is absolutely beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
-
Thank you so much!!! I love using pastels!!! The 1st horse one was a first try using acrylic paint!!
I mainly take private commissions......but do put some of my pieces on eBay ocassionally
Here are some more pieces!
My favorite medium is pastels.......I do love them.....and colored pencils as well
Haven't had much time for art lately since diagnosed BC....haven't been in the mood much either......this thread seems to be helping a little! Thank you for starting it!
Here are some digital pieces I did with a drawing tablet & my laptop
Was going to post more but the Photobucket page just went caput and froze on me
Thank you again for this thread! I have many things started just haven't felt much like it........I DID pass my Real Estate License exam today though! I've been an aircraft mechanic for 20 years.....time to change it up a bit
-
Ok.......last one
Here are some recent ones
-
Druanne, I am new to pastels and have gotten the PanPastels we've been talking about. The pastel paper I bought makes my paintings look like yours, where we see the "tooth" in the paper. It has bugged me, but it looks okay in your pics. Do you know what I mean?
-
I taught myself how to use them too!!!........They are so much fun! So very frustrating at first!! It took me awhile to learn how to use and to appreciate the textured paper. I use Faber Castell & Rembrandt soft pastels.....AND prismacolor Nupastels.......they are hard and are great for details!! They seem to work the best on the paper..........my pastels get quite layered in areas to get the desired color effect, the textured paper is great for this as it "holds" more pastel material on the paper......I sometimes work the pastel into the paper with my finger to completely fill the "teeth".......and then will apply it loosely on top of that! Ooooooh!! A must have for me is my set of 5 blending brushes.......they resemble paint brushes except the tips are rubber. All the tips have different shapes as well......I mostly use the pointy ones......works great for extending the edges on the pastels outward for "whisker" effect or other tiny details
I have also done a few pieces on smooth Bristol paper...it will work...just won't hold as much medium....I am attaching one here
A drawing of my beloved boxer & best friend "Sir Lancelot" aka "Pookie-Bear".....he was my subject many times over.......I lost him a year ago
(I always exaggerate the eyes....make them bigger and shiny-er
Here is another on smooth black paper
My three boys (All over the rainbow bridge now
)
One more smooth paper one
-
Was reading some posts........I will use a fixiative/workable fixative on pencil and charcoal......but will no longer use it on my pastel pieces.......it seems to have an effect on the reflectivity properties of the pastels......the affects of light on pastels is what makes them so vivid! Everytime I have tried to spray them......(tried all different techniques and amounts) the turn out dull.......so I have since delivered any commission already matted and framed
I have a mat cutter
Here is one of my first few pastels.......was a foal from a horse calendar.........I LOVED it until I sprayed fixative on it
.......Oh well.....art is a learning process
and a FUN one at that!!
I love hearing about and learning new techniques and tricks if anybody wants to share!!!

Druanne - I LOVE LOVE YOUR WORK - especially the "mermaids", cow, imaginary work.I'm a real beginner, and the dust from the soft pastels was triggering some asthman problems, so I started using the Pan Pastels last Fall, and it has been such a wonderful experience. The sponges make the so "painterly" - I also use Faber Castell Polychromos pencils, and their Albrecht Durer watercolor ones.
I'm sure you'l feel more like painting as you heal from the SHOCK of diagnosis, and surgery. It was actually bc that finally got me to "slow down" and begin to study drawing, and then painting. Not during active treatment, but as I healed. For me, the SHOCK of diagnosis, was as difficult as the chemptherapy. Guess everyone is different about it. But just wanted to say, don't be too hard on yourself if you aren't back to being as artistically productive as your were before diagnosis. Your work is ENCHANTING, want to cuddle most of the furry creatures ;-)
Congratulations on the Lowest Oncotype I've ever known!!! YEAH!!!And, love your Judy Garland tag line. Just love it.
-
Fixatives - haven't liked anything I've tried so far, just bought SPECTRA FIX, Degas, Pastel Fixative Original Milk Casein Formula. WIll let you know how it works.
Agree with Druanne, don't like what any of the others have done to Pastel work. Doesn't bother me as much on charcoal - but all pastels seem to go dead...
Website for SpectraFix is www.manatural.com, and also www.spectrafix.com I bought it online from Dick Blick. BTW, made in USA...kinda nice to know that part too...
-
Thank you!! This thread has inspired me to work on some art today!! Yes I often wonder what the dust is doing to me.....I don't have asthma......but I do notice a taste in my mouth and that my throat feels different after prolonged use.......thought about wearing a dust mask but don't think I'd be comfortable!
I will have to look up PanPastels.......I have never heard of them.........I LOVE shopping at dickblick!!! For colored pencils I use prismacolor........they are so soft and blendable......LOVE THEM......I have watercolor pencils too and they can be FUN!
Thanks for the info! I am going to check out Spectrafix!! Ok........here are some more pieces....two of them are very sad.......the girl committed suicide......her name was Jasmyn.....so I put "Jasmine Angel" flowers in her hair........it was a surprise for her family.......I had only met these folks from facebook.......we are both in the aviation field........when I saw what had happened I just had to paint something for them........the next one is another heartbreaking one
.....those are the hands of my most very best friend in the whole wide world........he is holding his still born baby Jasper
.........I didn't know what to say or do for him so I painted this and gave it to him.........
the next two were fun..........I don't typically do non-living things........pretty much all animals and fantasy........now to do some ART!!!
thank you for inspiring me today!
LOL!! Everyone always wants me to do aviation art! Just not my thing......did this one to make everyone be quiet
LOL
This was fun
Sold it a long time ago
Weird to think my stuff actually hangs on people's walls........in over 10 states now!!!
-
Oh and my Oncotype score IS low hey???? I was SURE it was a mistake!!! I wish everyone's was low and none of us needed chemo.....or even better yet.....no breast cancer at all!!!.....
love and hugs
Off to do some art!
-
I've always loved photography and am just now getting moved from film to digital. Here is a digital image that I took last fall just outside of Benkelman, NE. Most of my film images are black and white and I haven't had them scanned yet. Once I do, I'll try to remember to post a sample.
I got inspired all over again looking at the artwork here. Thanks ladies!

Hi:
I just found this thread and I love it. I think it is important to CREATE something each and every day. It could be baking, playing with clay, cutting out pictures that please you, construct a simple poem, french braid your grandchild's hair...and on days when you have more time...construct a terrarium or polish some old silver pieces to recreate its luster and shine. I am enjoying reading your ideas.

wow DruAnne.. .. very nice artwork! I haven't visited this thread for so long.. I'll add it to my favorites. .. love the horses on dark paper.
-
Ooooooh look at the CLOUDS in that picture!! Love it!!!
Thank you Apple! Love working with black paper.......I was going to
post what I started working on today but all my icons on top are missing -
Ooooh it must have been my internet.......the icons are back
-
Druanne, I am VERY interested in the fact that you cut your own matting. Is it expensive? Difficult? I have so many ideas that I want to do with custom matting and don't want to pay someone else to do it. I frame a ton of my art and give it out to my kids, sell it to others and keep a lot myself. My kids love getting the pieces as they know it's a part of me that will last. What do you do for the frames themselves? I normally use a simple black frame but love double-matting or even just the use of a fillet.
-
On my way to my first radiation treeatment this morning!!!
Read this and wanted to tell you that my cutter is a "Logan Model #301-5"........very easy to use.........and you can do all kinda things with it...........AND you can get the oval cutter too!
I double mat most of my pieces
Have a great day!
