Is pain normal?
Hi everyone,
I was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma on December 20, 2011. I've been told that breast cancer doesn't hurt...but I have been feeling twinges of pain in my breast where the lump is. Is this something normal?
Thanks!

i can't say what's normal or not, but I did not have any pain. My lump was very small.

rachel- It's not very common to have pain with breast cancer but it can happen. So sorry to hear about your diagnosis but glad you have found BCO. This is a wonderful place with amazing women who will support you through this whole process. It can be very overwhelming in the beginning and it really helped me to know I could come here for information and support. (((hugs)))

I experienced twinges my third time around with ductal carcinoma. They were intermittant but like sharp stabbing twinges. They subsided when I was put on Tamoxifen.

Thanks Ladies!
I haven't met with my surgeon or anyone else yet. I have all these questions and no one really to ask them to. I am glad to have found BCO, I can see that the support here is exceptional.

I did feel a little something, a faint pain or almost pain. I changed the way I carried my shoulder bag because of this little something, but I never realized that it was ... real. Not until the mammogram showed it was cancer.

I think the statement that "breast cancer doesn't hurt" is sort of backwards. What's really correct is "pain in your breast doesn't mean you have cancer." Also, most breast pain is due to something other than cancer. However, some people with cancer do have breast pain.

Hi Rachel
I did have pain in my breast for months before I was diagnosed, and Im pretty sure it was the tumour because when the mammogram machine squished it I definitely knew all about it! Of course its different for everyone and my tumour was 6.3cms, so it was quite big. The belief that bc lumps dont hurt is a fallacy, but sadly its the one thing everyone seems to think is true. Including me, while I was waiting to be diagnosed i can remember saying to friends more than once, 'my doc isnt too worried about the lump, and it hurts so it probably isnt anything to worry about'. Ah.

I think there was a thread about this. Women who had breast pain but was told by drs that bc doesn't hurt. I heard it does in some cases. Maybe in the Search field on the left, you could type the words and see what comes up.
