Pets are good therapy

My chemo Kitty Shaman, has been there for more tears than any of the people in my life.
-
Merliee ... isn't that a sad commentary - no wonder we love our furbabies so much.
-
I too had a radiotherapy kitty. She was there every day when I came home--and she continued to be there after my husband died. I was living in a country where I could barely speak any of the language, didn't know anyone--but doctors and hospital staff, and my in-laws (who were suffering too). Without my pets, there wouldn't have been much reason to live. Daily I wondered why I went through all that treatment. If I hadn't had my pets, there would have been no reason to get up. As far as I'm concerned, they saved my life when so-called family turned their backs!
-
I feel the same for my horses and pets (2 cats and dog). When I had some rough days on chemo I would go to the barn and hug my older TB gelding and cry on this shoulder. He would quietly stand there and comfort me when some family members did not. One evening I went out to feed and had a dizzy spell (anemic from chemo + very hot July summer) - So I laid down in the barn aisle as not to pass out and hurt myself. He got VERY upset and tried to get out of his stall calling to me to move. I talked to him while lying there and calmed him that I was ok - just resting. He is my animal guardian who always looks out for me. Now his health is failing with Cushings and arthritis issues and I may have to let him go soon. This may be another rough year if I have to loose my heart horse...

I've got a -10.5 year old tervueren boy. He drags me out of the house every day. He still needs his walks every day. I'm very glad I have now him during my treatment. Sadly he was also diagnosed with cancer in December. The vet removed a 2.5 cm tumor called hepatoid gland carcinoma on his skin under the belly. He seems ok now. I hope he still has a few years left in him...
We also have a Norwegian Forrest cat named Ali. I call him our cat- therapist. He is just great. So cuddly and nice. Sleeps with the children ( or us
) at night. He is great company for me these days

(((((((((((Furbabies)))))))))))))). That horse sounds amazing. I have never owned a horse (or is vice versa) but they are such majestic creatures. I know what you mean about getting out of bed. My cat gets on my chest, gives me a glare as if to say - well, are you getting up to get my food or what? When I do get up he follows me to the bathroom, watches me brush my teeth and retrieve my water glass - as if I will forget to feed him. We go to the kitchen, I wash his food and water dishes, fill the water dish and give him fresh food. He takes three bites and is no longer interested in food at that moment! If it weren't for him, I wouldn't get out of bed.
-
My Emma does the same thing to waken me in the morning, eats 3 bites and walks away, sometimes I think she just misses me when I am sleeping

I seem unable to paste the larger picture. It shows as cut in half. Sorry for the multiple deletes.
This is "Part the Clouds" per his Jocky Club name, however, he never was raced. I got him as a 4 yr old direct from the breeder of show horses. Now going on age 23. He is the kindest gentlest horse I ever owned or known. He is my soul horse.
-
Beautiful Beautiful horse.. I like that "soul horse" I know my Liesl was that for me - she got very sick right after I was finished treatment... wondering if there is something to all that... She got something called mega-esocogophus where the escogophogus muscle goes slack and can no longer hold food down. It was all very strange and devastating for me. Now after over a year, I have Alfie- he is sweet and wonderful and I adore him but there will never be another Liesl for me... I still miss her terribly.

cp413 ... absolutely breathtaking! Its funny how one animal can be our soulmate.
Stanzie ... (((((((((((HUGS))))))))))). I keep thinking tha when I cross that "rainbow bridge" I will be reunited with all my animal companions that have gone before me. If animals aren't going to heaven, neither am I!
-
"If animals aren't going to heaven, neither am I!" I could not imagine a heaven without them!!!
-
I think it's such a special relationship because it is just what it is. No complications whatsoever. People are so much more complex.
-
CP413, Remember that Twilight Zone episode where they told the old man he could not enter with his dog....he had thought he was at Heaven's gate, but went on down the road and found out the place was really Hell and when he did get to the real Heaven, they welcomed old Rip or whatever his name was with open arms along with his master? I think you need to keep that horse and are able to.....just mho.
Stanzi, my husband had two cats that got megesphagus( I also am not sure of spelling) I think they were both Simese or part Simese. The one he took to OSU and spent a lot having him diagnosed, but there really wasn't any cure. Then when a later cat got the same thing, he knew what it was.
The Rainbow Bridge makes me cry every time I watch it. I do so hope I see George and Sydney again one day.
Maya, As far as I can tell you do an excellent job with German.....if I write it I know my word order is off even though I know they stick the verb at the end or the sentence. I know you speak French also....that is the language I am very impressed with.....it just sounds pretty. German is not pretty, very gutteral, but I like hearing it because it makes me think of beautiful Germany and Switzerland. Now Europe is a place where they really appreciate their animals.....I just could not get over all the well behaved animals I would see in restaurants with their owners. My pets would be begging for food.....and the taller ones would probably be putting their paws on my table so they could stand up and check out the menu. Hmm, now I am wondering if pets can be bilingual and understand mutiple languages. Remember Rosie the elephant in Water for Elephants.....think she only understood Polish.
Rava, Praying for your dog. My Syndey developed oral cancer......you cannot imagine how bad I felt about that one since I am a dental hygienist. I thought I should have noticed it sooner, but really did not until I saw he kept pawing at his face a lot and then I looked in and saw this huge thing and actually thought it to be an abcessed tooth. They successfully removed the tumor, but when it came back the second time I just let it run its course as he was 17 1/2 yrs old and chances were it was in other places also. He was a huge part of my life and I have never replaced him as I knew I could not, just could not stand life without a pet so got others.
You hit the nail on the head, Aussie....it's not complex, it is unconditional love.
To all of you who post on here, thank you for understanding what it is like to love and need pets.
-

CP, what a beautiful horse. I am glad he has been there for you.

Awe...these stories are very touching. I would like to put some of them on one of my blogs as examples of how animals have been therapeutic. Any objections? Of course I won't use names.
My cats wake me up every morning too. I have 4 rescue kitties. Shaman, Bella, Patchouli, and Daisy.
-
Merilee, I wish you all the very best with your pet training , also the book you want to write, but I would really prefer it if you don't take any of my quotes or comments for use. I know you are not going to use names, but I tell enough about myself, that it would not be too difficult to figure out who I am and don't always say the nicest things about my family (other than animal) and work and people I know. That is the reason I am only in a locked group on facebook and dont accept people's requests when they want to be friends. I know it is all out there for the world to see. Also I got a book on breast cancer once and you can imagine my surprise when I saw things I had written myself in it....not a lot of things, but things I really did not feel like sharing with the world, but was sharing on a breast cancer site (not this one because I could figure it out from what I said so it was quite awhile ago).
Also, I do not have the best behaved animals in the world so dont think any advice I give would be of much value to anyone.....just know what has or has not worked for me and that I love my pets very much and would be lost without them.
I honestly do think pets offer wonderful support and are good therapy.......like I said a page or so back, that article in the US weekend supplement that was in the Sunday paper supports that belief....they said it was something that people always thought, but now scientists are actually supporting the theory with data.
I think you are a wonderful person, dealing so well with your cancer, Downs Syndrome son and taking in rescue kitties and know you want to help out others, but I would just prefer to keep my posts on here. Not that they can't be read by the world also ( was a bit shocked when I found that out when I didn't even have to sign in one day to read them), but most of the people I know do not think to go to a breast cancer site unless they themselves have the problem. Hope you understand and I am in no way discouraging you other ladies from helping out with your venture. I think some of the stories you all have put on here about how your furry friends helped you when you were doing treatment are really worth sharing. That pet sanctuary I went to when I was in MO. last fall really touched my heart and what the world needs is more people like you who are willing to help with animals who need help and special attention. I am sure you will do a good job and if your venture needs any donations, I could perhaps help out there since I already contribute to just about every pet organization there is....am a softie when it comes to animals. Again, hope you understand. Marybe

Marybe, I understand and have no issue at all. This is why I always ask first. Being a mental health professional, confidentiality is always a priority I highly respect.
-
Merilee: I don't wish to have any of my stories used either. I'm also a journalist and we have to have written permission to use something like this. I also worked for several years at a book publisher and we always got written permission in correct form before our authors could use stories of this kind.
Sorry, don't mean to seem unfriendly. Some people have stalkers and you can be found through Web sites like this--and oh my, genealogy sites, they are the worst! Others use this site to vent and don't want those they care about to see it because they might not understand.
-
Marybe: Oh my, I can't accept that wonderful compliment--I use a translater for the German.
My French is bad, but good enough to get what I need. My favourite market man (he sells fresh fruits and veggies), has helped me learn the names of his produce. He's such a dear man and always asks after my cat. I was hired for my former job because I spoke English and had been through cancer treatment. We had a large number of English-speaking patients. The only problem, is we Americans speak different English than most other English-speaking countries. I swear, the first settlers to the new country must have set about to spell and pronounce most every word differently.
Yes, I love the French for many reasons, but one is that the pets get to go to restaurants too. I occasionally take my tabby, who is known throughout the neighbourhood. Most all pets are brought up going to the bistrot and are very well behaved. In the States, the health dept. would close a restaurant that allowed a pet inside. In many countries, they're just part of the family.
I remember the Twilight episode. I wouldn't want to go to a "heaven" that didn't welcome animals. I've got a bunch of pets and others I've cared about. They must be there.
3jays: Good to see you here again. As you know, I lurk more than post. Hugs to the "kids."
-
CP: I love horses too. Horses, like dolphins, seem to have an insight into our souls, helping autistic and disabled people to build bridges of communication. They are wonderful animals. I used to ride competitively, now I just love brushing and talking with horses.
Your guy is gorgeous! And obviously loves you.
-
Here are two dueling churches, "fighting" over whether or not dogs go to heaven. It's funny!
-
I like the James Thurber quote! And animals do have souls ... look into their eyes!
-
Dear CP, your horse is beautiful, I can see how you would be comforted by just leaning on his side. I had a large choclate lab that caught a lot of my tears when I was going through a difficult time in my life. And it is true, of course they have a soul, how else could they be so empathetic. Happy when you are happy, happy to offer comfort when that is what is needed.
-
my "little man " is SO "there for me, even now that bc tx is done.. with the hypo; i cry all the time.. and he's still "catching" for me!!!
Maya2 ; being an ex catholic, who converted to preby.. ans now, lapsed there, too.. (call me a christian, and thats all i want..hahah) i found that EXTREMELY funny!!!!
i also like the thurber quote.. Mur uses the one by George Burns all the time .. i wouldn't want to belong to any club that would accept ME as a member........3jays
