My GP laughed when I spoke to him about bio identical hormones and said it was all just about marketing. I did try it for a little while before I asked him about them. The doc I saw who did the saliva test and wrote the compounding order was a total rip off - he charged $180 an hour, compared to my GP who is free as his services are paid for by the government.

Even the bioidentical hormones are synthetic.  Where else could they get them from?  In their favor, what they are synthasizing are supposed to be indentical to the naturally occuring forms.  The key question is whether supplementing with hormones is safe enough to make acceptable the benefits users report.  If we knew enough, users could make an informed choice.  It would however be wrong to assume there are no risks simply by nature of that fact they are bioidentical.

The whole idea of bioidenticals is one size does NOT fit all.  They are compounded speifically for your body and your levels, and they are make from natural plant based products, not from animals or chemicals.  There is a case to be made for having balanced hormones in the body.  It costs more to see a bioidentical doctor because, unfortunately, insurance is in bed with pharma, and they don't cover the cost of BHRT.  My premarin wasn't even covered by my insurance; however, viagra is covered...go figure!

I have had both HRT, BHRT, and now nothing, and I can certainly tell the difference when my hormones are balanced.  I was much healthier, and had more energy.  I was sleeping well at night and was not tired when I woke up in the morning.  My joints did not bother me as much as they do now.  Unfortunately, I'm not sure the risks outweigh the benefits, and I'm sure there will be no studies done to try and sort that out, so, once again, women lose out.
