Elevated liver enzymes

edited November 2020 in Waiting for Test Results

I was called back by my PCP to review pre op tests and was told that I have elevated liver enzymes and need to do more blood work to confirm.  If so, then I have to get an us of the liver to see what the problem is.  My liver function tests just a year ago were so much lower, so I can't understand what is happening.  My recent sugery was a success with clear margins and nodes, I don't drink, don't take a lot of tylenol, don't take statins, so I am mystified as to what it could be.  All the rest of my blood work was fine.

Anyone else have this problem, and if so, what was outcome?

Kaara, here is hoping someone can walk you through their experience and it helps ease your mind.  That must be frightening as well as mystifying but hopefully it will all turn out okay.  Sending you Light.and hugs as you wait for information.

Kaara, here's a list of possible causes from The Mayo Clinic...

Hopefully, asmd is right about it maybe just being a lab error.     Deanna

Thank you for the input...I will hope for a positive outcome...like a lab error.

do you suffer from Lupus?  the reason I ask is because my daughter has lupus and she had a similear situation with some enzymes. she even had to have biopsy and it was fine. at the end she was told that it was due to her lupus.

Maria:  No lupus.  This was very sudden because my liver function was fine last year, so am hoping it was just a bad lab.

I had hugely elevated liver functions when I had mono. I was on and off with a fever so I didnt feel constantly sick.

Have you felt under the weather lately?

DiDel:  No, actually I was feeling better than I had in years, even with the bc dx.  I had made a major diet change in that I went to gluten free and eliminated all white carbs, eating only protein and veggies, as well as doing juicing every day.  A friend said this could have an impact on my liver enzymes, but I don't see why.  I was also taken off all of my BHRT about a month before the tests were done, but that shouldn't make a difference either.

Kaara, my liver enzymes have been elevated too. I had a liver ct, it was good. I had a nuclear bone scan, it was good. The onco said he sees a few people each week that have no issues other than elevated liver enzymes that he doesn't understand why. I don't drink either, never have, and other than BC, I've had no other health issues. He wanted to cover all bases so he sent me to a liver Dr and a bone Dr. When they did more detailed blood work, one for liver, one for bone, individually they came back normal even though the liver enzymes at the onco still are elevated at every appointment.

Susie123:  Thanks for your post.... naturally you worry when something like this happens and you have bc.  I'm having more blood work done tomorrow to see if it was a lab error, and if not, then next step would be us of liver.  I'll just take it a day at a time like everything else!  Does it ever end!

HI Kaara - I had elevated liver enzymes as well and my Onco told me that radiation and chemo can actually cause it.  Good luck, I hope everything is fine for you.

bevin:  I haven't had radiation or chemo, so that's not the reason.  I was retested today, so hope that comes out ok.  Thanks for your input.

Happy to say that my lliver enzymes came back normal on the second blood test.  It must have been a lab error, or my body was detoxing as I was juicing a lot when the first tests were run.

Thanks for all the support ladies.
