Painful Mammogram
The last time I had a mammogram it hurt so bad I cried thru the whole thing. Is there anything they can do to numb the breast before doing the test? My breast hurts just to touch it and I can't imagine squashing it. If anyone has advice I really need it. I am scared to get my mammogram.

Years ago I was complaining and was basically told to suck it up. Found out that the tech burst a cyst!!! I got to get ultrasounds for the next 2 years. You may have a benign cyst sitting somewhere that hurts so bad you can`t breathe during the mammo. Ask the tech and tell them my story if you have to. Good luck, sweetie!

Oh, also meant to say that you can time the mammo around a better part of your period cycle. Don`t get it when you`re at the sore and achey breast part. (Or is that when they want to do it?)

I'm status post mastectomy and menopause. My good breast has hurt since chemo in 2009. I want a lidocaine injection (ok many)... will they do this? Also, I was thinking of getting thermography instead but wasn't sure if they compress to get the images. They told me to rub lidocaine on it but it's not theskin that hurts. My painis deep and all over.

CAR, About all I can offer is I've had good mammos and bad ones. I finally asked a tech who gave me a good mamo about the situation, and she said it partly depended on the tech. See, they push a button for the glass to lower automatically, but from what I remember, the tech has to stop it before it gets too tight up in there. Well, I had one who apparently forgot I was standing on my tip-toes waiting for the glass thing to reach melting point, and I had to scream for her to wake up and stop it. I told her to take that glass thing off, I couldn't take the pain, and I also told her I was not comfortable standing on my toes. Well, I get a good tech later, and she said I shouldn't have had to stand on my toes, and that the glass thing is supposed to be paid attention to and stopped before it gets too tight. I HONESTLY thought at one point it was the stupid mammo that screwed up the boob that ended up getting cancer in it a few years later. Of course, since then, I've thought it was a lot of things, but no one knows what causes the fool thing.
You know, you COULD talk to your cancer doc from before and tell him about the situation. They do mammos at their offices, as well as scans. COULD BE they can just do a scan, perhaps, where nothing gets compressed, or an ultrasound like BARBE gets. I just don't think you should have another mammo, particularly with all this pain in there for two years. Also, the cancer doc can ultrasound it, to make sure nothing oddball is going on in there causing pain, and maybe that ultrasound will take the place of a mammo. I'd ask a doc about it, for sure.

Thanks I am going to call them today since I have to go get my mammo before the 25th.
