Banba:  That's a good thing!  Our holistic doctor that we see put us on a special gluten free diet, but still recommended a piece of dark chocolate for an afternoon snack.

I gave all my Halloween candy away as well. The only white food I still have in the house is my  rice. The brown rice just doesn't work for me with my Chinese cooking.

I was at a resort last week where the bread was all white bread so I went for a week without bread.I survived just fine ladies.

I went out to dinner with a group of girlfriends the other evening.  They were impressed with how well I looked.  I didn't partake in the blooming onion (loaded with fried crust) and I limited myself to one piece of dark bread.  I didn't feel the least bit deprived.  I also avoided the 2 for 1 cosmos saying that I no longer drink and drive!  I have not yet told them that I was dx with bc.

Now that I'm on this diet I no longer crave sweets or carbs.  I'm just as happy with some fruit and nuts for dessert.  Both my boyfriend and I have lost about 10 lbs each, which neither of us really needed to lose, but it's around the middle, so that is good.

Watch the movie "Food Matters"...it's great reinforcement of all we do to be healthy.

I find that living 7 k's from the store help with the temptation. They are simply not there in terms of people offereing me goodies :)

I am now down to fruit suger and honey in my coffee(maybe I should start a Stop Drinking Coffee thread but I feel shaky just thinking about it). Am I the only one who started reacting to...oh, say how sweet an apple can be?

Sorry if this appears insulting. Trust me, I have overindulged in the suger department for many years. Now I am beginning to think I might be a little extreme with all my organics and raw food.

I was really doing well with cutting out sugars for several months, but have been having a little again, like a small dessert at night. So far it has not pushed me into wanting to overindulge like I used to. I do find that I enjoy it more now that I don't have it often. And things definitely taste so much sweeter to me, but for me that makes them taste even better. Oh and I have lost almost 30 lbs, am down to size 2. I think I am really at the perfect weight for me. Also trying to stay away from white bread, white potatoes and white rice, and limit meat. I have been doing this since midMarch and it is getting easier. Any suggestions for breakfast though? I have been a raisin bran person for a long time, but it has a lot of sugar. Cheerios are okay, but what do you all do for breakfast?

Kay - have you tried Greek yogurt?  I get the plain stuff, add in some berries and a spoon of Splenda.  It's pretty yummy although I have to get the 0% fat because I don't care for the texture of the ones with fat.  Sometimes I'll eat sliced apples with cheese, eggs, or whole grain bread with peanut butter.  I have never been fond of cereal, so I have no suggestions along that line.

kay1963:  This is going to sound pretty crazy, but I usually have a salad with all kind of raw veggies on top and a hard boiled egg, and one of my juice drinks that I make fresh in the juicer.  After that, I usually feel really energetic.  If you can't stomach the thought of eating salads for breakfast, then try a protein shake made with almond milk.  You can add berries for flavor.

Good suggestions! Thanks, I will give them a try. I have thought of having salad for breakfast, but never did. Do you make your own protein shakes? What do you use? Michelle, I don't like the texture of Greek yogurt either, but have never tried the fat free. I am going to look for that in the store.

We buy protein powder (flavored choc vanilla or strawberry) then add almond milk, mix in blender and enjoy!

    Breakfast question - love it!

I blogg about these things, might want to have a look as I am transitioning into a Rawer Diet kind of thing.

I eat whole wheat Lingonbery bread(yes, it is sometimes home made), pumpernickel or rye bread with vegan soy cheese, any sprouts I have available(this morning alfalfa), fresh veggies like tomatoes, baby spinach and I usually add nuts such as almonds or walnuts and a squirt of olive oil.

Also, if you are use to a sweeter breakfast, making your own musli may sounds overwhelming but it is really simple.

    http://www.greenfootsteps.com/muesli-recipe.html

I like mine toasted so I put it on a tray(raisins/dries fruit are added after), add some honey/stevia and toast it for 10 minutes in 200 degrees. Celcius that is :)

I'm mixing 2 T of chia seeds into my morning Fage yogurt, and it helps me stay full, and provides a good source of vegetarian Omega-3's.  Loving the chia seeds.

I started WeightWatchers about 15 days ago, I'm down about 7 lbs (those early dieting pounds come off so quickly, wish it stayed that way).  I have found the WW is helping with the sugar consumption, because fruits and most veg are "free" and so I have them instead of sugar.  Got a monster yeast-infection which I KNOW comes from sugar by experience, and finally convinced myself to quit again.  Have not had too bad of cravings, had a little Thanksgiving pie today as an exception, but put agave in the fresh cranberry sauce and didn't notice the difference between agave and sugar.

Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate!  I'm grateful for this year and another attempt at taking more control over my health.

This is a wonderful thread.  It took me three days to read through it. Thank you all!

Since I had my bmx (bmx and chemo for a total now of 2 months) I have put on quite a spread around my middle.  I was definitely not overweight to begin with but certainly am now-- up two sizes.  I can say that some of this is from drugs and from less physical activity but certainly i am eating comfort foods like I have not done before!!  Sugar sugar sugar.  I generally eat a low carb diet and now I HAVE to get off the sugar-- making hot flashes worse, I feel crappy both physically and emotionally and I am unnecessarly lethargic.

In the past few weeks I made promises to myself that I have not kept. This time I will keep it!  low carb until holidays over and then, off the sugar-- all forms of it!

    Anyone else having holiday difficulties?

Quaatsi:  Sugar is very addicting and is in almost everything we eat, so we have to be vigilant about giving up the things that are the worst offenders.  We have given up all white carbs...bread, pasta, cereal, white potatoes and rice, etc.  This was about two months ago, and we have each lost about 10-12 lbs, all from our middle.  It works!  I'm so pleased with our "new look" that I don't even miss the dessert or white stuff.  We weren't overweight either, but the pounds just melted off us, and we seemed to get more toned.

These sugary kind of foods are the worst for preventing cancer, so that is another reason to eliminate them from your diet.  This has been reinforced at the recent conference in San Antonio.

I think it's ok to cheat once in a while...like for a holiday meal, but not consistently.  We really try to stick to vegetables, salads and proteins. We eat sweet potatoes, brown rice, and an artichoke or quinoa pasta that is just as good as regular.  Don't feel like we're missing out on anything.

Happy New Year's Eve everyone!  What a great time to reevaluate our diets and our relationship with the white stuff!  I've lost almost 10 lbs since mid-November, but these past 2 weeks have been a STUGGLE and I gained 2 back.  So... in 2012 it's time to recommit to a healthier diet full of fruits and vegetables and very very little s.u.g.a.r.

The last time I gave up sugar it took so much willpower but I felt so much better. I wasn't tired all the time. I lost 30 pounds and I did it but then I went back to the sugar. It is so difficult I am going to try again. I'll check on how everyone is doing and I'll keep it one hour at a time. Sugar makes my stomach bloat so much! I used to eat the sugar free chocolate pudding for the evening destress after work treat. That worked pretty good, or maybe a Starbucks once in awhile with the sugar cut in half. Great topic.

Just found this thread. I am like a junkie when it comes to sugar. No packaged cookies or cheap candy bars, I have a jones for the good stuff ( and I love to bake). So cold turkey was the only way to go. I still eat fruit but use my ( new!) juicer a lot and put more veggies than fruit in it. My treat is 0 fat Fage plain yogurt with fresh berries and a drizzle of honey. I have lost about 5 lbs. just by eliminating the baked goods and I was not overweight so it's quite shocking to realize how much sugar I was eating.

Sugar is definitely the enemy...I feel so much better when it's not in my diet, along with all the other white stuff that converts to sugar.  I lost over 12 pounds just by eliminating white from the diet.  We went on a cruise for New Years and cheated a little, now my body is really feeling it!  I'm happy to let it go again.  Good luck everyone with your journey to healthy eating!

Just stopping in to wish everyone some encouragement on your healthier eating plans!  I don't need to lose weight but I am diabetic and the white stuff is something I avoid.

Kaara - keep up the good work, awesome results so far.  It's hard to go on a cruise and not indulge a bit!

Kinda glad this thread gotten woken up!!  I would love to hear more about what constitutes "processed food" for all of you. Obviously, SUGAR...  but, what else and what is left? what kind of food/ dishes do you eat if there is no processed in them?  I am curious about the range of thought on this.  In some ways, one might go back to a paleolithic diet (which is too extreme for me since I like my food hot).

I have cut back on my sugar for the past  month but not OUT.  I am tired enough that I cannot think of meals to make that do not have anything processed in them but, like today we are going to have Fish tortilla crusted (gotta be some white in there!), rice and salad.  I cannot eat a meal after about 4pm because I am uncomfortable. I need to find somethign to eat around 6-7 because I get hungry and unfortunately that is when I go for the sugar....

plus, I put on a total of 15 pounds since surgery,  10 of them since chemo.  I need those 10 off for my comfort.  I was definitely NOT overweight prior to dx but am now....

I think processed food is any food that has more than 5 ingredients in the package label.  Is it Michael Pollan who coined that idea?  (I think so -- NY Times food writer who has also written a number of books about food).

And happy new year Michelle and all!

The holidays have destroyed my good behavior with sugar/food (and I'm also a diabetic) -- so I'm back on the good girl wagon.  My weight loss has stayed off but my blood sugar has not been as good as it was.... so that's my incentive!

For me, processed means sugar, white flour, white rice, most cereals, white pasta, and anything made with those ingredients.  I avoid white potatoes except for occasional small servings.  I allow a few whole grains and small servings of brown rice and sweet potatoes.  And I do eat most fruits (but very little dried fruit), beans, a bit of dark high cocoa-content chocolate.  I don't limit lean proteins but try to avoid lots of fatty meats.

I think my diet resembles an Atkins "maintenance" diet, and try to keep my daily total carb intake under 100 grams.

At the end of the day, portion size matters a whole lot!

Oh, women.  Whenever I need something, BC.org comes through!  I'm going to go back and read, but just wanted to say hello.  I'm trying to give up candy and alcohol as of Jan 1.  :)  Of course, since candy is out, I've found some lovely baked goods to substitute.  Ugh.  I've ALWAYS had this sweet tooth.  Anyway, I'm going to look back and read and try to get some advice.  I thought candy was my biggest culprit, so I'd start there by saying NO entirely.  We'll see!  Thanks everyone.

I really try now to read labels to see how much sugar there is. I do sometimes have a small piece of dark chocolate as well. It is just a small amount and it really does satisfy the craving. I stopped sugar in my coffee totally but sometimes I will use a little agave nectar in it. Does anyone have any thoughts on agave? Is it a healthy substitute because I would never use the artificial sweetners ugh

A tablespoon of agave nectar has 16 "sugar" carb grams.  A tablespoon of white sugar has 12 "sugar" carb grams.  And it has 14 more calories.  A tablespoon of honey is about the same as the agave nectar.  I guess it depends on your objective whether or not agave is better.   From a metabolism perspective, sugar is sugar.  If the only sugar you're using is a bit in your coffee, I'd say use whatever you prefer.

I use Splenda in my coffee and my Greek yogurt.

You can check the nutritional information on almost any food at

    www.calorieking.com

It's very handy because you can scale the portions and it will recalculate the information.

Lilah - thank you!  I'm happy the hair is coming in pretty quickly.  And Happy New Year to you, too!

I use maple syrup when I need to use sugar mainly because it was recommended in "The Cancer-Fighting Kitchen" -- a cookbook by Rebecca Katz. Maple syrup seems to have fewer calories, is an anti-oxidant (I believe) and it takes very very little to sweeten something.  Just a possibility when you absolutely must use sugar.

Maple syrup is 12 sugar carb grams and 52 calories per tablespoon.

It's a very good point that someone might find a particular food "sweeter" and therefore use less of it, which would make it a better option.

I use a little real maple syrup when I make a baked apple pancake, as a treat.  I dip my fork in the syrup and then stab a bite of the pancake.

Good information!  The nutritionist/RD  with whom I work says that agave is not that good for you in that it increases your insulin pretty fast....for what that is worth.

I have never used artificial sweetners in my life and was mostly a very good weight for my size (except after bodacious amounts of prednisone in my 30s).  Since this dx I have put on weight and have tried splenda which I find, on some level, OK. I do use very little sweetner on anything anyway but cream of wheat needs it!!! coffee black. I love plain yogurt! I try to enjoy foods as they come but I do have a weakness for any carbs when my blood sugar gets low or I am tired.  I am going to the doctor to see if something like Metformin might be helpful (I have diabetes in my family).  i find it hard to get through a day without lots of carbs.

The AntiCancer book says agave is a good substitute for sugar. It has a lower glycemic index so doesn't cause the spike in insulin that sugar and white flour do. At least I think that is the reasoning, I know he thought it was a much better alternative than sugar.

I didn't see your post Quaatsi. That's interesting. I will reread what AntiCancer book says about agave and report it back. Maybe chemo brain is striking me again.
