Thanks for the link to the New York Times article. According to the article, exercising 5 times a week for 30 minutes lowers reocurrence by 40%. That's pretty good odds.
-
Where did the warm weather go?? It is damp and yucky feeling out and if it was a little colder I would say snow. Iwork the next two nights, taking a friend out to lunch today, need to pack, and leave on Monday. I hope I get everything done if not then too bad. It will get done eventually. Maybe next year!!
-
Cdairth, Yes, exercise has more impact than Chemo and Rads! That's why I love it, anyway, there is not down side, it feels so good to be in good shape.
50 minute bike ride in 48 degrees. Brrrrr!!! Invigorating, but even DH says that's as cold as we're going. We may get another on in tomorrow.
-
It is freezing here, too. I think it was 29F today. I did not ride my bike, but did a nice walking home from work with groceries.
-
48F here again today and we braved a 70 minute bike ride, brrrrr!!! Glad that we did it. Now home and cozy warm with my feet up!!! 2 more days of work and then off for 2+ weeks, yay! AND it is going to warm up some! Yay!!
-
Hooray, the sun's out after several days of dark & drizzly skies. I just did a 45 minute walk for the first time in about two weeks, and it felt absolutely wonderful. I've had a horrible time sleeping the past 2 nights (still only about 70% recovered from my cold/flu bout), and now getting really bad leg aches that I have to get up and do something about (pain reliever, micowaved heating pads). Has anyone else who's been sick had that? I can't figure out if it's from whatever bug I've had, the homeopathic meds, not walking, not taking some of my supplements or what.
I hope everyone's Christmas Eve Week is off to a great start! Deanna
-
Loved the cartoon Survivor!
Interesting info on the Sam-e, I think I might give it a try for my joint aches, my feet/ankles are the worst. Deanna, sorry to hear of your leg aches, that's the pits, and I'm hoping its from the sickness and will disappear soon. Glad you got some sun finally. We've had clear chilly days, upper 50's for highs everyday.
Managed a brisk 30 minute walk on my lunch hour today. I will try and get a treadmill walk in before work the rest of this week, since my hours will be 8 to 5 instead of 7:30 to 4:30 while my coworker is on vacation, then I'm off til Jan 3rd! WOOHOO. Babysat all day/night/day this weekend. My back/arms are really sore. Lots of carrying baby girl and dancing!!
-
Deanna, you don't think it's a clot do you? I hope you get checked out. It is likely nothing, but somehow this came to mind so I thought I should mention it.
Today is a day of rest!! I do that once in a while.
-
Thanks for your concern, Spring and Kari. I don't think it's a clot b'cuz the aching is the same in both legs; but I may have figured it out. I was listening to a Doctor Radio show in the car this afternoon, and I had a Eureka moment when they were talking about muscular back pain that can radiate down your legs. And I remembered that I wore high heels to a couple of Christmas parties this past week -- the first time I've worn heels since chemo -- and I'm thinking maybe that's what started it, because I have literally lived in sneakers, flip flops and flats for the past 3-1/2 years, so walking and dancing the night away in high heels must have used muscles I haven't used in a long time! Anyway, I hope that's all it is!
I looked into a yoga class today that I want to try in January. You girls have really motivated me! Deanna
-
Deanna- so good to hear you think your pain might be from wearing high heels. Is the pain subsiding, though? I have been thinking of you a lot since you wrote and Spring thought of a possible clot. I also had been sending some positive thoughts your way. Hope you are healing and able to walk. Yoga would definitely stretch you out.
I am on the mending too. Had been feeling a lot better and did a great walk home from work yesterday. About 35 minutes. H on the other hand had oral surgery. No wonder... he smokes a lot. But now, he is not working at all b/c he takes serious meds for pain. He did not work much before either, so it is not a surprise. I really must leave this marriage.... and soon. It is too stressful to carry another person on my "back" . It is so exhausting and I am getting fed up with taking care of bills and life in general. I so want to be free again! (I am just venting and putting my "wish" out into the universe, maybe someone "Upstairs" is listening.
I wish you all a wonderful holiday!
-
Survivor, may 2012 be the year you are unburdendened!
Deanna, I bet it was the heels! Those thinks are killers!
Today I think I may leave work early and do a bike ride with DH. We'll see if he's available! It is supposed to get up to 60 today, though it is 51 right now.... In any case, today is my last day of work until Jan 6th! So there will be lots of bike riding ahead if today doesn't work out! Yay!
DD is home, she is so sweet! it is so nice not to be recovering from some surgery or medical procedure this Holiday. This hasn't happened since 2007, before I was dx'd!!! Feels good!!!
-
Deanna, by george I think you've got it! LOL This happens to me all the time since being on Arimidex, I play and I pay for days....even yoga warrior poses kill my feet/ankles and they will ache for days after. I wore heels to our work xmas party and I paid for that as well. I'm like you, flats, sneakers, flip flops.
Survivor, sending you so much positive energy to be "FREE" very very soon my dear.
Spring, smiled at the vision of you home with NO medical stuff, just pure family love surrounding you. And BIKE ON sista!!
I had yoga last night, had a bad headached all afternoon but went anyway. Only 8 of us in class, very nice. That's it for 3 more weeks for yoga though, the facility is closed next 2 Mondays. Got up early and did 30 minutes on treadmill and 10 min of yoga stretches after then came to work today. Tonight I babysit, my body is still crying after the weekend babysitting.
Have a magical day all.
-
Kari, it was a magical day! Still feeling joyous!
Work is done! Whoot! Yipee!
50 minute bike ride, and get this, it hit 63 degrees in Raleigh, NC today, on Dec 20th! Pinch me!!! I wonder if we'll keep biking in January? Could it be???
Took off yesterday and had dinner out with gf's. It was a blast! I laughed so much I ran my eye make up. LOL!!
-
Springie I'm smiling ear to ear reading your post!! YIPPEE!!

Merry almost Christmas Eve, everyone. Deanna
-
Wow, Deanna, I actually did NOT know that exercising in "nature" was so much better for us than exercising inside. I'm glad it stayed warm long enough for us to be bike riding in December! The greenway trails are beautiful. Certainly qualify as "nature"!
So yesterday, Christmas Eve, did 60 minutes of Yoga stretching.
Today, Christmas Day, we took a 50 minute bike ride.
I have eaten too much. Back on the "wagon"!!
Merry Christmas everybody!
-
Hi Ladies- hope Everyone is doing well. I had a nice X-mas at friends house w/out H being there. Ate a lot of foods that I don't normally eat, so now I am going to do extra workouts. I rode my bike and had lots of great, long walks in the past few days, all outdoors. However, I am ready for a gym workout tonight. Granted the gym is open.
Thank you all for your support on FB and of course here too.
-
Traveling to Oregon early tomorrow to visit older DD, all three of us going, shold be fun! Will not be online for a while, at least a day or so. Happy New Year! (almost!)
-
Springie- have a fab trip!
-
Happy New Year Everyone!
Hope the illnesses are past and people are starting to feel better. I've not been quite as good lately about working out (work has been busy busy) but, got through the Holidays down a couple of pounds so I'll take it. Been on a real yoga kick lately, going to try to get some lifting and treadmill time today
-
Hi, girls... Hope everyone's enjoyed the first day of 2012.
Kate, I'm so impressed that you got through the holidays down a couple of pounds! Good for you!!!
I walked a good 5 to 6 miles today. I wasn't wearing a pedometer, but got on a lengthy phone call, catching up with my sister, and just kept walking and talking. It was wonderful because I wasn't even aware of the distance or time (1.75 hrs.) until I got back -- a great start to 2012!
My New Year's wish is that next time this year we'll all be happy and even healthier than we are today! Deanna
-
Deanna, that's an impressive walk! I got a new pedometer for X-mas; I must remember to wear it. I start Yoga next week. I finally found a really good sports bra/prosthetic. I paid for the classes so I hope I that will force me to go.
-
Walked an hour today -- probably 3.5 miles or so. (I've got to get a new pedometer, too. I've worn out 2 of them in the past couple of years.) DH & I also joined a new gym today, and I have an appointment with one of their trainers tomorrow a.m. I am determined to get into the best possible shape & condition this year! Deanna
-
Had an orientation at my new gym yesterday, and since I'd never even seen some of the equipment they have there and want to be sure I'm using it with proper form, I signed up for several sessions with a trainer. He'd never heard of LE, but seemed to catch on quickly to my upper body limitations/concerns.
It sounds like those of you on the East coast are freezing this morning! It's supposed to hit 82 here today (10 degrees above average), so hopefully a warming trend will be headed your way! Deanna
-
Ooooooo. Nice and warm in California. Wish I was there. Did 45 minutes of intervals on my bike. I will try and go to the gym and do intervals before rads tomorrow. Pilates on Friday.
-
Hello Ladies- Happy and Healthy New Year to you all!
Yeah Deanna, it is cold in NY, I too wish was in Cali. Good for you and DH for joining a new gym. I should sign up for a trainer session, too. Thank you for reminding me that I forgot to do when I joined back in last August.
Otherwise, I am doing all right. House-sitting for a dear friend until next week so it feels like I am taking a vacation. I go and have been going to gym daily, as I am very close to it. I did workouts almost every day during the holiday. In fact, I should start getting ready. I am doing yoga again in an hour.
Sending love to you all!
-
Happy New Year! Its been a few weeks since checking in here. I'm still here! Been dealing with some hand swelling and saw LE physical therapist and getting fitted for sleeve/gauntlet soon. UGH! It was an emotional day for me yesterday dealing with this but I'm dealing with it ok now. Lots of caring people/sista's out there! I am blessed.
The highlight of my exercise while on vacation was a long hike, the uphill part was TOUGH! Thinking of you all, always am....HUGS and let's get Rockin bodies in 2012!! heehee
-
Bummer about your LE, Kari! I wonder if you did something to spark it? Travelling seems to set off my truncal LE, although I've never been able to pinpoint the reason. I've also wondered recently if sugar can play a role, as I wasn't as careful about my diet during the holidays as I usually am, and I had some bad LE days. Hopefully, your PT can get yours under control quickly. By the way, I noticed earlier today that someone posted a link to an LE self massage video on another thread -- I think the one called Time Period For Developing LE. I haven't watched it yet, but it sounds good. // So glad you get to housesit this week, survivior! What a treat for you! // I had my first ever session with a fitness trainer this a.m., and I loved it! Wow, I wish I could afford more than the handful of sessions I've booked. He wasn't familiar with LE, but he caught on really fast, and was super careful with me. // Here's to Rockin bodies in 2012! Deanna (Not sure why I can't do paragraphs for some reason...)
-
Happy New Year everyone!
We visited out west and while in Portland got Voodoo doughnuts and I'm still on a sugar high! Back on the diet and tomorrow will be warm enough to cycle. (We just got in late last night and I worked today! Sort of surreal!)
I am sure i've gianed weight, started dieting and tracking on "MyFittnessPal.com" again today!
We did take some long walks while out West, but didn't exercise regularly like normal. Ate too much! Ate meat! Sugar! It was good, but I'm back on the wagon now!
Kari, I am sorry about the LE. I find this one of the most upsetting things about having been diagnosed with BC. You are not alone. There are some great LE threads on BC.org - let me know if you need help in finding them.
Deanna, YOU GO GIRL with all your WALKING!!!!
-
Kari, sorry to hear you joining us with lymphedema. You have a good therapist?
Unusually warm weather here, great out walking yesterday. I think it will be back to yoga tonight
