I need one Rosemary, you know I do believe avocadoes are a natural form of fat that in doses is not harmful. I think we just eat too much food and too much fat overall.

Cholesterol tests are kind of funny things in that you can't really compare them with anybody else's. A portion of that is just genetics and has nothing to do with lifestyle, diet, exercise....I'm sure we all know someone with perfect counts that should be horrible and vice versa. Probably best to keep an eye on yours through your history.

    Sam,

You have to get a copy of your test from the Dr.. There's different components to cholesterol tests. Each part has its own significance to the overall number of total cholesterol. If one part is high then some people are helped by eating a certain food each day which will get it into proper range. Something must be out of range on your report which is taking it over into the higher total range. It may be an easy food fix. Get a copy and maybe we can fix it. Don't worry, you won't have to eat snake tails or something like that.

Rose, have you seen the new Kashi cereal yet made with oats, wild blueberries and green tea? That one doesn't need doctoring for flavor. It's good. I'm going to the store today to buy a few boxes of that one. I only wish it had more fiber. That Cinnamon one is really crunchy.

Cowgirl, yep it's time to go and find out your numbers. You never know, they may be just right.

I'll look for the new Kashi cereal next time I go to Whole Foods. I got the cinnamon one at Trader Joe's - they have better prices but a less complete selection.

I didn't get one cholesterol score. I have one that was 156 (low was < 200) , and an HDL that was 76 (low was > 40). My hope is that I'll be one of those people for whom it isn't an issue. My Mom broke her wrist in her 50s and is on Fosamax, so I'm more concerned with keeping my bones together.

I got this South Beach thing at the grocery store. Mostly it's an advertisment for Kraft foods. But they suggest an egg white omlet (I get egg beaters) with 1/2 cup of black beans. That's got about as much fiber as some of the cereal I eat and it would be something different so I'm going to try it. Overall their menus hit the calorie and the fiber totals I'm looking for, but they all went over 30g of fat.

This week it's oatmeal cookies (with some of the Kashi cereal ground up) with applesauce/apricot substituted for 1/2 the butter. The cookies were cakey, but not bad. the apricot adds a nice flavor.

    Rose,

Two of the totals are divided into each other, and of course I forget which two, and you get a score of 2, 3 or 4 etc. you don't have to think about it, your totals look marvelous. There's a research Dr. out there who thinks that BC and high cholesterol have a connection.

Problem is every time they do a study on women they don't get baseline cholesterol numbers from the ladies, so he can never prove it. He's right though in thinking that it should be one of things that is looked at to see if there is a connection.

I went out to get that new cereal, it's $5 a box. The others are like $2 and change. Just put a few wild blueberry's in there and watch the price double? Hmmmm.

If you add a cup of green tea to the mix you can probably even up with whatever is in the pricey cereal.

Alot of advisors say to get the nutrients in you diet rather than in supplements, and who knows if green tea doesn't hold the same.

Why oh why is the good stuff so expensive? I keep wondering what is so high about certain foods? I would buy green tea Rose it is much cheaper than that.

Thanks for the hints about eating goodies, gals. Rose, my hero, I can't imagine you giving in to temptation, but I know that you would then exercise off the calories.
I have been trying to be better at eating goodies at my customers houses. One thing that has helped me is the knowledge that if I dip into M&M's in a bowl, is that other germy hands might have been touching them.
When my lat flap was cancelled because I had been fighting off a cold or flu for weeks, I realized that was what might have happened. I was cleaning a house and was dipping into the M&M's where there were young boys who are always sick. A few days later, I was feeling semi-yucky and that continued for about 6 weeks-serves me right.
Pen-thanks for reminding me about the mints-I had read that a while back-to use mouthwash when feeling like indulging in junk.
So I bought some Altoids to take with me when I work-maybe that will work.
I will finally see a podiatrist about my plantar faciitis. My appt last week was cancelled because the Dr. had the flu.
I am so tired of limping around for 4 months.

    Oh Denise,
you made me laugh, I read a study years back where they tested peanuts at a sports bar and guess what was in it?? uric acid (the stuff in pee) since some gentlemen at the bar hold on to things in the bathroom and NOT wash hands.

Hope that helps next time with temptation lol

My cholesterol HDL is 84 and LDL is 109, I don't believe cholesterol has to do with bc.

I was a bad girl with diet this weekend, started Saturday with chocolate cake (was my birthday), had some beer and today I had real chocolate.
As of tomorrow, I wow to be good or I double my workout hike, how about that? I should make my DH read this so he can hold me to it

    God Bless

    Calico,
Well, that eliminates the chips, nuts and M&M's. Now I need to think of something to help me to avoid the Hershey's kisses, since they are wrapped.

    Calico,

Nope, I too don't believe that high cholesterol causes BC. The researcher is looking for a connection. One may go hand and hand with the other and thus the next step would be to advise women to get a mammogram, or something like that.

You may be able to get that LDL down under 100 by eating walnuts and almonds every day:

Hope you don't mind me jumping in here but I'm starting the South Beach diet today and am looking for support to keep me on it. I decided this would be the best one for me since my husband is diabetic and we have basically eliminated all white stuff from our diets anyway. These first two weeks are going to be rough but I'm hoping it will jump start me and motivate me more.

I lost 30 lbs during treatment last year. I started gaining it back during rads last summer and just seem to keep gaining. Have gained almost 15 lbs back since I finished chemo last May.

We eat alot of high fiber foods anyway due to my husband's diabetes. He keeps losing and I'm gaining! Just don't get it. He has lost over 30 lbs since June about the same time I started gaining mine back. We eat basically the same stuff. I hate blaming the tamoxifen but sometimes I wonder.

    Thanks,
    Carol

I am thoroughly ashamed of myself I do so well on the WW plan while at work but the minute I get home the diet goes out the window!!
I stopped at Tim Hortons on my way home from work Sunday for a coffee for hubby. I bought a dozen assorted donuts and 2 chocolate covered cinnamon buns, you can guess the rest I had 3 donuts scarfed down in no time

Anyhow........Today I am back at it again!!

Wish me luck, I seem to have no self control these days.

    Tina

sorry for the overuse of sad faces

Tina, sounds like you should send hubby for his own coffee!! Don't beat yourself up, we all have our bad days - just be sure not to turn it into a bad week and you'll be fine.

    Good Luck!

TINA - you gotta get a handle on those donuts!!! They go down so fast and they are absolutely the worst thing to eat - except that they taste great. Were you hungry when you went in?

You need a plan for when you get home from work. Like six big glasses of water so there isn't any room for anything else. Or maybe one little treat, but not a whole bag of them.

Wow eee hey everyone! Rose as always you are so correct hope in a bottle is expensive. Denise, you are a rock with this journey! Calico it makes sense you know???

Carol we love to have you!

Tina we all have slips, you just have to get on the horse again. That is the main thing, don't give up on low fat! But donuts are light and fluffy, and I tend to eat way too many.

I am figuring out dinner, I have to thaw something quick. My car is acting it's age, so I am doing freezer eating, and we have some steamed veggies!

I made another pot of beans last night, a pot of brown rice, even cooked some meat for hubby to get a taste! The kids just eat it up! I am beginning to think it is our new Sunday night dinner, they got tired of tuna.

UH-OH, here come the donut police:

One donut if I'm reading this correctly is = to 22.90 grams of fat!

    Carol,

I watched the same thing happen with family members. Husband was diagnosed with diabetes and they both ate the same things and he lost tons of weight. My SIL lost some but nothing compared with her husband. I think it's because the men are allowed more calories then we are? Whatever it is, it's annoying.

Rosemary, that was like an electric shock to my brain, thanks, I needed to see than in black and white

I am sipping on a can of fresca right now, back on track.

    Thanks ladies, Tina

    Tina,
I know how you feel-as I have so little will power lately.
Lets try again to be good!!
Rose-chewing gum is a good idea, but I quit chewing gum about 35 years ago when I realized that it rips out my fillings.
I saw my podiatrist today about my plantar faciitis. I had to buy new walking shoes to wear around the house all day. Yuck-I hate to wear shoes around the house. My problem was definitely caused by doing aerobics in my socks. I have to use ice packs twice a day, do even more foot exercises, and my Dr is calling my ins. to see if it covers custom made orthodics. I have to see her again in 3 weeks. She liked my "boob heel" idea, but wants me to try to go without it.
Of course, it goes without saying that if I weighed less, my foot would feel better.

My doctor told me today that heel inserts make the problem worse because the angle they put your foot at isn't good for your arch. Geesh.

Nurse told me to put a water bottle in the freezer then, when frozen, roll it around with your arch - works them out and ices it down at the same time.

Dr also told me NEVER go barefoot - I don't like that either.

I have some inserts he sold me to try for a couple of weeks and if they help, we'll get real ones made. Also gave me a couple weeks worth of Celebrex to work on the inflamation.

Fresca is great. Baked goods are such dangerous territory.

Cavemen aside I try not to go barefooted. That was how I injured my foot in the first place.

Denise - maybe you could chew on toothpicks?

    Tina,

I was shocked also. A good replacement for donuts is a whole/multi grain bagel. It's sweet for some reason. You get to chew for a long while, it's filling and has less then 2 grams of fat. I have one of them and I don't need to eat again till dinner.

I know that is how you eat too many donuts, they are light as air! A bagel will fill you up, I tried some whole grain mini ones, they aren't bad!

    Denise,
I had a couple of things that made me wear shoes most of the time. I stepped on a needle before I got married, I lost it about 6 mos before I stepped on it. I had looked for it a whole lot, and vaccumed that area so often you would think I got it.

Then I got heel spurs, I wear clarks only now and my feet are fine. But I was a barefoot baby like you! I really hate shoes on my feet! They seem to confine me, my middle kid is the same way! He rarely wears shoes!

Nothing better than the feeling of carpet between your toes! But now we have mostly hard wood.

    KariLynn,
Celebrex or an anti-inflammatory like Motrin would be prescribed for "normal" people but I have liver damage from my liver mets, so they are not advised for me.
The water bottle sounds like a good idea.
I did wear my new shoes all day and although I really hate them, my heel actually does feel better.
Maybe in the future, when my foot is better, I could go to some kind of structured slipper with my orthotics????
Rose-okay,I will dip some toothpicks in dark chocolate, and gnaw on those for awhile.

    Hi everybody,

For the chocoholics among us...I love Fudgsicle brand fat-free fudgsicles (70 calories each) and they're the only chocolate I eat these days. They really help my craving! I also like Dole brand fruit juice bars (popsicles...only 30 calories each).

Also, the most comfortable shoe I've ever owned is Nothinz. They're like Crocs but better. They cost $30.

    Hugs, Liza
