I'm the only one in my family with cancer besides my paternal aunt who had stomach cancer, but I'm a downwinder (lived in path of above-ground nuclear fall-out early 60s). I attribute my diagnosis to environment.  My dad died of COPD related disease--not cancer.

I was diagnosed with ILC and DCIS and some micro spots in August. My Dad had testicular cancer when he was about 40 and prostate cancer when about 80. I am 63. My cancer did not show on any mammogram and I haven't missed for 20 years. It was found  when they were trying to take out a "precancerous area" that did show as calcifications on my August mammnogram. It was also soft so there was no way to have been able to feel it. My oncologist feels I had had this for years- at least ten! Now I am stage 3 and had 11 nodes involved. Not good but Er/PR+. Just finished Dense Dose ACT and have radiation in Feb and March. I will start Arimedix in January. Had a double masectomy as the MRI showed a wierd spot on the other breast but it was nothing. I am glad I did the double though.

Balsie thanks for the info on the Reumofan.  I am going to pick some up this week.  I have been off the Arimidex for about 2 1/2 weeks now.  Yesterday was the first day I could get up for a chair with no pain so it's taken that long for the effects of the med to wear off.  Now I know it was the Arimidex.  Ketchem wanted me to  stop it for a couple weeks to see if it was the med.  I plan to start taking it again (very nervous about it) on Friday.  I figure I'll have about ten days of no work and I can take the Reumofan with it.  Where did you find this and what made you want to try it?  I really appreciate this info!

On another note.......do you have any issues with lymphedema?  Unfortunately I have to deal with this on a daily basis.  I wrap at night and wear a sleeve most days.  I typically end up seeking therapy on the arm every 5 or six months.

I found Reumofan Plus at a chiropractic/massage therapy office in Grand Rapids.  A Para in my classroom was telling me about all of her aches and pains which sounded very much like the pain I was having from arimidex...so she brought me a few to try and so far they have really helped and I am really hoping it is the thing that will work for me and others like you...because I agree with Ketchum that it is important to stay on the"A" but geez it is just no quality.  I did find it on the internet too. I do not have problems with Lymphedema...I feel so bad for you, I have heard that is so painful and uncomfortable.  I do dry brushing everyday to try to avoid that problem but I think I just lucked out. dry brushing is with a soft bristled brush and you brush down your arms towards your heart to get the lymph system  to flow better. If you can't find Reumofan Plus I can send you some.  Just in box me your address and I would be happy to , I did call essence of health in duluth to see if the carried it but they don't. I would be willing to bet Sharon would order it though.

    Happy thoughts for you

Balsie thanks again.....  I will look around tomorrow after school and see if there is anywhere in my area that carries this product.  If I cannot find it I would greatly appreciate your help in getting some.  I am really hoping this drug will enable me to stay on the Arimidex.  As you said, I think it is important to be on the Arimidex also but it was to the point I wasn't functioning.  Yeah the lymphedema is not fun,  Mine started right after my sentenal node biopsy so I know I was prone to it.  On a happier note we are taking the students up to UMD tomorrow to do some running/walking on the track.  I'm hoping it will make the day go by fairly fast.  Two more days and counting.....can't wait for break!

My father had prostate cancer, bladder cancer, pre cancerous skin cancer.  His two brothers also had prostate cancer.  Interesting as there is no known history of breast cancer in the family except me.

My father had a sister who was diagnosed with breast cancer in her 30's.  My father lived to 75 free of cancer.  My mother had a brother who died of a brain tumor at around age 70; she lived to 79 cancer-free.  Not very much cancer in either family, although we don't know very much about my father's side - he didn't keep in touch with his extended family very well.

That's an interesting article.  Father had no cancer in his lifetime, nor did his Mother.  Yet, it was my Mother who had breast cancer and her Father who had prostate cancer.

JEAN0078..I applaud you for doing the double if that is what brings you comfort, it is up to you.  I have ILC since 2009, stage 3b, with 30/31 positive nodes.   They also told me I had to have had it for 10 or more years.  2nd tumor in armpit was size of grapefruit nestled in there.  Shocking, huh!  I was 52 and had baby at 40, could have had since breastfeeding?  Wow.  My Dad died of melanoma and mom survived uterine cancer 10 plus yrs. Fathers sister only known breast cancer Dx in very large family.  I am taking arimidex, but they feel it is best.  You have had quite a year, but I hope 2012 is much better for you.  Take care.

My father died of lung cancer a few years ago.  Both of my parents were heavy life-long smokers.  Mom continues to chug along at 80 with emphyzema and continues to smoke heavily and no cancer.  Shheeesh and I remember all those road trips with my parents puffing away with all the car windows closed up tight.

I found this quite interesting. My dad died at age 79 from prostate cancer. He was diagnosed at age 69. I was diagnosed with ILC in 2008 at age 56. My dad had an older sister die of breast cancer but I don't know what type. I think she was diagnosed in later stage of the disease although I don't remember too many details. It was a long time ago.

I had a younger cousin die from breast cancer in her 40s. It was devastating for her family; she left behind two lovely daughters. Her dad is my Dad's half brother.

There seems to be no cancer on my Mom's side of the family. She is turning 83 in February and is a stroke survivor.

My father died at age 58 of lung cancer (with bone mets).  Many years later, his older sister died after a recurrance of breast cancer spread to her lungs - she was in her 70's, I believe.  My mom turned 80 in November and puts me to shame with her traveling, cooking, entertaining, care-taking - the little lady never slows down, and her biggest health issue in the last 20 years was cateract surgery!

Leave it to me to be different...My dad did not have any type of cancer and neither did any of his family that I am aware of.

My mom's brother died of leukemia

Hi all, I'm new to the forums. This is very interesting as I was dx last August with ILC at age 36 and am BRCA 1&2-...My father was dx with throat cancer at age 49 he lived in remission until the age of 54 when he passed with complications from a MRSA infection that could not be cleared up. My mother is 60 and has never been dx with any type of cancer, however my maternal grandmother passed away from BC.

My father was dx with lung cancer at 54 and passed away 6 weeks after diagnosis. He was a heavy smoker.  I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer at 62.   There is no history of breast cancer on my mother's side of the family -- my mother passed away a year ago at the age of 87.

I have been told time and again that there is no connection between my father's lung cancer and my breast cancer, but I have seen here other posters whose fathers also had lung cancer.

I was dx with agressive pleomorphic ILC summer of 2009 at the age of 47.  Stage 4 at initial dx, with liver mets, now have brain mets that got worse after wbr last March. Hoping CMF will do the trick- follow-up scans #1 (mri and ct) were promising, trying not to freak over scans #2 at the end of the month.

My father was dx with aggressive prostate cancer in Nov 2010.

His younger sister died from advanced ovarian cancer in her mid 50's which was not found until after she developed glioblastoma multiforme... a separate and unrelated extremely aggressive brain cancer. She lived 3 months after the brain tumor was found.

No history of breast cancer anywhere in my family.  I tested negative for BRCA.

One of my father's uncles died of lung cancer in his early 70's if I remember right, also a smoker...

Interesting article. I was dx with IDC and my sister just got dx with lobular bc. My dad did not have prostrate cancer but he did have lymphoma. My mom had breast cancer in her late 60's and died at 810 So did my dad. Brother had melanoma over 15 years ago and is doing fine. Know very few people who dont have cancer somewhere in their family or extended family. Cant change that. And by the way rakulynda my parents smoked too. Dad smoked a pipe and once in a while cigs but Mom smoked cigs. She quit for 10 years and went back when family crisis developed. When she died she had COPD but was never dx with emphysema or lung cancer. Was glad but surprised given she had chronic bronchitis and coughed a lot. She also was plagued with really bad sinus problems as well. Back then people didnt know what they do now about cancer in general and in particular, lung cancer.
