((((Ducky)))) I know how you feel. New Years is one of my least favorite holidays. I was a bartender for years, granted years ago, but still always worked it and now I hate the pressure to have to "do something". I would have happily had grilled cheese with you, but I would have added tomato soup too. As of 9:15 ALL my boys were asleep, DH and both kids. Happy New Year and I am thinking of you too.
-
Happy New Year! Laurie, that was very well said, I also wish all of us a happy, healthy 2012! I am with you on ushering 2011 out Michelle.
Wow great ideas for pizza and breads. I am going to give them a try, but like you Bedo, I am not much of a baker. I wish I were better.
Just got home from new York about an hour ago. I always wanted to be there for the ball drop, but not any more. I am a city girl, always thought I loved crowds and excitement, but it was so crowded, it was scarey. I was afraid we would get separated and wouldn't be able to find each other again. I know my DD was nervous too. But we had a great time, and it's nice to be home sipping a glass of wine and watching it on tv.
Happy, healthy new year everyone! -
Kay I am watching it on tv too! You couldn't pay me to be there. There were too many people at my neighbors house and dinner got nutty- I didn't eat much. Just had a ham, egg and cheese sandwich
Listening to the snores rattle through the house and Dick Clark's rocking New Years-yet I haven't seen Dick yet- no pun intended- well maybe;P
-
I have to wait until 9 for my DH to pick me up and take me to the casino and thought i would pop in real fast- Laurie- I laughed so hard at your post, your too funny!
There is no parking at the casino so have to wait for DH im getting tired just waiting
Ducky- tomorrow is a new day! Im with you, there is so much hype and woud of been just as happy to stay home! ((((hugs)))))
-
thanks ladies...........I appreciate your thoughts...............this time of the year is always tough..........my husband died from Pancreatic cancer, and we found out about it Christmas day 1988, and on NY's eve 1989, I was sitting on a chair next to him in the ICU of the hospital . He entered the hospital for testing, and they had to put a rod into his liver, to take out the bile, it had consumed his whole body, and it didn't show till xmas morning. He wasn't even sick.................he turned "jaundice" xmas morning.............they kept him in the hospital, and on January 3rd. they did "Whipple surgery" which took 7 hours...........he was in the hospital for 5 weeks, and came home in FEbruary...............
So these holidays are always bittersweet for me.................He died 2 years and 9 months later in 1991..............At least I got a little more time with him............It is hard to believe it is 20 years...............but time and life go on...................
And yes tomorrow is a new day, and a New Year................let's pray that it is a good one for all "cancer" patients....................hugs ladies.
Tomorrow it will be sauerkraut and pork tenderloin with my family at my son's home........and the Philly Mummer's Parade..............doesn't get much better then that................
-
Ducky, sorry about the loss of your DH. I can see how tough the holidays are for you. Enjoy your dinner at your son's.
-
i don't know that we'll have a big dinner, but are having fruit, crepes, berries and whipped cream for brunch.. maybe a quiche too if I get on it.
happy new year ladies.
-
Oh apple, can I come to your house?
-
Sounds delish Apple, I had half of a bagal with orange marmalade, a banana, cup of OJ, and coffee. For supper will be left overs. The rest of the Prime Rib, baked potato and cole slaw. DH will finish his baked stuffed shrimp I made him.
Wishing everyone a Happy Health 2012♥
-
apple crepes sounds yummy have not had them in years and dont really know how to make them. Would you like an adopted daughter...cause you sound like an amazing cook....I am good at the clean-up.LOL
tonight will be ham with scalloped potatos and some kind of veggie.

Hi! What a nice thread ... Today, I cooked with my two sons – 20 and 25 – and my daughter in law. (Or what do you say when they aren't married? Daughter out-law doesn't come out right
... OK, his girlfriend.) I made a thai style soup with coconut milk, red and green peppers, kale, salmon, onions, garlic, ginger, curry, lemon grass, lime and coriander. The kids made a great salad with rucola, cocktail tomatoes, black beans, garlic, feta cheese and a big bowl of guacamole.
It started out with my idea of the soup, but when we were shopping, we found cheap avocados, just enough ripe to eat, and then the kids wanted a salad with guacamole. We couldn't decide, so we made both. I wasn't sure the dishes would match, but they really did!

ducky and Laurie, New Year's Eve is not a big party night for us. In my younger years I did the parties, drank too much and felt awful on New Year's day. Not a good way to start the year, I decided. DH and I had a couple of glasses of wine before dinner, enjoyed our dinner and were in bed by 10:30. The sound of fireworks began before 8 pm. There was undoubtedly a crescendo of racket at midnight, but neither of us heard it despite a window being open in the bedroom and in the adjoining bathroom.
Today is a pretty day. Sunny. Mild enough for open doors and windows. We're watching the Saints and the Patriots on tv. At 4 pm we're invited to the home of friends who live about 3 mi. from our house. Looking forward to some good wine and dinner featuring standing rib roast. It will, unfortunately, be overcooked for my taste, but I'll enjoy it nonetheless.
2011 was good for us. Hoping 2012 was be just as good. Thank you all for your generosity in sharing recipes and cooking ideas.
-
Laurie, I would never have guessed you were a bartender! In my 20's I worked as a cocktail waitress at the Hilton Hotel in Cape Canaveral. It was during the big space launches and I had a ball. All the network journalists stayed at the Hilton so I got to see them and serve them cocktails!
-
Carol- I worked tending bar, waitressing, cooking and managing in resteraunts for years. The bar was always my favorite though. You made the most money, had your regulars and got to have fun mixing cocktails all night. Hope your dinner with friends is great tonight!
Mandalala- Your afternoon of cooking sounds like it was fun! Sometimes the best meals come together in a way we don't plan
-
Mandalala-Welcome
Well, here it is 2012 and i dont feel any different! Well maybe a little im not hung over today like i was last year at this time LOL! I drank unsweetned ice tea at the casino so i was a good girl. Actually the lines were backed up and didnt want to stand in line when i could be parking myself at the slots- Place was packed (too crowded) and smokey! I did win 240 dollars so i was happy about that- Last year someone stole my ticket out of the machine, it was about 30 dollars and the guy showed up one year later they got the money back from him and let my DH know, so i got 30 bucks just walking in the door (sweet)
I have also worked in the restraunt/bar bussiness all my life starting from fast food to 5 star restarunts. I worked at the black orchid for Tom Selleck he was awesome and sweet not to mention so cute back then, My favrotie person i waited on was john wayne who came into my parents restaurant while filming rooster cogburn back in 1975. on the rogue river which runs right behind the restaurant. I have waited on quite a few actors but he was by far the nicest person ever!
May our year be full of good health, love, and prosperity! xoxo
edited to say, and good Food!

Mandalala: Welcome. I'd love to know what to call my 40 year old son's significant other. They have been together for 11 years & that's way past 'girlfriend'. They decided some time ago not to get married since they don't choose to have children. Sigh. I use DIL most of the time since it's too complicated to explain. Anyone else have ideas? Daughter out-law? That should turn some heads.
Debbie6122: Went to see The Decendants this morning. Thought of you while watching the Hawiian scenery. Beautiful. Where did you say you were staying?
Happy New Year everyone. Obligatory Southern black-eyed peas for supper.
-
Minustwo- I have been wanting to see the decendants, i think it was Michelle who saw it and loved it too. We are staying at the Sheraton waikiki. Although i think Daughter out law is cute and funny, but then you still have to explain that too LOL!
Here is what my DH requested for dinner tonight one of mine and his favorties:
Pasta IN A CREAM SAUCE WITH SALMON OR CHICKEN
2 TBS OF EVOO (OLIVE OIL)
2 SHALLOTS- FINELY CHOPPED
2 CLOVES OF GARLIC- FINELY CHOPPED
2 CUPS OF CHICKEN STOCK
1/2 CUPS OF FRESH LEMON JUICE (ABOUT 2 LEMONS)
1 CUP OF DRY WHITE WINE (CHABLIS)
2 TABLESPOONS OF CAPERS
1 TBS OF SALT
1 CUP OF HEAVY CREAM
CHOPPED UP PARSLEY-FOR GARNISH
SAUTE SHALLOTS AND GARLIC IN THE EVOO FOR 3 OF 4 MINUTES, DONT BROWN THE GARLIC- IT WILL TASTE BITTER
STIR IN WINE AND SIMMER FOR 5 MINUTES OR SO, STIR IN STOCK AND LEMON JUICE, AND THE CAPERS, AND BRING TO A BOIL, SEASON WITH
SALT AND PEPPER. THEN SIMMER FOR 15 MINUTES OR SO.
I LIKE TO USE SPAGHETTI OR ANGEL HAIR PASTA, COOK ACCORDING TO PACKAGE ON BOX, DRAIN AND TOSS WITH THE CREAM SAUCE- MAKE EITHER CHICKEN BREAST OR BAKED
SALMON AND CUT INTO CHUNKS AND TOSS WITH PASTA AND SAUCE, GARNISH WITH CHOPPED UP PARSLEY.
IF USING CHICKEN BREAST, I LIGHTLY BROWN IT AND CUT UP IN BITE SIZE PIECES AND FINISH COOKING DURING THE SIMMERING PROCESS.

Hi everyone, and welcome Mandala! We have left our friends in Milton MA and are now at our daughter and SIL's house minding the grandkids, who are actually all in bed now. They were good - my daughter made baked chicken, potato salad and salad fixings so they could make their own salad. They actually ate, for a change. Then I made popcorn and they watched some Pink Panther episodes. Now DH and I are settled down to watch football. I will be in my pj's shortly, I am beyond tired. Last night was the first night that my skin bothered me enough to keep me awake for a while. I'm so glad I'm getting a break until Tuesday. Ugh, my 4-year-old granddaughter saw my chest and asked me about it...how the heck do you explain it to a little kid???
Joyce - Chinese sounds good! Hope it was a good surprise!
-
deboreye, there you are! Did I miss your lovely picture before?
Ducky, I'm sorry that the holidays bring such memories. I want a good 2012 for you.
For all, I've found "Pandora" on my computer, just put it in the search box and then put your favorite artist in and if you want them to suggest others you can put that in too and it will make your own play list Wonderful!
I'm making cioppino tomorrow with a friend. Yum there are so many recipes on the Internet and most have a lot of protein (fish and shellfish) and tomatoes for veggies.
Thanks guys for the bread recipes, I will try to make some to go with it.
For the New Years there were 5 of us sleeping in the same bed! So cozy and full of snuggling.
Before you get any ideas, I'm the official pet sitter of my neighbors, so there was 1 standard poodle one miniature poodle mix, my 2 black cats and me!
Happy New Years everyone! And may it be a good and new one.
Sally
Does anyone have any ideas for my "why is my incision hurting now" post? sorry to change the subject but not many people answered.
-
I was a tree for a while.
Mandala!
-
Anyone have a remedy for muscle back spasms. My God, they make me yelp in pain and they're real quick to come and go. I tried the heating pad which feels good but after a while I'm yelping again.
-
No non-prescription ones except massage
-
Deb- Bio- freeze helps me alot with muscle issues, it's like icey hot cream only better and used by massage therapists. I could have a pinched nerve in my neck and have a migraine from it, take a hot shower put it on and poof- all better. I swear by it.
Michelle- No wonder you are pooped! You don't stop for a second! So glad you are enjoying time with your grandkids but so sorry that the burn is keeping you from sleeping. I hope tonight is better for you and you get some relief on your break till Tuesday. As for what to say to a child, I found to just be straight forward and simple- no big deal. When Tried to hide things from my older son who was 2 1/2 at the time he had issues and fears, playing Dr with his teddy bears, them "going away to God." As soon as I said things matter of fact and told him it was all no big deal he stopped. I know your grandchildren are a little older but I would just tell them what you do, you go in and lay down and get zapped by some magic that makes the cancer go away, sometimes it gives you a sunburn but it will go away. I don'ty know.....hope it helps. This from me, that when I got caught by my son naked with my drains, I panicked! I had one in each hand and he said what are those? I responded I have no idea, I just found them here on the floor? I'm going to throw them away, they are just plastic. DOH!!! Dumb.
-
Laurie - thanks! My daughter told her it was some medicine to make me better, which seemed to satisfy her for the moment. That's a funny story about your drains!
We are going to leave here right after breakfast tomorrow then I'll relax at home and watch the Tournament of Roses parade. We've set it to record in case we don't get out of here early enough. And I won't be doing much for the rest of the week, except I need to visit my mom. And go grocery shopping, and whatever else...LOL! Life just happens!
Deb - Aleve along with Tylenol if you don't have any muscle relaxers. I hope you get some relief soon! Do you happen to have any Valium? That would do the trick, most likely.
-
Mandelala and minus2, I have the same problem with my 74 yo MIL's SO. They have been together for ten years. Boyfriend definitely doesn't cut it. Half of the grand kids (the younger ones) call him pop pop and the older ones call him Arnie.
Chinese food does sound good. I didn't end up making pork and sauerkraut, I guess no luck for me this year! Went over my friends and had appetizers and desserts. Looking forward to trying the beer chicken in the next day or two. Bedo, I am going to look up your post. -
Tonight was Pork and Sauerkraut at my son's........................oh heaven's does his wife make the best I have ever eaten
Guess where i will be spending tomorrow...............................visiting my friend "JOHN".............all day...........hhahahahahahahahahaha, but it was worth it........................and she even sent me home with leftovers........................yum.................
-
Thanx, I just have Advil, so I took 2 advil PM.
((((EVERYBODY))))
-
Michelle- Sorry you are having some pain with your burn. ((((hugs))))) Like Laurie said, you are always on the go how do you do it?
Laurie- Funny story on the drains LOL!
Deb- Hope your back gets better, here is what my DH used to do when he had back pain, he rolled up a towel and layed on the floor with the towel tucked just in the small of the back- He says it works, don't know, never tryed it- But hope you feel better soon.
Bedo- My incision hurt for quite awhile, how long has it been for you? If it looks red, swollen and different i would call your BS just to be safe
Ducky and Kay- you both had pork chops and saurcraut tonight, it sounds good!
-
I am also a former restaurant person and I liked the work. I waitressed, managed and also bartended here and there as well as filled in when cooks didn't show up for work.
Speaking of brushes with celebrity, I once got stiffed by Madonna, the bitch!
