Symptoms of Bone Mets?

Options

Hello Ladies,

I really have not posted in years.  Just wondering what the symptoms of bone mets are (and I guess how you can tell the difference from that or arthritis).  Having alot of pain lately in my left hip (near the groin area) which I never used to have until this year.

Thanks in advance,

-Nancy

I didn't have any symptoms. Now that I know I've got lots of mets all over I really can't tell when it's bone pain or arthritis when I have both in the same area.

i was having pain in my ribs and hip for a few months and then i was always 'pulling' a muscle  somewhere in my body and for sure i thought because its all over that it was just arthritis. i went to my primary dr and told him to test me for everything and the blood test came back with raised tumor markers.. do yourself a favor , have yourself checked out. either way you'll know whats going on

Thanks everyone for your quick replies.  Wouldn't mets show up in your blood work though?  My last appt. was 8/2.  It wouldn't hurt to get checked out and find out what is causing this pain so I have a call into my doctor since my next check-up is either January or February.

Bones mets will only show up on scans.  Mine show on PET scans but I have heard others that have had them show on CT scans.

One of the biggest difference between arthritis and mets is that mets hurt when at rest. The pain is sometimes even worse when at rest (I.e. Sleeping). This is because the muscles around the bone "squeeze" the bone and when relaxed the bone is able to expand and contract causing the pain( (per my orth onc). If the pain wakes you up at night it definitely needs checking.

However, since you're so close to your check up anyway you might want to get it checked now. There's so much that can be said for peace of mind.

BTW my bone mets show on bone scan but not all do.

Thanks Marie - my bone pain definitely wakes me up - and is worse at rest - but so far no uptake on scans or labs - it is always a worry though - I have an MRI tomorrow on my neck and my lower back is a mess too - so of course my mind always goes to mets- Love to all - Elllie

I was told in June I had cancer in the uterus(which was true)...while waiting for a hysterectomy my primary care doc suggested a CT scan - that showed bone mets throughout - from neck to pelvis. (later confirmed in a PET scan and bone biopsy)....no pain then, whatsoever, none yet.  Final diagnosis in late August:  breast cancer that metasasized to uterus, ovaries, and all those bones...so you never know.

    Dear Nancy,

Any unexplained pain that lasts longer than a few weeks should be checked with a scan.  Lab tests (tumor markers) are not reliable for everyone, so you should absolutely ask for a bone scan.  Hope everything goes okay!  My bone mets never caused pain, I was completely suprised.

I agree, see your Onc.  My first symptom was pain which was different than joint pain.  I ended up having a CT scan, bone scan and MRI.  You should see your Onc.

    Best of luck to you!

I have pain in my right shin which spreads down to my ankle at times & it is only when I'm resting (as Reesie suggested could be mets!)...it aches when I go to bed each night as well as when sitting in the evening - much worse in bed though. The question is....would bone mets occur in the lower leg? I've always believed they occurred in the upper half of the body but can't help 'thinking the worst'!

Can't help thinking I'm over reacting but...............

Cut to how much better do I feel on Xgeva than before?  Wow!   Too much better.  Forgetting to be careful!    Edited to emphasize:   possible to get checked (MRI) and catch it early.

Kazzie, does the pain feel like it's in the bone or could it be a nerve or muscle pain? Does it burn?

Racy, it's 'in' my shin, not muscle i don't think..

No, it doesn't burn, more like a dull ache & only there when I'm sitting or lying down - mostly in the evening.....

Kazzie, you could have "shin splints" from over excercising or other reasons.  I have bone mets, but none in my shin.  Yet my right shin hurt on and off for a couple of years due to an exercise injury, even at rest. These are hard to heal once you have them.

It's never a mistake to get a scan if you feel any doubts, though.

Thanks Sandilee...I see the onco in 2 weeks & I will mention it but I'm not sure mets would be that far down - hopefully.....can't help the worrying though:))

Kassie, I had pain in my shin bone (tibia) that started in June. family dr says one week off of it. After one week of icing and staying off of it it did feel better. but the pain was still shooting up the tibia from my ankle, xrays showed nothing wrong, cat scan nothing wrong, so he sent me to a podiatist who in september sent me for a MRI, the report said I had a bone spur on the inside of the tibia in the ankle joint. Well the cortizone shot helped for 2 weeks then the pain was back. PT and more shots the pain worsen, this dr sent me to a foot and ankle surgeon. November the surgeon looked at the MRI and said you dont have a bone spur , you have a divet in the tibia, HUH???? I had surgery 6 weeks ago . He removed the bone spur that had chipped off my tibia, Of course I was sure the cancer is back, but now I figure it is the SE from the arimidex messiing with my bones. it showed on the MRI, after nearly six months of pain I am almost able to walk without pain, we have to speak up to the dr , we know our bodies  better then them.

Off to the orthopedist for ungodly lower back pain, radiating in my hip and leg - and something seriously wrong with my neck - results of MRI today. Seems sad to be posting a whoo-hoo in one breath for 6 years out and total panic and fear for a recurrence today - Could degenerating discs come from chemo and radiation and AI's? Sometimes I feel like blaming everything on tx - lots of love and positive thoughts for you all.............., Ellie

Have been having neck pain since new years eve.  I was in a rear end collision about 10 years ago on the highway and have suffered from neck and shoulder pain every since.  I am wondering if this neck pain is being brought on by tamoxofin?  At first when I touched my neck bone or vertebra it was tender, now I just have muscle aches that radiate to my shoulder (not side of bc but opposite).  It scares me that some of you had no symptoms of bone mets.  I see my onc on the 20th and am thinking of asking him for a ct of body. Supposed to get reconx done next month. Also had a neck and chest xray back in October both were clear save for some degeneration of my neck.  Guess I am dissinegrating.....

    Kassie,

I have heard it is rare to have BC bone mets from the knees down. Not impossible, but not common. But having won the breast cancer lottery we all worry we are likely to get the rare condition :(

Good luck and get it checked out.

I could feel the pressure at my lower tibia while i exercise. Is it bone met? I am meeting my MO at the end of may....I'll bring it up. But just want to ask if it sounds familiar....

I had recurring discomfort around my middle rib area that would at times be in the front rib area, at times in the back rib area.  I attributed it to a pulled muscle that I got after getting up from a massage table (I know- so not right!) After a while I mentioned it to my primary care doc who said, yes, a pulled muscle can do that. Since I was in the Tailorx trial I saw my MO regularly  and my tumor markers were always good even with the rib discomfort. (I never mentioned it to my MO.) I saw my MO in Nov. 2013 and then after that a lump appeared on the chest wall.  That came back positive for a recurrance and fast forward.... after a PET can "just to be sure" I was diagnosed with a bone met to rib in April.

    So... lesson learned. Mention everything.

    Wishing you good luck,

    Lisa

Hi Ladies, I was dx in June 2012 with stage 11A invasive breast cancer. In July I had a bilateral mastectomy and one lymph node came back positive for malignancy. I unfortunately ended up having my white blood count drop so low after chemo that I ended up in the Providence Cancer Tower here in Portland for 11days after each treatment. They told me in the ER the first time i came that if I had waited 12 more hours to come in, that they might not have been able to save me from the nuetrapenia. Unfortunately we had to stop the chemo when it became apparent that the treatment itself was starting to kill me. Anyway I will be 6 years out in June (Thank the Lord) but I have a host of other health issues. I won’t bore you with those. I have had severe lower back pain and have a problem with my L4 & L5. My worry is that I have fallen twice in the last four months, I have severe arthritis in my left knee but for the last few months my hips and upper left leg have just ached. It is much worse at night and sometimes keeps me from sleeping. I am suddenly having small little bouts of incontenance. My primary ordered an X-ray on my left knee and it came back with severe arthritis and 2 new lesions on the bone “that most likely represent ganglion cysts”. That is how it was stated on the report. I don’t know if I am just being paranoid but would all of this be concerning to any of you? Could these new lesions on the bone on the X-ray be something like bone Mets? I sure would appreciate any thoughts you might have. I’m new and this is my first time posting. But I am happy to meet you all

Hi StaceyE and welcome to BCO. Your aches and pains can be associated with arthritis but the only way to tell for sure is to ask your doc about having a bone scan to rule mets either in or out.  This way your mind will have peace and you will be able to just get on with life.

Unfortunately, falling twice in the last few months is not a good thing and you may well have done more harm to yourself than you think and may be masked by your other problems.......do you think this is a possibility?  I think I would be asking for more from your doc as he/she doesn't seem to be addressing your thoughts on this matter.

Just for your information, this is a very old thread and has been inactive for quite some time.......sometimes, it's better to start a new one with your question in the heading.  Having a new thread will give you more opportunity for more answers.  You can tell the age of a thread by looking at the date on the last post.

    Hope this helps a little.

    Love n hugs.   Chrissy

I agree that a bone scan would be a good idea if you are having ongoing pain. Call your MOnand discuss your pain
