So...whats for dinner?
Comments
-
Apple- I hope he takes you out! AND you get to choose where you go.
Stockings- when we got older we started a new tradition amongst my brother, DH, Dad, Mom and I. We each buy each other two stocking stuffers so no one fills any one stocking and we have to guess who gave each other what. It's interesting. DH and I do the boys stockings.
So, change of dinner plans. Ds #1 tackled and head butted DS#2 in the face and split his top lip open. So homemade chicken tenders in hopes that DS#2 will eat despite a split and bloody lip. I tell you never a dull moment.
-
Kay- You have had quite a day, Hope your blood work and test came out better this time.Hope your cousin is ok too!
Apple- I never like my hair when i first cut it until about a week or two later too. Enjoy your dinner tonight. and hope you get your energy back soon.
Minustwo-I love flavored chipolte sauces, will have to give bronco bob a try.
-
I'm home from rads and dinner, not too much traffic tonight. We might get a little snow tonight and/or tomorrow morning. Hopefully it will be gone by tomorrow afternoon. I'm looking forward to the 3 days off!
Kay - what a day!!! It sounds like your LE is vastly improved, that's a good thing!
Apple - I'm with you on bbq. It's ok in small doses if the food is not too smoky. Otherwise, I can pretty much do without it. You could tell DH that you are staying home, he can go get his bbq then do curbside pickup at your favorite restaurant. That way you could enjoy some rest and restaurant food of your choice.
Ok, no complaining about haircuts. Some of us would kill to have enough hair to cut...LOL!
-
Busy thread! You don't dare miss a day or two! I love beets, especially the fresh ones. They're delicious. Boil them until they're tender. Cool and peel. Slice and sprinkle with a good vinaigrette or other home-made dressing of your choice.
DH baked his oatmeal chocolate chip cookies today. Dozens of them. When I got home around 3:30 he was packing up the gift containers. I sat down and ate three of them, and they are not a dainty size. They're man-sized cookies. Now we have to deliver tins of cookies to the neighbors.
I don't get "involved" in Christmas except for funding Santa Claus. Today I gave my niece a couple of hundred dollars to buy presents for two kids I've never met. DH and I don't buy gifts for each other any more. When you reach a certain age, 68 and 72 in our case, you've already exhausted your interest in surprise presents. We each buy whatever we want that we can afford throughout the year. Our only indoor Christmas decoration is a comical reindeer card holder with a few ornaments hung on him in addition to the Christmas cards I'll try to post a picture. Upstairs in the attic is an expensive artificial Christmas tree that I meant to put out on the curb this year but we never got around to it.
We do have a lighted wreath outside. It looks quite festive in the darkness. DH has it on a timer.
On Christmas day most of my family will gather at my younger sister's house and we'll have a wonderful meal and enjoy one another's company for a few hours.
Hard to believe that 2011 is almost over, but it has been a good year for DH and me.
-
Kay- Sorry I missed you earlier! Yay to new sleeves for the LE so you don't have to keep wrapping. And hugs to you on starting herceptin again
I'm sorry to anyone who I miss when I post, the thread is so busy and I find myself reading and then getting pulled away from the computer and then I go back again and miss people when I post
Then I see someone else comment and I realize I left someone out!
-
Oh, Kay, long day!
Hurray for the sleeves! I'm sorry about your cousin, I hope they are doing OK. Can you be a Santa to them?
We seem to be up to #10 or 11 going to the Unitarian Church Christmas Eve services together now which is so nice.
-
Michelle- LOL at the hair (sorry) It is growing in nicely though and you look beautiful!
Carol- Sounds like my house i only have my kitchen bay window decorated but only because i dont want my neighbors to think im a scrooge, there homes all look georgous on this block, i do have a beautiful reef on my inside door that is huge but that is about it.
Laurie-The threads have been pretty busy lately so it is hard to keep up.
Bedo- I may go to a christams eve mass if my friend is able to go, last time i went my DH and i went with 4 other couples, i told them i needed a joint to come down after that LOL! I dont go often but when i do it puts me on ahigh!
-
Just got back from a boat trip on Nick's boat, it is too cool to swim all though the water is so beautiful. Beautiful fish also, we went out to the Vixon which is a ship wreck a few miles out and through bread overboard and these huge white fish came up and out of the water to eat it. We stopped at an Island that Nick's cousin owns and tied up the boat to have lunch it was sooo nice and serene. I posted the spiney lobster tail I had on FB at the Lobster Pot in Hamilton. It is alot milder than Maine lobster. But still delish.
Hugs to all!!
did ya see my drawing in the sand on Horseshoe Bay!
-
wow- now it's so quiet here! I think we are all cooking and getting ready for Christmas!
Deb- your day sounds wonderful!! So glad you are getting to enjoy the warmer weather and time with your family on top of it all!
Debbie- I don't decorate a whole lot either. Candles in the windows and a few thing inside here and there. DH wants to put lights on the bushes but I say no. They would be there year round, I just know it.
Today was another whirl wind. Dropped the boys at my in laws at 8:30 finished Christmas shopping, went too PT, got my hair cut, came home and have been baking and wrapping all afternoon. I am going to cook my pulled pork tonight overnight so I won't have to think about it tomorrow. Once the boys go to bed I am just going to wrap, wrap, wrap.
I grabbed a take and bake pizza from the grocery store that we are going to have tonight. After baking all afternoon I do not feel like cooking. Glad I know myself well enough that I planned on it!!
Why is nothing baked at the same temp? I had to do each thing one at a time which is kind of annoying. Banana bread, brownies, beer bread, quiche and chocolate chip cookies. All different temps? Another reason why I hate baking.
-
Home from rads #18 and now I have 3 days off for my skin to recover a bit. The traffic was a non-issue today, although DH and I went to lunch in the North End then went to our favorite pastry shop and waited for almost 45 minutes to get desserts for tomorrow night. The place was crazy busy! And the rad center was running 45 minutes behind, so I had to wait a bit, but no big deal. We weren't going anywhere...lol!
Deb - I saw your pictures, beautiful! And your message to us!!! It looks and sounds like you are having a fabulous time!
Laurie - what a busy day you had! I hope you have time to relax a bit over the next few days.
Debbie - I didn't decorate outside either. We just took a drive around the lake to see what the "neighbors" did, and it was surprisingly dark. I expected more people would have had decorations up, but I guess not.
My DD called us and told us that my granddaughter has strep...my SIL had it at the beginning of the week, plus they've both had ear infections. We are spending the night tomorrow night so it will be a miracle if I don't get sick! Wild horses wouldn't keep me from being there Christmas morning, so I guess we'll all just have to wash our hands, and I will make sure I don't eat or drink anything that she has touched. These kids are sick ALL the time!
We are having chili in a few minutes. DH is watching another version of A Christmas Carol, his favorite movie and it doesn't matter which version.
-
I am having a wonderful time, DD will be posting more pics on FB cause my camera got wet when a wave and splashed on it, I thing it's ruined but was able to download the pics.
-
Did you see what I wrote in the sand? That is after I got my camera wet.
-
Deb - I saw it!
-
Deborye, your trip sounds absolutely wonderful! It sounds like you are asking up enough sunshine to hold you through the winter.
Michelle, glad you got through another tx. It's lucky traffic wasn't bad, it was horrific here today. Good luck not getting sick. I don't blame you for risking it, I wouldn't miss it either.
Laurie, that sure was a lot of baking! I am sure it will all be delicious and worth it tomorrow. Don't worry about commenting to me every time I write something. That is completely unnecessary. I would not be hurt or offended.
Went to the beer store and the liquor store today. I am sure those of you not familiar with PA are wondering about that. The state owns and controls all the liquor stores, and that is the only place you can buy wine or liquor here. Then there are beer distributors which is the only place you can buy beer (other than some restaurants that sell take out beer). It is very strange to people who aren't familiar with it. They were both crowded. Also stopped at the mall and finished up shopping. And went to the supermarket. Got some steamed shrimp, cheese and crackers, hummus and salsa and chips and pretzels and some other stuff. Just finished making meatballs. My mother, brother and sisters and niece and their families are coming over tomorrow. Also going to make some chicken in a spicy tomato sauce. I am keeping it as simple and easy as possible. Going to my sister's on Christmas for a Christmas dinner. And my son's plane is supposed to be getting in at 11:30 tonight. I am quite tired. I think I will sleep good tonight. I still have to wrap presents tomorrow. I can't believe how much I rocrastinated.
Merry Christmas everyone! -
Hi all! I don't post much but check in often. Very much enjoy the recipes and fun stories that are shared. Also send up prayers and wishes always.
I wanted to post that I made an enchilada casserole that was posted a little while back. It was very yummy! Everyone enjoyed it and was given the thumbs up. Christmas dinner will be prime rib at grandma and grandpa's house. I am in charge of a "festive" jello LOL. Lime jello with halved pears and a marashino cherry in the center of the pear. Adding fruit or anything to jello automatically yucks my kids out. But, it does look pretty
Tonight will be an unhealthy dinner at the Squeeze Inn. It is a burger place that my husband loves. He heard about it on the tv show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Guy Fieri said it was one of two of his favorite alltime burger places. Of course when my husband heard that he had to see for himself! Yup, he's impressed.
The kids are with their sweethearts so it is a date night for DH and I.
I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and happy holiday. I wish nothing but goodness for us all.
Lexi

Lexi- too cute, date night and the squeeze in cant get anybetter than that LOL! Welcome!
Kay- I think it was th same way in ky here you can buy beer, wine, and hard liquor all in the same place.( keeps the drunks focused) LOL!
deb- Love the pics on FB so glad you are having a great time and in the hot sun! love the bc sisters in the sand !!!
Michelle- I understand what you are saying about wanting to be with your beautiful grandchildren and family during the holidays but please be careful we dont need our michelle sick!
Laurie- I wish i had 2 ovens in my kitchen i have the same problems with temp and baking seperate things at the same time- sometimes i just put what ever will fit in the oven and hope for the best, unless of course its pies or pastries
We got home tonight after going out Dh says can you make me a snack, so im in the kitchen at 1100 at night and he says, honey, what time are we having dinner on sunday? I say well as soon as we get back from the communtity center around 5 why? He says, i invited my boss and his daughter ( he just went through a divorce) for christmas dinner. I said excuse me i thougth i heard you say you invited your boss for dinner? I wanted to strangle him right then and there, All i could say was "Are you nuts" So basically if he accepts ( he told DH he would let him know sat night) i have company that i was not prepared for let alone his freaking boss, Are you kidding me right now! Im stressed just thinking about it, i dont mind having him but just not less than 24 hrs in advance, now on top of cooking my brains out i have to clean the house a lot better and buy more food as i was making so much less this time. I know it will be ok and i will get through it but still...
Every one have a merry christmas and a safe and happy new year, I love you all!
Dont forget grandma got run over by a reindeer on christmas eve, so all you grandmas better Careful! LOL!
-
Ooohh Debbie - that's quite a surprise your husband gave you! But I'm sure the boss and daughter will be happy to be having Christmas with friends, so try not to stress too much. Like you said, it will be fine.
Today will be a busy one as we get the rest of the packages wrapped and stuffed into the car. I wonder if they will all fit! Then it will be non-stop family, fun and food until we come home tomorrow night.
I want to wish each of you a very Merry Christmas. You have all been so wonderful to me, offering support, love and hugs as I have traveled this challenging road in 2011. And I will be forever grateful to BCO for bringing me a sister...Joycek! What better gift could anyone hope for?
Love and hugs to everyone,
Michelle
-
Merry Christmas to you all! All of you and good health are my Best Christmas presents this year. I would not have gotten through this year without BCO and all the great friends I have met here.
Onward to a better 2012!
-
Remind me not to post after drinking lol
-

-

-
Debbie! That is quite the surprise guest! But I am sure he will will be grateful for being included, you never know maybe his ex wife was a slob and he will think your house is immaculate without even having to do any extra cleaning!
Merry Christmas everyone! I am also so thankful for finding all of you and for BCO. Thank you for all of your support and love. Like Carrie said on to a wonderful and healthy 2012!! I hope everyone has a blast today and tomorrow and that Santa is good to all of you!! xxoo
-
i have a super stressful day today... playing a huge service at 4 (my last because I am quitting) so in an attempt to be stressfree... I'm sticking a chuck roast and some bones in the slowcooker and will deal with it when i come home.. it'll probably end up being stew, if my kid puts the vegetables in. (small potatoes, carrots, onions, celery and some other stuff).
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of you.
-
Will be so glad to get my taste buds back! Right now everything tastes like fried cardboard, baked cardboard, sauteed cardboard, mashed cardboard, boiled cardboard, roasted cardboard, frozen cardboard, scrambled cardboard, creamed cardboard, braised cardboard, blanched cardboard, poached cardboard, or steamed cardboard! I've had cardboard dip, cardboard casseroles, cardboard pizza, cardboard shakes, cardboard fries, cardboard paninis, cardboard grilled cheeses, cardboard oatmeal, cardboard toast, & the list goes on!
-
I made clam chowder last night for tonight's Italian feast of the 7 fishes (although we'll probably only have 5). I wrapped the last of the gifts this morning. Just finished frosting the umteenth italian cookie. Made pie crust from scratch using lard - my mother's recipe, except I took the easy way out and made it in the food processor instead of using a pastry blender. Now on to the apple pie for tonight's dessert and chocolate cream pie for tomorrow and cinnamon rolls with the leftover pie crust for DB #2.. Then make up the cookie trays. Pack a bag and load the car to spend the night with Dad. Back home tomorrow to pack the car and spend the day at DB #3, where 4 generations will gather.
Frankly, I'm looking forward to Monday when I can spend the day in my pajamas eating leftovers.
Merry Christmas, everyone. Enjoy your time with family and friends.
-
Today I have to pick up a few last minute items for tomorrow's dinner, things like punch makings, paper cups. We are expecting 125 to 150 people. We are serving turkey, ham and all the trimmings. Since 1995 the Senior Center has been doing holiday dinners for those in the community be they singles, couples or families that would otherwise be alone that day. A friend and I started the whole thing and every year I've been in charge of it. For the last 8 or 9 years Santa has come on Christmas Day to distribute gifts to everyone.
Christmas will be a little easier than Thanksgiving was. We did Thanksgiving on our own but for Christmas we have help from four of the local churches. Even so I will be one tired puppy tomorrow evening!
Have a Merry Christmas everyone.

Hauntie, last Christmas a BCO friend on another thread was cooking the Italian feast for her family. I had never heard of it and was very interested in her explanation of her menu. It sounded like a lot of cooking and preparation. I hope you are able to relax and enjoy your family gatherings.
I made a shrimp mold this morning for tomorrow and also put together a creamed spinach/artichoke heart casserole. Tomorrow morning I'll make yeast rolls and a macaroni and cheese casserole. DH and I will pack up the food and go to my younger sister's house before noon. We'll probably have 17 people for dinner, 4 children and 13 adults.
I ordered a book from Amazon that was recommended in Cooking Light magazine by the male editor. It arrived a couple of days ago and I've been reading it. The Italian Baker by Carol Field, published in 1985. She spent two years doing research in Italy, visiting bakers, etc. The book has recipes for peasant and artisan breads as well as cookies and dessert baking. I plan to try my hand at some of the peasant breads. I bought a good used book so it wasn't nearly as expensive as the original $35 price. My hangup is that I try to avoid white breads and some of the breads are made with white flour.
I made a good dish last night with turkey thighs. I saw the dish cooked on Everyday Foods tv program on pbs. The ingredients are 2 turkey thighs; 2 lg. shallots, thinly sliced; 4 granny smith apples, peeled and diced; 2 cups apple cider; 1 cup chicken broth, and 2 tsp. of apple cider vinegar at the last minute before serving. You brown the turkey thighs in a dutch oven with a T. olive oil. Remove thighs and cook sliced shallots 5 min. Add apple and cook 5 min. Return thighs to pot, add apple cider and chicken broth. Bring to boil. Cover and cook 1 1/2 hrs in 350 degree oven. Remove lid and cook for additional 30 min. Remove cooked thighs and slice. Add the 2 tsp cider vinegar to the apple sauce mixture. I normally don't like apple sauce because it's so bland but this sauce has a delicious taste.
Like others I have really enjoyed this group of women with our common interest in food and supportiveness for those coping with treatment. I wish us all a joyful Christmas day.
-
I read my post from last night and realized i didnt make any sense, i had been drinking, I shouldnt let emotional stuff get me upset enough to drink that much. remind me not to do that again LOL!
Good news though. Chucks boss said he decided to stay home, Im so glad im just not up to doing a bunch of extra stuff today. (headache) LOL!
Merry christmas everyone xox
