swimming poofy

I wanted to bump this since it is summer time. I made some poofies and they looked a little crazy. I made them too big it seems. so I made them smaller and less tight; a little looser and they worked great. Used them for the first time yesterday at our pool club. I have a halter style swim top I got from Lands End last year. I had Nordstrom sew in pockets. It worked great. The top is high enough in the middle not to gap too much and the halter allows for adjustment.
Haven't done laps yet so we'll see how that works. May have to get a higher top for that.
So the poofs drained well and feel light. My suit has a substantial fabric (not super thin like racing suits) and I think that works well for not showing lumps and bumps.

So glad they worked well for you.. i have even just stitched it right into the cup without a pocket... my grand daughter was at camp and they opened the pool a week early... a quick run for a new suit and a matching poofy... and in a few minutes ready for the water...
once again thanks Alaska Deb

I tried to make poofies like this and they kept turning out too hard and too large, so I sewed pockets into the suits I wanted to put poofies in and I took an unrolled shower poofy and just kept scrunching and stuffing into the pocket until I had what seemed to be the right size and cut the poofy at that point. Then I pulled the poofy out and did a somewhat neater job of rolling it up and put it back in (did that to both sides) and it works great. I did that to three suits that all had nice, smoothly formed cups which conceals any lumpiness and bumpiness from my sad attempt...hey but whatever works.

River rat - great idea.
MB- thanks for starting this post originally and for putting the photo instructions together. They helped a lot.
And yes, Alaska Deb, thank you. You are missed.

purplemb...thank you for bumping this thread and the wonderful idea... I had my umx 6 weeks ago today. I will get some poofies and try to figure this out...but I must say that I share the confusion that Binney and Starzhere had... I will try to figure it out, because I am definitely a swimmer.
I swim laps. Do you think I will need to sew in a pocket behind it to avoid a lot of abrasion or just have it against my skin?
Thanks...

I am not clever enough to make this poofy thing. I ended up buying an Amoena swim form. I also bought some mastectomy swim bras (they look kind of like a sports bra) and I wear them under my regular swim suits instead of mastectomy suit. Yes, the swim bra shows, but it is black and it looks fine. Here is what I bought:

Sorry for the delay.. No more dial up.. Whooo hooo.. If you get the nice poofy they are really soft, no need for the extra sewing. Its all about making similar to a form, the water runs right out. I even in a pinch bought a rough one, but un_poofied it wasn't too bad. This was an inexpensive and lightweight alternative to a swim form
good luck -
Thanks for the pics. I was going to make some last year and wasn't exactly sure how to make them. I ended up doing reconstruction, the poofs would have been cheaper! NJ

Thanks again, purplemb! Have a happy holiday!

Mine don't look as good as yours but will try them in one of my suits for this holiday. Thanks

Mumayan,
my first attempts were shall I say.lumpy. But I have been doing them for far longer than I'd like. Luckily swim suits usually have padding . Enjoy the freedom to be in the water.

... bumping, 'cause there have been questions about using bath scrunchies for swimwear on another thread.

This worked great...love that I don't have to run out and buy a new suit, especially with all the medical expenses in the past months. Thanks for sharing!

I actually thought about this thread last week, while we were staying in a motel that had a nice pool. Didn't have my swimsuit along, though; and my flesh-tone (just in case) bath poofies were at home too. Gotta get to work on one of these, for summer!

Help! I tried making the swim poofys this past weekend...with no luck. Well, I got them made, but they didn't work in the suit I had. (I tried making several different sizes.) There was a gap between the suit and me, so you could see the poofy. What type of suit top are you using these in? My top was the halter type. The short time that I had them in the suit they felt very hard and uncomfortable. ( I am very sensitive as I have regained all sensation plus some on the UMX side.) What am I doing wrong? I ended up using the poofy net to make a pocket for a silicon form and tacked the net pocket in the suit top. It wasn't great, but it worked for this past weekend. Need to figure out something better though. Any ideas, or help would be greatly appreciated!

? any ideas on the post above?
-
FLwarrior, I couldn't get them made right either. They were too dense and uncomfortable. So I just loosely rolled and stuffed some of the poofy into the pockets. It works in suits that have a thicker cup area, I don't think it would work with suits with just a thin lining rather than a cup.
-
FL warrior. Sorry, I've been off for awhile. I do pick suits with the padded cups. My new suit from w this year had removeable pads, so there was already a pocket. Also so sorry you are having so much trouble, maybe some type of soft cover after it was stitched in your suit. It's like all other mastectomy solutions, I hope you can find something that works for you. Take care and be strong

I finally got the OK to do water aerobics 8 weeks post mastectomy. I tried making this and it worked great. When I sewed it into my bathing suit I sewed it in wrong position. When I took the stitches out, the foofy kind of fell apart. I had to roll it back together. Now it is pinned and ready to tack in again. I wanted to do this cheaply because I'm finished with the expansion injections and waiting for reconstruction. I want to exercise as much as possible before surgery-(not easy with my work schedule).
-
I was thinking of trying my drain pouches that came with my camisole to hold the poofy in a suit. They're free, and could be pinned in place. And I don't need them now.

Thanks for the idea, purplemb! I want to take Aquasize in the fall and, what to do about a bathing suit? (It's been 1 1/2 years since my left side mast.) I was looking into Google for a place that would sell mast swimsuits in my area when I came across this thread. I have a swimsuit - V neck - not appropriate! But I took my Genie bra in an appropriate colour, stuffed the poofy into the pocket between the foam shield and the lining and put it on under the bathing suit. It doesn't look bad. The poofy is slightly too large because I am small busted (34B/36A) but, on the upside, it bulges on the inside of my bathing suit and fills in the hollow so, if I bend over, you can't see anything. Considering that the chlorine in the water of the pool damages a swimsuit very rapidly, I have saved myself quite a bit of money using what I have on hand. Now, with the ideas from this thread in mind, I am going shopping for a swimsuit on sale. Thanks again to you, purplemb, and to the others who have contributed their ideas.

I am so glad this thread can help. During the hot months I sometimes use the poofy because its much cooler.
Enjoy the water -
Bumping for swimsuit season.

Someone mentioned that the poof was bumpy. Remember to take apart the poofs and roll it as described. Don't just shove a poofy in there. LOL. The shape is much closer to a real boob if you take the time to do it right. Good luck and enjoy swimming.

I went yesterday to Nordstrom to be "re"fitted - time for my new bras and I wanted to ask about forms that would be more comfortable for my yoga classes. I'm going to start some aqua fitness classes, too, and the fitter showed me the Amoena swim forms. Welllllll.... I knew about the poofy instructions and I decided that at a couple of bucks for shower poofs vs. my out of pocket at about maybe $200 for the forms, I'd give that a pass. I'm swimsuit shopping now (I tossed out my suits after my surgery 2 years ago and haven't been swimming since). I'm not crafty either but I'm kind of excited about making this work!
-
this is the swimsuit top I'm looking at. I will have it pocketed.
