Breast Cysts = High Risk ?

I visited the doctor a few days ago and she sent me to have a diagnostic ultrasound for what appears to be a large  cyst I have in my left breast. The DR said that it was genetic since my mom, sister, my aunt and I all have or have had breast cysts in the past. My question is are breast cysts linked to cancer? Does having breast cysts put you at higher risk for developing cancer in the future? The reason I ask is cause my aunt who had cysts in the past was just diagnosed with Breast Cancer at 49. We have no previous family history of cancer. I was wondering if the cysts are an indication of genetic breast cancer? Should I be worried? Any advice is appreciated!

Fibrocystic breast disease is extremely common and most cysts are generally benign. As far as I know, having breasts cysts has no correlation to genetic breast cancer (BRCA 1 or 2) and I don't think it puts you at any higher risk in general for bc either. (If I'm wrong, I will stand corrected). Praying you get good benign results soon.

Having lots of cysts or "busy" breasts can make test results more difficult to read but I don't think it puts you a higher risk for breast cancer.  Just make sure your have your testing done at a center that has dedicated radiologists that specialize in breast care.  Not all radiologist are equal and some only occassional read breast films.
