How long did it take you to get mri results?
I know it hasn't been that long.... last Tues (late afternoon) but when it's you it seems like forever. The tech told me it could be 5-10 days. I am a mess of anxiety. If it takes that long surely it's benign news....but why make someone wait that long? I don't think I've ever been this anxious about test results before. I know stats are on my side but once you've been on the opposite side I guess it's hard to keep perspective. Just wondering what other people's wait time has been on mri's.

If it's any consolation, it was the quickness of getting my results that had my anxiety spinning into out and out fear...
I went for my MRI on a late Weds morning, and was told I would get my results in 24 hours.
Within an *hour* from when I got home, I got a phone call saying that there was a new finding and that they were sending me to a breast surgeon for a biopsy.
I F*R*E*A*K*E*D out---
But it all came back B9, so even then, with the swiftness, wasnt a sign of it being malignant.
Hoping your results come back sooner than later and you are given the *All is A-OK!*
-
I got results the next day. Wow, 5-10 days does seem excessive! Waiting is hell.
Best wishes for B9 results!
-
I had the results of my initial breast MRI the next day. Ditto for follow-up, pre-treatment plan diagnostic full MRI and a follow-up to that one on my liver.
All my pre-treatment testing and a surgical biopsy, except for that initial breast MRI, were done over two days in a hospital (I was admitted to the hospital for insurance reasons, but it also made the whole process easier and faster). My doctor came by each morning and afternoon/evening with whatever test results had come back from the various labs.
-
mom3, I think you should call Monday and see what the hold-up is about. (And I think I'd find a new place for my future tests!)
-
Wow, you all heard so fast. The first time I had an mri I heard results the next day. This time they gave me such a long wait time. They said they were backed up because everyone was trying to get in their mri's before the end of the year.
cycle-path - I have been thinking of going elsewhere. I truly love my surgeon but it's a large practice and I totally feel 'lost' in there. If this turns out to be nothing I'm wondering if I can just skip going altogether. Couldn't I find a Gyn and use them? Forgot- I got your pm....and thanks for the info. I've been so distracted with this other stuff!
-
I had my MRI at 8am - by noon my doc had my results. Five to ten days does seem really long.
-
I have yearly MRIs---I usually get results in 3 to 5 days.

I recentl;y had a brain MRI at 2:30, and my onc rang me at 5:00 with the results ( in Australia)
Waiting is awful
Good luck

mom3band1g, sorry it's taking them so long to get that report to you. It really depends on the facility. The "results" are available immediately, but it sometimes takes awhile for a radiologist to look at the images and interpret them. Then, depending on the facility, you might have to wait some more until the radiologist can get the report to the doctor who ordererd the MRI and he or she can contact you.
Fortunately, the policy at the place where I'm being treated is that the radiologist communicates the results to the patient, no matter who ordered the test. I've had 2 contrast breast MRI's, and each time I got the results within a few hours (literally).
My first MRI was done around 8:30 in the morning. My BS had also ordered a U/S of my armpit to make sure my nodes weren't enlarged (which would have ruled out SNB at my upcoming surgery). The U/S was scheduled for 10:30 that same morning, and when the radiologist walked in, she said she had already read my breast MRI and there were no other abnormalities besides the tumor we already knew about.
My second MRI was done a year ago, for screening purposes because the tissue in my remaining breast is (still) dense and mammograms don't show anything but snow. That one was scheduled for around 2:30 p.m. Afterward, they told me to go up to the mammography center where a radiologist would give me the results as soon as the images had been interpreted. The mammography center was running really late, so at 4:15 the tech suggested I just go home and someone would call me first thing the next morning. At 7:30 that same evening, I got a call from a radiologist who was "happy" to tell me they had found nothing abnormal on the MRI. "We figured you might like to hear the news right away, instead of having to wait until tomorrow," she said.
Those are good people who work in the radiology section of the hospital/cancer center where I've been treated. I wish everybody was so fortunate.

I got my results last week within an hour of leaving the facility (my MRI was routine and results were normal). I agree with other posters that your wait time is way too long. Good luck.
-
I also had all my test back with a day or two with the exception of my biopsy which took almost 2 weeks. I wonder if your hospital is Outsourcing there test? That could be one reason for the delay. Like some one else mentioned i would def call Monday and see if they are back.
-
Thanks so much ladies! I know they don't outsource their tests. I am going to call today. I cringe at the thought. Their office is a nightmare to call. I'll have to leave a message and they won't return my call. That's how they roll. I'm thinking of having my GP call.... they might return her call. Like I said, I love my surgeon but HATE her office. If I switch Dr's for follow-up care should I just find another bs? I hate this.
-
Can you call the hospital and tell them you want your report also sent to your GP? I always do this, and he will generally get back to me as soon as he gets them
D -
that same day.
-
Mom3, your doc would probably be interested to know that you love her but hate her office. A few years ago I told a doctor about some problems I had in her office and she was VERY interested. And the problems were fixed immediately!
-
dsj- I didn't have it done in a hospital. My bs office is kind of a one-stop shop. They have their own mammography, ultrasound and mri machines. You do get your mammo and ultrasound results before you leave. Of course not the mri! I called and left a message this morning and also called my GP to ask her to call. I can pretty much count on not getting a call back. sigh. Maybe I'll take up recreational drugs to help with my anxiety. only half kidding.
-
mom3band1g,
Is there any reason you can't call your surgeons office, request they make a copy of your MRI report and asked what would be a convenient time for you to pick it up? My last screening MRI I picked up the report either the day or the test or the next day. I called my surgeon to move up our appointment because the results came back BIRAD4 (very suspicious enhancement, recommend a biopsy). I got her first available opening and she arranged for the biopsy. A day or two later she left on her vacation. If I hadn't gotten in for an earlier appointment I would have had to wait for her return to move to the biopsy.
Remember no body cares as much about your body as you do and all these wonderful medical people work for you. Good luck.

This is exactly what ativan or other anti-anxiety meds are for. If you have some, take one. If you don't have some, call your GP. A tiny dose of ativan just takes the edge off. You should not have to be put through this. It's barbaric.
-
There's always the technique of camping out in the doc's office. Get a good book and maybe a little cooler full of refreshments, and let them know you're not leaving until you get your results.
-
mom3b&1g, If I remember correctly we have the same surgeon, J. A., she is wonderful and I agree, her office staff is hard to navigate. I can't remember the ladies name but I finally did find someone who was efficient there. She was assigned to only Dr A's patients, maybe in patient records?? I can't remember, but it wasn't her nurse. I too wish her staff were as great as she is. I actually live 2 hours from there and had a mri today, I've had a constant headache for 3 weeks now so the onco ordered a brain mri. I had it at the local hospital here and as I was leaving the guy who did it said "see you next time". What the heck does that mean? I said I sure hope not. So now I'm right there with you, waiting, and worried. I don't think that people in the medical field know what we're feeling or they wouldn't make us wait forever and make us wonder why I will be seeing him next time, unless of course he saw brain mets. ugh.
-
Susie- yes, we did use the same surgeon. It's so frustrating. I couldn't even get in to see her with this new lump...nothing sooner than 6 months! I had to see one of the radialogist. I really hope your mri does NOT show mets. A constant headache can't be fun either. I have migraines and can empathize about headaches! I guess we'll wait together.
As I predicted no one returned my call. dsj- I actually thought about just showing up. I do live about 45 min away and don't really want to spend my last day of freedom (kids in school) in the Dr office! My Aunt uses the same practice and she does just 'pop' in when she has a question.
I just don't want to go through Christmas still wondering. I'm now thinking if it's anything bad they would have called me by now....so it really must be scar tissue.
cycle-path - I did think of calling my GP for something to help with anxiety but the truth is I am scared to take anything. I really don't like pills. I'd make a terrible drug addict!
thanks ladies for all your support .
-
Susie- Hope everything comes out ok on your MRI. You are right, the dr. and techs dont seem to have a clue one way or the other. When i had my MRI done on my spine,(Ii thought it was mets to the spine) He told me good luck! I was scared after he made that comment and was sure that it was mets, but it was not. Best wishes for B9 results
hugs
Debbie

You can get a copy the next day from the place you had it done.
-
benign! I had my GP call and have the results faxed to her. I am so relieved and so mad. I just can't believe they had my results and didn't give them to me or return my call. I am exhausted because of the stress I have been carrying. I'm relieved to get the results.....i do wonder what this lump is though. I think I will be looking for a new Dr for my follow-up care. Thank you ladies so much for your support. I need a nap!
-
Mom3- Oh what wonderful news, so very happy for you! I had a feeling they had them but hadnt got around to calling you, i have seen it happen so many times. If it is benign, then it is a cyst or fibroadema (sp) Now you can enjoy the holidays!
Hugs
Debbie

I had laugh. I went to get the mail today and there was a nice form letter from my dr's office informing me of my benign findings. You know, if that had been a 'routine' mri I would be fine with that but I had a lump with a previous history of bc. Kind of pisses me off. Oh well, I need to let it go and just be HAPPY!
-
I would call and make a complaint to the DR office about this, it is not right to make you wait that long when they had the results in.
I had the same thing happen, my onco said he would call with the results as soon as he got them in, i called my self and got them within the week, 2 weeks later he calls himself to tell me the results, I let him know i was very dissapointed and that i had the results already no thanks to him!
-
Mom3band1g,
CONGRATS!!...Enjoy your holidays!!
-
SO RELIEVED!
Now you can have a great Christmas. -
Great News mom3b&1g on the b9 findings! The onco called and my mri was good too, no mets just killer headaches. Loratab gave me some relief. Hopefully this won't be an ongoing thing. I've never experienced this before.
