Period not returning
Hi everyone, anyone have their period return long after chemo? I had 12 weeks of weekly taxol finished last January and just finished my yesr of H. Anyway I was 30 when going through chemo and since January have had three periods but they were not regular flow. Last one I had was back in august and nothing since I want to badly to have another child but am feeling doubtful with my periods not coming. Just wondering if my period needs more time to regulate or if it's all a sign of early menopause?

First thing that comes to mind when I read this, is get it checked. Have you had imaging done?
My periods came back soon after last chemo. And are very regular, more regular than ever!
Are you on hormonal repressive therapy?
-
I'm just over a month out from finishing chemo and have not had my period return yet, but I agree with Nanna to get it checked. I am going in December to see my RE (the specialist I used for fertililty preservation) and he will do an ultrasound to see what's going on with my ovaries. I hope we both get our periods back! As for the timeline, I think I have heard it can take 6 months to get it back, but my oncologist also said you might ovulate, but not get an actual period while taking Tamoxifen, so that could be a factor as well. So I think an ultrasound would give you the best picture.
-
When i finished my first round of chemo, my period came back within 2 months and was regular. My Onc told me it could take upto a year for it to return, but it came back much sooner. The other thing my oncologist told me was not to try for a child for at least 2-5 years post chemo as the body has gone through too much stress and the toxins are usually floating around so i would check with your oncologist about trying for a child - just in case.
-
I just read it could take a year to get them back... I ended chemo in July but was on Lupron shots to try to preserve my fertility (sure hope it worked!!). I stopped taking the shots in Oct. and got a light period right away but then nothing yet (should have been about a week ago). I have to wait 5 years no matter what because of the Tamox, but tonight that is feeling like an eternity... but grateful for the 2 beautiful kids we already have. Jp, you'll be in my prayers.
-
Thank You! I wish I did the Lupron my doctor didn't mention it. I did however get my period this week! Yay, I have had five periods since chemo so its better than nothing! I'm starting acupuncture and yoga next week...hoping it will help...my onc is fine with us trying in the spring since I just finished herceptin in october you will all be in my prayers!

Mine took almost a full year to come back. And when it did, it came back with a venegence. Heavy, HEAVY bleeding for the first 2 cycles. Weird thing is I used to have horrendous cramps and now I dont have them anymore.
-
Since i last wrote i started Acupunture and holistic health and have had two periods! got one on the day i wrote this topic nov 6th( which was a strange coincidence) and then the next one a few days early Nov 29.....hoping this is a turning point and things are going to get back to normal. it seems to be a normal flow run of the mill period! horray!
-
Not having your period return , or return erratically after chemo is COMPLETELY normal. I completed chemo last November. I didn't get a period until April. I was actually hoping I would not, as mine have always been awful..and I already have my four kids. Since then it's been on and off. I can definitely tell the months when I'm ovulating, and if you can pinpoint that, that's a good thing for trying for a baby.
I had two periods in one month, and one that was 16 days long. My naturopath straightened me out immediately with the excessive bleeding with chaste tree extract and laser treatments that he uses (very similar to accupuncture, coincidentally!
Once it stopped, I went two months with nothing..another ovulation and a period two weeks later. It was extremely light, which again is fine with me after years of horrible bleeding. I'm 42 though, and probably would have been close to peri-menopause anyway - I'm just doing it a couple of years early.
Basically our ovaries have taken a beating and it takes time to heal...staying with the holistic stuff is the best thing!

thanks for the words of encouragement! I love my holistic doc he is awesome and really is treating all angels of things!
-
I am in a similar situation...haven't started menstruating again ~4 months after I finished 4 months of TCH. Still on herceptin, but it's my understanding that by itself it doesn't effect fertility...
I took the Luupron shots as well. Getting impatient... I just turned 33 and wouldn't mind trying for a baby at some point! I've been exercising and doing yoga, etc, but I didn't know if you had any specific things that had worked for you.
Also, if I want to get to a scan or ultra sound of my ovaries, do I do that with a fertility doc? or just a regular gynecologist?
-
I actually did the trans vaginal ultra sound by my onc. he just ordered it for me and wnats it done yearly just to check for overall health but it all looked normal an dthey said they can not see reserve on that type of test need a blood test. 4 months is still very early so hang in there. i am doing acupunture now and my periods seem to be so much better flow and number of days etc. but i also think that herceptin needed to be done too i was getting some periods but they were very different than now and before chemo so i felt like my body needed off everything to get back to normal and i think the acupuncture is really making a difference. the yoga my acupunturist is doing with me is called svaroopa yoga.
-
I am older than you so this may not be the same. I had very normal periods and very normal hormone levels before chemo. I know this because I was trying for another baby via IVF. My period stopped after the first TCH in Dec 2009. It came back in Sept 2011. I also did a year of herceptin.
It stopped for almost 2 years. I decided not to try to carry another baby but I am currently expecting via gestational carrier. Life does go on!!!
-
Whoa, Shadow, you are using a gestational carrier? Is that the same thing as surrogate? I am 38, single, but definitely want to have children. My sister has offered to be a surrogate using my frozen eggs. How does that work? And whose insurance pays? Or is it a self-pay?
-
I am 3.5 months out of chemo( TC x 4), 38 years old, and got my period this past Sunday. It is so heavy, but I am so grateful it came back!!! I swear by womens hath yoga. The positions stimulate the repoductive system! The yoga also kept the hotflashes and night sweats away during chemo. My health pyschologist claims belly dancing can also stimulate ovaries that need a boost.
-
I did 6 rounds of Chemo and my last period was around my 5th round of chemo. It took about 6 months for my period to come back (when I was on tamoxifen) and then I didn't get it again for another 3 months but now I get my period pretty regularly anywhere between 27-33 days. I started ovulating again, stopped tamoxifen after 10 months and fell pregnant 5 months later but miscarried at 8 weeks so we are going to try again. I think sometimes it takes time but definitely get it checked out, i think they can even do a blood test!
-
I am 51 and still menstruating! This, even after AC/T chemo. In fact, I was having ovarian pain and had an ultrasound where the technician saw a lovely follicle ready to burst! Hang in there - anything is possible. Careful with the bloodwork. I was told I was through menopause. Bloodwork is not very reliable.

So we are allowed to start trying this March i have had 5 straight normal periods! i have been taking ovulation tests which say consistently that i am ovulating on around day 10 and my cycles are around 24-28 days so a day ten ovulation may be realistic but of course i worry that the ovulation kit tests arent right! i went to see my holistic doctor yesterday and burst into tears bc i have been feeling so anxious now i felt really good the last few months so hopeful and excited to be having such normal periods but i wasnt able to try then now that we are approaching that time of trying i start to worry what if i cant? my doc reminded me that being in the game is a good thing....im in the game now and i cant worry about the what ifs but geez after cancer the what ifs are easier said than done!!!

Hello, this is my first time posting a message so I hope this is the right place to ask my question.
It has been 2 1/2 years since chemo and I just got my period back. How normal or not is this?
-
As far as i have been told most young women do get them back. Some even continue them through chemo. On average i have read that if u stopped during chemo it can take 3-12mo to get it back. I think u are just fine.
-
Thank you MiniMacsMom. It acutally is 2 1/2 years since. I forgot to add this small but important detail.
-
Okay dumb question - I am getting ready for TCH #2 tomorrow and I am 32 years old...is my period going to stop? No one told me it would but the posts here are making me wonder otherwise.
-
Christina i only got 1 period after tretment and i am 14 weeks in
granted i had nursed my son up until 2 mo before my dx so i only had 3ps or so bf i started chemo. There are so women who do getit all the way through but i think it does stop for a lot of us. Its not a bad thing to stop.... u dont loose as much iron or rbcs
Ja my bad for missing the years thingi would talk to an ob/gyn or a reproductive endocrynologist to make sure everything is ok. Are u on tamox or any shots to but u into menaupause? Also check out young survival coallition if u hVent already. Its a bc forum just for young women. They have talked about this alot there
ps sorry for the mistakes... phone typing.

jpmercy, wishing you all the fertility on the world!!! So happy your periods returned and you can try and have children. ♥

Chrisitina: i am currently 32 i was 30 when dx and just turned 31 when finished chemo i did 12 weeks of weekly taxol and my period stopped about 2 months in, i started terrible chemopause it hotflashes etc. chemopause stopped about 2 months after last chemo and i got my first period around then too but it was not a normal period very light scant kind of thing this continued every 72 days or 45 days it was all over the place in Oct when i finished hercpetin i got my first NORMAL run of the mill period i have had six normal btween 21-29 day periods and this month ihave my oncs blessing to start trying! thanks for the well wishes Makratz! we are hopeful and glad to start trying again! i also should mention i was diagnosed when my son was 6 months old i had just stopped breast feeding and went for a mamo b/c of family history and problems breast feeding so btw being pregnant, breastfeeding and starting chemo i only had 3 periods so i think my hormones were all other the place still when i started chemo. anyway ill keep you all posted and wishing everyone well!!!
-
Thanks for the responses. I will definitely ask my onc about this at my next visit. I think I might I have been told my periods might become lighter, but that's all I remember.

Hello Ladies!
This is my first post & I just want to thank you all for sharing. I don't feel so alone now. My period stopped soon after the first cycle of chemo & it's been 5 months since my last chemo (CTH) and I'm anxiously awaiting for my period to return. The hubby and I were in the middle of trying when I was diagnosed and we are super excited to start trying again after I finish my Herceptin treatments (Oct 2012). I'm amazed but also encouraged by the variability in the timing between last chemo and first period for some of you. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to expedite the process? Since we can't start trying again until 6 months post-Herceptin, I wanted to atleast get my homrones back in balance to increase the chance of us concieving when we do start trying. I'm 37 and we do not have children so needless to say, my clock is ticking louder then ever before!! We can't imagine our life without children so we are looking into other options just in case but it would be nice to have our own.

HappyHanh, welcome to BCO!
Until members post with their experiences, there is extensive information on the main Breastcancer.org site in the Fertility and Pregnancy Issues section.
We hope this helps.

I was 39 at dx my period stopped after 2nd AC and didn't return for 2 yrs.
It's now regular and blood hormones all indicate I'm very permenopausal again. I had a tubal ligation earlier this year as I already have finished my family and my gynae recommended it. -
Hi, I'm 33 now and finished treatment Nov 2010, after nearly 1.5 years later my period not yet returned. I wonder if it ever will return, but reading your post LouLou40 it give me more hope now, as your period returned after 2 years. Looking forward for the same to happen to me
-
I was on tch chemo and my period took months to come back and then would come and go. I am 33. Because of the advanced stage of my disease, I Wasn't planning on having kids. My oncologist wanted me on herceptin indefinitely. But here I am, four and a half months pregnant, and baby is looking good. So to all you women wondering if your period is coming back or if you will be able to have children, take some hope from my experience! Kids after cancer are absolutely possible. And if kids are not in your plan, I would use some kind of contraception even if you think you are starting menopause! Prayers and best wishes for all of you!
