Leg pain after chemo
I finished chemo in Sept, 8th on my wedding anniversary, anyway, about 3 weeks out I began experiencing leg pain. Below the knee in both legs. First it felt like all the juice had been drained out of my muscles so I stretch them but after sitting for only a few minutes I would get up and felt like I was 100. Now here I am 3 months out and still have pain in my right leg. I am of course worried it is bone cancer. I can't tell if it's muscle or bone pain. I also still have some pain lall over like I had when I got the Nulasta shot. Anyone else still have weird pains?

My muscles are not what they were before chemo. They "burn" more quickly upon exertion and are far less flexible than before. I also have the occassional random ache. I was told taxotere (which I had) is very hard on the muscles, so I have been attributing it to that, along with decreased exercise that I really need to get back to.
I too do not really understand the difference between muscle and bone pain. I guess until you experience bone pain, it is difficult to imagine the difference.

I still have muscle aches in both legs, 6 wks pfc, Taxotere included. The upper leg muscles are better, but calf muscles still seem tight and achy. I try to stretch them out, but I, too, must look like an old lady hobbling down the stairs in the morning...

I feel and look like an old lady when I get up. I had 6 treatsments of Tax and though my hair is coming back my legs are so achy. I don't know if anyone else had the Nulasta shot after each treatment but it makes your bones ache. It's actually more of a quick sharp jabbing pain for 2 days. Anyway glad I am not the only one.

ckgrayoh, I had the same thing for many weeks after chemo. Mine actually started during chemo, and was so severe (just in my lower right leg), it would awaken me at night. I finally went and had an MRI, and they didn't find anything. One thing that seemed to help a bit was sleeping with a pillow under that leg. Other than that, it eventually went away, but probably not for 6 mos. And I still get just an occasional light twinge (3 years later). I'm not sure if it's from the Taxotere or Neulasta, but definitely a lingering SE for some of us. In fact, there was another thread here several months ago where others reported the same odd, lower stabbing leg pain.
The achy legs are from the Taxotere. It really does a number on our muscles. I could hardly climb a flight of stairs right after chemo, but that actually resolved pretty quickly, and I think walking (starting at 2 miles a day and building up to 4 or 5) helped rebuild those muscles. I had TC x 4, so I can only imagine how much weaker you are after 6! But our bodies have an amazing capacity to heal and rebuild. It will just take a few weeks. Deanna

Hi Deanna, you're right things will get better!~I started walking on my treadmill in hopes if relievieng pain and preventing reoccurence. Those chemicals are nasty. I am hypersensitive to any pain at this point. I had some neck pain last night and wanted to get an MRI. Just had an xray about 1 month ago for neck pain, all clear. I am really paranoid about "it" coming back.
-
Yes this is VERY typical after treatment. I felt like a fragile old lady.
-
I had a burning pain on the front of my lower left leg that started during chemo and would come and go. It felt like a nerve pain. It's gone now. I agree about the muscles. After a few months my ability to climb stairs is back to normal.
-
So glad I am not alone with achy legs. I thought it was because I was anemic and have never been anemic before. I had 1 tx of Taxotere then 4 tx of A/C with the nulasta shot after each treatment. Thursday I start Taxol so guess I will still have achy legs for a while.

I am 26 weeks out and am still in pain. I feel the same achy muscles and bone pain as when i was getting the shots. I had a shot of Leukine every day for 5 days after the chemo. but not nearly as severe.
It is all over not just in my legs. I finally complained loudly and got a bone scan. Came back clear.
I just wanted an answer, if this is chemo related and will go away eventually I can live with it. But the knot knowing is killing me. I hurt all the time. I cant move very well, 100 year old lady is just about right! No flexability, before chemo I was doing Yoga and could touch my nose to the floor, now I cant hardly bend my legs.
800 mg Motrin and Arthritis strength Tylenol does not work. I take vitamins and Biotin, which is a form of B.
HELP!!!

I found a thread for me! I am about 3 months post chemo. I had DD A/c followed by 12 weekly taxol. Now I have developed this severe bone pain- 90% in my legs (hips, femurs knees) My onc put my on fentanlyl pain patches with vicodin for break through pain, I am worried how limited I will me now.
and how will I know the difference between this and bone mets.

I finally got the docs to listen about the pain!!! I got sent to a rhumatologist, she thought at first it was fibromialgia, I had all the pressure pain points, then she did the blood test!
My vitamin D level is critically low!! Low end is 30 good is 100. I am at 12. This will cause all kinds of bone pain and muscle fatigue and weakness. I would never have gotten better. I am taking 50,000mg of Vit D once a week for a month them blood work again. I am going to have a bone density test and see just how bad this screwed me up considering I have a compression fracture in my back because of it!!!
PLEASE ASK YOUR DOCTORS TO DO VIT D AND B TESTS IF YOU ARE IN PAIN.
I am angry that the Onc. did not do this or even consider that this may have been the problem. I am sure lots of women get this after chemo and the shots!!

I am in Littleton Colorado. I had my last round of Chemo on October 21. I was getting Taxotere as well as another chemo medicine. I also had to get the shot. I have had pain in my legs in the past but it only lasted a few days and was not anywhere close to what it is now. I have so much pain in my legs, thighs and calves and sometimes the knees. The pain is intense not so bad when I'm sitting but still pretty bad. Walking up stairs is almost impossible. I have been told I am at high riisk for blood clots so an ultra sound has been done and found nothing. I'm concerned about other things such as bone cancer or anything else. No medicine or anything has helped. I have a low tolerance for pain and can hardly stand this. I have yet another doctor appointment tomorrow. I'm so tired of dr. appointments

I completed Chemo on October 21 and am in absolute pain. I can't even work and don't know if this will go away.Walking, Climbing stairs, even just sitting hurts. I am not getting any concrete answers. The only thing I have received 3was that I "don't have blood clots" and that it is chemo related. I had pain during chemo but absolutely nothing like this. It went away. This hasn't. I've been dealing with this for over a month!!

Have you recently had your K, Mg, Zn ( potassium, magnesium, zinc) levels checked recently? Low or imbalanced levels can cause all sorts of issues. 1/2 way through Taxol, I started having issues with keeping my K levels even close to 'normal' (still do 5 yes later) so I have to take mega doses of it to keep in the 'normal' range. Be careful and do not try taking mega doses of any of the 3 without Dr approval. They need to be inappropriate ratios to work as should. Also, especially the K (potassium) can cause problems if too much is taken in. How about your Bit.D levels? Especially in winter, our Vit. D levels are often very low.
Have you had a bone density test recently? Chemo can hurry osteopenia/steoporosis on. Or developing arthritis?
Perhaps seeing a chiropractor. I was always skeptical of them so never went to one until recently. I so wish I had gone years ago when I started using one for 2 of my horses. The relief that they both got was unbelievable.
Just some thoughts if nothing else helps.

Be sure it sD3, our bodies don't make or use it well. Even being out in the sun. I'm in Florida and was D3 deficient

Hi there, i finished chemo on August 11th 2017 and it's now end of October, its 10 weeks since I finished chemo. I had 6 rounds, 3 of FEC and 3 Docetaxyl. I am experiencing awful aching and pains in my legs. I recently finished 15 fractions of radiation (3 weeks ago and started Tamoxifen 6 weeks ago). I am working (and worked through my chemo with the odd days off on my worst days). By the end of the day, my legs are worse and I walk like a 90 year old woman and I am only 49! When I sit down it's hard to get up, and I have even more difficulty when I have to get up off the floor! Is there anybadvice how to deal with it or how long it will last?

MVDW,
Sorry to hear that you have bad leg pain.
I had 8DD which ended 06/26/17. Chemo keeps giving even after it ends. My bone pain lasted for about 3 months. Not sure whether you are getting rads. I felt clear diff 2 wks after rads ended.
I did intense PT. Took prescription NSAID.daily Epsom salt scrub and walk.I still do epsom salt. I am soon to be 48. I felt like 88 yrs old.
