Facebook status - grrrrr

Options

Ok, honestly, I am totally fed up with the facebook copy-paste status.

You know what I'm talking about, right? The one that says (approximately, wording may change but the idea is the same) " I ask a personal favor....and this is REALLY personal for several of my friends [heroes] right now...only some of you will do it, and I know who you possibly are, ~~~~~if you know someone who fought a battle with cancer and passed away, or someone who still fighting...please add this to your status for 1 hour as a mark of respect and remembrance I hope I was right about the people who will do it."

Ok, I don't know why seeing yet ANOTHER one of these silly things today was the last drop.

So I've put on my own personal status. It says:

I ask a personal favor - and I DO know very few of you will actually get up and do it.

If you know someone is fighting or fought a battle with cancer and are either cancer patients or cancer survivors, get off your butt and give them a call to see how they're doing. Then get off your butt and cook a meal for them, or take them to a doctor appointment, or help them clean their house or do their grocery shopping.

I can assure you, me and other cancer patients/survivors would really appreciate that. Copying and pasting a status on facebook doesn't show us any kind of respect - it only shows us that you are doing it to feel good that "you respected someone who fights/fought cancer" and then can go on with your life, putting us somewhere in the back of your thoughts."

Ok, ranting enough?

Now as a personal favor, copy and paste my status on your facebook page, *rolling on the floor laughing*

While I don't like the Facebook BC posts, I really don't think your solution is respectful to either cancer patients or your friends.

Really? and why isn't it respectful to the cancer patients/survivors? Because I think it's quite obvious it's not intended to be respectful to the rest.

The one I hate most is the "we all have many wishes, but cancer patients only have one wish, to get well..." one. No, we don't stop wishing for iPads, better jobs, chocolate cake, world peace, a pony, or anything else that people who haven't had cancer wish for!

Eloise - I completely agree. Your post is part of my point earlier. Cancer patients are normal people. We don't need to be singled out for special attention, pity, or assistance.

You all might like to know that there was one that another board member ... who shall remain nameless unless she wants to out herself ... got the other day that actually contained some useful information.

It told us how to make that cute little heart on FB ... <3 does it.

Finally we got something out of all that crap Laughing

I just have to add to this post on Facebook Statuses. I also get annoyed at these status updates that have been copied and pasted, the worst ones also say something like "will you copy and paste this to show you care or are you too selfish to do it?" That makes my blood boil! It's not about being selfish why should I copy and paste a piece of text like some sheep, what on earth does that prove??! They are just the same as chain letters in my opinion. I once found a hilarious quote that said "I didn't send this to 20 of my friends and guess what? I'm still alive!"

Another thing that annoys me is seeing stupid trivial statuses from people moaning about their lives or their hair. I posted something recently that said "For anyone who says FML (f**k my life) you seriously need to get a grip and stop being so ungrateful!" These people will use that saying when their hair doesn't go right or they have to do extra time at work!

OMG I literally HATE that "a PERSON has a 1000 wishes, but a CANCER PATIENT has only one".  Not only the "I only think of myself" - you'd better believe I would die for my daughter to be able to see - but also, uh.....I'm a person, too.  "Cancer patient" didn't take it away.

I do love your status up to the "cut and paste" part.  Just because some people actually do think that is helpful.  I'm not saying those are smart people, but it is the truth.

Plus, you catch more flies with honey and frankly I think the rest is so well-worded that you might actually make a person or two take action.  Lots of people *really* do want to help, but *really* don't know how.

This was my recent Facebook status,

"We all have many wishes...a new house, a new car, nice clothes, but a cancer patient has only one wish...for her FREAKING landlord to CALL HER BACK about her leaky refrigerator.  97% of my friends won't repost this status, but that is because they have REFRIGERATORS THAT WORK!   Oh, I also want to kick cancer's ass, but I already did that, so a working refrigerator would be nice."

Ok, I reposted it with a slight change.

For this holiday season - I ask a personal favor - and I hope at least a few of you will actually get up and do it.

If you know someone is fighting or fought a battle with cancer and are either cancer patients or cancer survivors, get off your butt and give them a call to see how they're doing. Then get off your butt and cook a meal for them, or take them to a doctor appointment, or help them clean their house or do their grocery shopping. Maybe even help them decorate? At least for breast cancer patients/survivors, lifting our arms above shoulder level is excruciating pain or physically impossible after a mastectomy.

I can assure you, me and other cancer patients/survivors would really appreciate that."

Couldn't agree more :)) I have been watching these status updates with a growing frustration.. If you know someone with ADHD, if you know someone with ME, or an invisible disease, if you know someone with bla bla bla.".. Sigh! I know people with all kinds of diseases some invisible some not. Families struggling with ADHD .... Should I feel bad if I don't paste and post all these different updates... NOT!

Ugh hate hate hate those status updates!  Have a son with Aspeger's and ADHD and a Brain Tumor and hated them before - but adding the cancer now makes me hate them so so much more!!!  If they have so much time to post it in their status then why don't they have time to even send an email asking how you're doing???

Day, you rock. My new mantra is, if anyone is offended by the way I think or the things I say...Eff em. I don't think you have any obligation to censor yourself here, on fb, or anywhere else. Personally, I thought your original post was perfect.

    LOVE yours too Sweetbean.

    Thank for the laughs.

I know right... the difference is that the first one was mostly with a "slap in the face" purpose, while the second one is actually trying to make people think to help. I think I'll post it again and remove the "get off your butt' part... even if most people really need a whack on the head before thinking to get off their butts, lol
