Survivor, I am so glad the Herceptin went easier this time. Lynch syndrom, huh? I never heard of that. My dh's father had colon cancer on his side of the family... his father's sister and brother had colon cancer, so his Dad got tested regularly. He ended up getting kidney cancer... UGH...
My cancerversary isn't for a few months, but I will celebrate it BIG this year!
Have a great weekend everyone!

Well, today with my one more day of life I finished work early and DH and I went to take a bike ride before it got dark. We got in 50 minutes just as it was turning dusk.
Hey ladies, I wanted to share something with you. Many of you know I have been doing a mostly plant based diet. Then recently, my daughter in college had a class where they made them watch the frist 45 minutes of "Super size me" and then the first 45 minutes of "Fathead". (Both interesting, BTW). In any case, Fathead sort of was focusing on lower carbs. So I started using "MyFitnessPal.com" with DD and was entering what I ate. I find out I am really high in carbs and low in protein. I guess to be expected if you don't eat much meat.
So anyway, I started focusing on more protein and less processed carbs like bread, pasta, etc, that quickly turn into sugar and can cause inflamation/oxidation. But here is the thing I wanted to tell you. I seem to have much more "staying power" with more protein! Today's bike ride was after work on a Friday afternoon, and I was really booking it. I was not exhausted at week's end like I sometimes am.
I have been eating more Tofu, Sockeye salmon, and eggs. Oh and I even at chicken and turkey (gasp!!). I am aiming at around 60 grams per day now. I bet that is easily double what I was doing before.
Just sharing! Love you all! Springie
ps, did I tell you all my Vit D is now 67, and osteopath says they aim between 60-70? so now I am finally good, after all these years...
-
Spring, I'm so glad you shared your experience with increasing your protein intake and feeling better for it. I've been wondering the same thing. It just doesn't seem like I've been getting anywhere near the protein I should be now that I rarely eat any animal protein. I'm going to follow your lead, really work on upping my protein, and see if it makes a difference. Along the same lines of continually trying to improve what we're doing, I've recently been conversing on-line with a renown integrative doctor, and he's given me some great additional insight, in addition to my ND's recommendations. The more I talk to him, the more I understand that bc isn't a one size fits all disease, nor is there a one size fits all solution. One thing he's very keen on is eating based on your blood type. And since he's a PhD/Nutritional Biochemist, I tend to think there's probably more to that theory than I realized.
Our Santa Ana winds are back so strong today that I didn't walk until just a short time ago, when they'd died down a bit. But I got in an hour -- probably just about 3 miles due to the strong winds.
I hope everyone's enjoying the weekend and getting whatever they need to do for the holidays accomplished! Deanna
-
Deanna, Funny! my osteopath was just talking to me about being A+ blood type and how this means I can be vegan/vegeterian and no dairy, low gluten, and eat beans. ha! I don't honestly "get it", but it is one more thing to consider I guess!
Yesterday was a 50 minute bike ride (so glad we suffered the chill so I could avoid the elliptical beast!) and today is going to be even a little warmer, so we're thinking of a longer bike ride. Gotta get the tires inflated though, was sorta pushing hard yesterday!
-
Spring- myfitnesspal is great! I love it. Thanks for the info on protein. I always tend to eat some with my meal: a little fish or chicken. Last night I had lamb. I guess I needed red meat. Or if it is vegetarian I am having, I definitely eat beans. But thank you for reminding me too.
I still love my macrobiotic food plate: beans, brown rice, kale, carrot, squash, seaweed with tahini and olive oil.
-
I am reading another interesting book that I recommend to you all :
Traditional Chinese Medicine: A Woman's Guide to Healing from Breast Cancer by Nan Lu. He is a TCM doctor and looks at bc from a TCM point of view. I got it from my local public library. But on amazon I saw used ones for $2. I think it is worth it.
-
70 minute bike ride!! Beautiful weather !!! I am so thankful that right now I have a strong, healthy, working body. I honestly don't think I've ever been in shape this good prior. It is fantastic!!!
-
I feel similarly Spring. Even though I am still in treatment with Herceptin and it wears me out on occasion, I feel great as a result of eating healthy and exercising as much as I can. If only I could change my "home" surroundings! ( It will happen eventually...)
I forgot to write that last night that I rode my bike packed with groceries and sweated quite a bit. Considering the knee-ache I am having after the last Herceptin I think, I deserve a medal.
-
Walked with DD and GDD and doggies yesterday, then did some aerobics/yoga stretches yesterday. Leg muscle is starting to heal, still feel a bit of it though, but BETTER!
Lots of interesting stuff here. Not sure about the blood type diet, mine has me eating lots of meat and no grains/legumes...
Whatever works for you and your beliefs is fine in my book!! Have a fantastic day all!
Survivor, sending you extra hugs today!! You do deserve a medal
-
Yes, I would like to know more about eating according to one's own blood type. Any more info on that? I am A+.
-
Yesterday - Walked, jumping jacks and stretches....had to skip yoga last night thought I was WAY too exhausted and needed to decompress at home.
Jumping jacks and some sun salutations this morning, geting ready for my lunch walk soon.
Survivor, you can google the blood type diet.

Just popping in for a sec. I am at work and totally bored. Very few guests tonight. They are closing the Inn down on the 18th till the 26th. Good thing I still have some vacation time to use. I finally went out with the 2nd blind date. Better than the first guy but not for me. Guess I feel like the dirt on the swifer ads and will just wait to find someone some day. Had two guys hit on me this weekend. Either I'm looking good or they are desperate! My divorce was final on the 22nd. We still haven't had a settlement case yet and that will be after the first of the year.
Thought of ya'll on the wet coast. You are being blown away and I'm sitting here with the doors open at 8:30 pm. Wed it is suppose to start raining and then turning cold on thurs. Of course they are my days off!! Xmas employee dinner on Thursday. I have put a few things up but not pulling to much out. My roommate from college is flying me out to NM for a few days before Xmas. I was totally surprised.
If anyone is trying to figure something to give for Xmas look at the joyjars.org it is a girl with brain cancer and looks like a good thing to support. Just saying.......
Have a great week. And keep moving
-
Hi Joy, good to hear from you... so you are divorced but not settled. I hope it all works out well for you.
I did 45 on the elliptical tonight. To dark to cycle after work. Hate the dark! blech.
-
Joy, yes good to hear from you!! Divorce is final...CHECK....settlement is pending...THINKING of you!! How cool is your friend for flying you out to NM!!!! How fun, have a great time and enjoy
Our winds finally subsided, leaving behind frosty chilly mornings, but sunshine! yay for sun and getting rid of the fog and winds.
more jumping jacks and yoga stretches, and a walk yesterday (not brisk though - leg still bothering me).
Cheers all and have a great day!!
-
90 minute yoga class! Avoided the Down dogs hoping not to agravate the tructal LE any more. Grrrrr. I hate it when it acts up, and I can't even figure out what did it this time. So annoying...
-
Deanna, Spring and Kari --I looked up blood type diet and wow! I am A+ and I am to eat vegetarian, which I do and enjoy. Thank you for the new info. I am exploring it.
Joy- so good to hear from you and that your divorce is finalized. I hope to get there someday. I am working on it and actually had opened up to some friends about what I am going through. I will keep you posted how things unfold in the near future.
Speaking of marriages. Yesterday, H and I had a big fight. Afterwards, I went for a 3 hours walk in the park. Though it was raining and was a bit chilly, I enjoyed it. In between, I sat down to have lunch in a new and very cool Italian restaurant. Had roasted squash soup and Penne alla Fiorentina - Spinach cream sauce finished with fresh ricotta cheese. So, at the end, I rather enjoyed the day that started out with a bang. Today, I might have to skip the gym, though, I was planning to go. I am going to accompany a 28 years old woman with bc to the hospital. She has no one to go with and is terrified of the procedure. I think it is MRI of the underarm. She has big pain. Anyway, I met her on Tuesday at the Young Survivors Meeting. So that is my plan for today. Much love to you all!

Hi Everyone,
I admire everyone doing yoga. I wish I could get over my nervousness about it. I haven't come up with an outfit that disguises my mastectomy and is still functional. I'm afraid I'm going to have a "wardrobe malfunction" during some of those yoga poses! I did sign up for some body fit classes, so I guess that's a start.
Thanks for the book recommendation about Chinese Medicine. I think I'm going to read it. Right now I'm just following a basic diet and trying to avoid contaminants. I'm always open to new ideas though. I'm taking Neonatal vitamins for hair regrowth, but I still have some receding and thinning up front. So tired of wearing a baseball cap at the gym. Oh well.
Cath -
45 minutes on the elliptical. done. phew.
Cath, I wish you could find a comfortabe way to try yoga, start with a nice gentle class. I know you would love it.
-
Cath, I've had my foob come flying out of my top twice and bonk me on the chin while doing downward dog. Lately, I've been going without it in class. Its dark outside and I'm hoping nobody notices!!
-
Hi everyone, I've missed all of you, but, being away from here more has been good for me, and work has been out of control busy. It correlates with my out of control LE unfortunately. I think its is getting worse because I'm just plain using it too much. So, it has effected upper body strength training.
Did my FAVORITE work out again tonight Spring, yoga by firelight.
-
Yay for Yoga by Firelight KMMD!!!
Taking a night off. DH wants to try feezing cycling tomorrow. I dunno. Maybe the crosstrainer inside warm house is looking pretty good at this point!!!!
-
I hear you Spring. I used to love running outside in the winter, now I look out the window, shiver, and get on the tradmill
-
I agree... It is TOO COLD .... BRRR.... I have to confess... I haven't been exercising...
I have some kind of crud... and I got a Rx for some antibiotics... today is day #3...
Last week was kinda rough for me. Every day, I seemed to have errands and it seemed like they took ALL DAY... Now I am glad to just stay home and rest...
Hope everyone is doing well.
Have a great weekend!

Harley44, rest is totally underrated! It's probably a good idea to take a break if you're getting sick. I always make the mistake of pushing through things and end up making things worse.
By the way, I found a good exercise bra from lululemon ; I may even go to yoga now.
Cath -
Cath, thanks. I feel like a wimp when I don't keep up with my exercise, but I have noticed since chemo, I pick up these bugs easier, and my immune system isn't very good, so it takes longer to get over these things, too... so I guess I will have to be a wimp... but at least I am still alive...

I've noticed the same thing Harley. I get pretty cheesed off with people who go around sick spreading the wealth. I think Harley the thing about long term sticking with it like we have been doing here (we're measuring years now not months) means there are intermittent bad weeks or two. The difference is when you have exercise as part of your life your body bounces back quicker from those times that you are off for illness. If you had just started exercising 3 months ago a week now would hurt, averaged out over the last several and you can get sick and not have it disrupt you. The key is to get back to it when you can (slowly as you recover--not hard enough to cause a relaps)
-
So we'll be bugging you about your 10 minutes in another week
-
Harley, I hope you feel better. I hate being sick.
Today we took a bike ride and it was 51 degrees out. I think this is the coldest I want to go! Tomorrow is a high of 48 and I'm going to do the elliptical!! Was a good ride though...
-
Harley- sorry to hear you are not feeling well. I was sick a few weeks ago -I don't know if you remember- but since then, I have been drinking fresh orange juice mixed with fresh ginger and kale.I do this almost daily. I am convinced that that helped me to recover faster. Now, I make ginger tea --pour hot water over crushed/cut ginger every day -- to strengthen my immune system. Hope you feel better soon!
Yesterday, I had a nice bike ride, but no exercise for me today. Instead, after work, I had a fun-filled evening with two adorable four year olds making sugar cookies. Since I have no kids such events are so precious for me. I had so much fun. I did not want to come home.
-
My grandkids are in a Xmas play at church on Wednesday so I am heading up to see them and coming back on Thursday and in the meantime cleaning my home and packing. Looking forward to my trip. I haven't been anywhere except VA for 3 day trips since 2000.
Got so excited the other day. I can put my hair up in a ponytail. It is the little things that excite me!! I was excited when I had fuzz!!
Cath, I just wear a big t-shirt and sweatpants when I do yoga. The gentle yoga is mainly strectches and it is soooo god to do. Hope you are feeling better Harley. The cold air is back for a while. I rally did enjoy the warm days last week. I went Xmas shopping in short sleeves!
Everyone have a great week.
