How many of you have gone through a MX for DCIS and they found either more areas of DCIS or another type of cancer in the final pathology report?

How many of you decided on a BMX and then found out the "healthy" breast also had DCIS or another type of cancer?

    They found more DCIS but they expected that because they didn't get clear margins in my excisional biopsy.  But they didn't find any other cancer anywhere else in that breast.

    I had a BMX. DCIS in the right breast and they found more, but that was expected because I had absolutely no clean margins in the large lumpectomy sample. In my pre-surgery MRI, a spot was found in the left breast. I did not want to go through the biopsy, then lumpectomy, etc again. I had already made up my mind that if they even SUSPECTED anything in the other breast, I just wanted it off.

    Turns out the left breast had PASH, a benign breast tumor that can grow infinitely and the only treatment for it is surgical removal.

    So nothing was a surprise for me, other than the fact the left spot was not cancer.

    Hi Katiebug,

    I had a BMX. The DCIS in my left breast was more extensive than they originally thought. The right, prophylactic, breast had atypical hyperplasia, which didn't show up on the mammogram or MRI.

    I had a BMX, R side was supposed to be prophy, came back as small focus of DCIS present.  However, there is disagreement between path opinions on that - some say DCIS, some say it is ADH.  Either way, I'm glad it's gone.

    I had 4.4cm and <.1mm margins in lumpectomy, Grade 3 (high). The biopsy 6 months earlier was not even clear it was DCIS, just maybe sorta kinda looking like it might be one day thinking about possibly turning into DCIS, nooooo rush, maybe even leave it if you want, after all a lot of these don't become anything worth worrying about (and all that nonsense they spew). After lumpectomy, they suggested revision and rads and I said screw that I want a BMX. We compromised on UMX (51 weeks ago) and indeed there was more DCIS near (but not immediately at) the previous incision. My other mammogram is clear but they will dissect the breast when they finally remove it next week. I'll be happy if it's all normal, and I will be okay if it's DCIS. I'll be furious if it's anything else.

    Thank you for your responses.  I was curious because I was deciding on whether to have a UMX or BMX.  I have since decided on a BMX for those exact reasons...I don't want to take any chances of leaving any cancer in my affected breast or having undectectable cancer in my "healthy" breast.  Just not worth taking the chance, especially since I tend to worry over things and I know I'd be constantly worrying about my "healthy" breast changing.

    Katiebug, that's why I did BMX...b/c I'm a worrier.  This is a very personal decision and the right decision is different for each person.  If you know yourself well, as it appears you do, you can make a decision and feel comfortable with it.  (Well, as comfortable as anyone can with having bc.  Uggh!)  Best wishes to you!

    I had a BMX for DCIS on L side but found LCIS in "healthy" breast.  Although it's not a true cancer, it puts you at a higher risk for developing BC.  I was at peace with my decision then and still am.  Good luck.
