Very concerned
Hello ladies,
I posted over on the "Not Diagnosed but Worried" board and got lots of great info., but they recommended that I post here for more specific information concerning IBC. I am 37 yrs old and awoke last Sunday with a stabbing/throbbing pain under my left nipple. There is now a good marble size lump on my areola and pushing the nipple up. I saw my ob/gyn on Thursday and she started me on antibiotics but she also was proactive and made an appt for me with a breast surgeon for this coming Tuesday. She said "best case is it's just an infection and the antibiotics clears it up". Well, no such luck yet. It is the same size and same pain intensity. Since I had mastitis while I was breastfeeding a year ago I knew that most infections also present with flu-like symptoms (which I do not have). So of course a quick Google check led me to reading how many times IBC is first thought to be an infection. Unfortunately the area under the painful lump is now light red and I definitely see some of the orange peel look in that spot. I am of course terrified. I try not to worry but then I look at my 3 kids (ages 6, 5 and 16 months) and can't help it. I have never had a mammogram or any other tests,, So I don't even know what tests the breast surgeon will be ordering on Tuesday (or what I ought to be sure he orders). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!!

Glad your obgyn is referring you to a breast surgeon and you don't have to wait too long. I did not have any pain, just an itchy bug bite and a 3.5cm tumor with a swelled breast, redness & warmth. Most ibc people don't have the tumors. Your doctor may do an ultrasound & it may be easier to detect with the lump. A biopsy should tell you the diagnosis.
It's hard to say not to worry, but take it easy. I had to wait 3 weeks b/4 being seen and it seems your doctor is on top of it. Let us know and I hope it turns out nothing to be worried about.

I hope that it does clear up and turns out not to be IBC. If you want more information, there is a website www.ibcsupport.org with a great group of ladies. There is a lot of support there and many people can answer questions as they have been through this process of diagnosis.
Wishing you the best,
Laura Jean
