Bak94-I had a bilat MX and I have no problem finding cute clothes so don't let that keep you from working. I am an electrician in a factory (very physical job) and just returned to work after 9 months off. I knew I wouldn;t be able to work thru the heat this summer. I wish I could have stayed off til I finished Rads but I was broke and had to go back. I do not regret taking off even if it took all my savings. for one thing it sure clears up NEED vs WANT.
As for the Rads area. My tumor was primarily in the chest wall-not so much in the breast. they lay a large pad called a bolus across my chest when they shoot me that makes it so the rads only go deep enough to hit the chest wall. i am having supraclav area done but refusedf the axilla. I am only 12 tx in and have just started with a burn where I wasn;t putting cream on. I guess I didn;t realize til fri that it was part of my field.
My advice-if you can afford to take off do it-you have the rest of your life to work.
-
Saw redness and itching after three treatments and was told it was too early to see reaction. By week two, I was very dark and red under my breast and under my arm. Took until week three to see overall redness but had open spots under my breast by then.
-
My skin started turning pink after my second treatment but it was red after maybe 2. I think it took a couple weeks for my nipple to get raw. However, I didn't feel the fatigue for a long time and even now, I'm probably not as fatigued as most. Im not sure I would feel this peppy after MX and chemo, but I was lucky and just had the lump. The skin irritation and the swelling (my affected breast is now a cup size larger) are my main complaints.
-
My skin started turning pink around #10, by #16 it starting getting purple-red and my underboob started to break open, peel and seep. My underarm also turned black and raw. It wasn't until #21 that I had an approx. 5cm open area on my underboob and my armpit was so raw I was crying in pain. The techs didn't want to proceed and the RO finally said I had to take a week off rads (which they rarely do). I missed 4 days of work and just went back today. I'm about 80 percent better with just an open area of approx 1cm. I'm worried because I restart rads tomorrow. 2 whole breast and 5 boosts. The boosts will be targeted to the scar on the underboob. I just don't want a relapse. And I thought fatigue was going to be my problem. I haven't had any of that! I'm so anxious to get this over with now!

Thanks, everyone, for sharing your journey. I know everyone is unique but it's good to know approximately when certain effects are likely to show up.
-
Hi all,
After a week I thought I had slight swelling, but I also adjusted some drugs too. Nothing visual yet...
Question: some ladies have described axilla skin damage and discomfort. I noticed that some did not have affected nodes. So, why is the underarm being irradiated? Does it depend on where the tumor was? How would I know the extent of my irradiated area?
They took x-rays Friday and I see my R.O. tomorrow. I guess I can ask her to describe the area or to show me the x-rays and explain.
I don't know whether to be putting products on the underarm or not.
Can anyone fill me in?
Thanks,Joan
-
I did not have any nodes affected and did not have a node biopsy. I'm not sure why mine were being radiated unless it was because of the tumor grade. I will ask tomorrow. I put the lotions on my underarm area as well and also used the aluminum-free deodorant. The friction created under my arm from the excessive amount of movement I do at work probably contributed to my skin breakdown.
-
Thanks,rn4babies...I think I will ask also...Joan
-
I had my 17th on friday...starting to get pink and blotch of red near my collar bone (axillary) and under my armpit hurts (feels like someone is pressing?) and as far as fatigue..felt it after 2nd treatment..usually start getting tired on the way home..hoping my skin holds out this week!!
-
Hi Joan...I asked why my underarm (where I had positive nodes) wasn't being done and my collarbone area (superior axillary??) and I was told that surgery took out lymph nodes and they go to the next area and shoot that...so I guess they just follow chain..not sure if someone with dcis would have armpit done? and was also told that because I had lymph node dissection in armpit that rads would draw blood to area and would have pain from that not actually from rads to armpit...can't wait for this to be over..ugh

LuvRVing - I have had 15 treatments - I do not have red or burning skin, but the fatigue is starting to kick-in. It is not debilatating, but today I had to leave my shopping cart of full of non-perishable items at the front of a store and leave. I just could not wait in line - too tired. Darn-it-all.
-
Duh to me - did not proof read previous message - 'meant to type, "my shopping cart full of...."
-
Anandagram - that's funny about "abandoning cart" - I did that one Friday after chemo. I looked at the line and said to myself, "I don't have that wait in me!" Sounds like your skin is holding up really well!
-
LuvRving If you are not sure of where they are irradiating ask them to draw an outline of the field. They did that for me just before my first treatment and I knew where to put my cream.I have had 18 treatments and my skin is holding up fairly well. I use hydrocortisone cream after the rads, followed by Miaderm cream and put Aquaphor on my nipple area. Since the 14th treatment I have also done Domeboro soaks (1 packet to 16 ozs of water) two or three times a day.) My RO said to mix up and put in refrigerator. I pour alittle into a glass bowl and briefly heat in microwave to take chill off. I use paper towels to soak up solution and apply for twenty minutes changing towels after ten minutes. A mixed solution lasts about two days. Hope that is of assistance to you. Good luck.

My breast has been pink since the second treatment and swollen since the end of the first week, which they said was early. Last week the radiated area switched color into a blackish purple which isn't very becoming. After treatment 19 I noticed that the nipple was getting a bit sore ... and now I am waiting for nr 20. Not much fatigue yet. I fall asleep earlier, but then I get up earlier too, and get home later.
They do my armpit though I had no positive nodes, but the tumor was near the armpit, so maybe that is why.
Those of you who have raw areas ... my English fails me here. Do you mean that these areas are completely without skin?
-
I had chemo before surgery and no scans showed positive axilla nodes, but did show positive internal mammary nodes. I haven't had my set up appointment yet but the ro did mention radiation to the axilla, im nodes and supraclavicle. My snb was negative so far, final path on Tuesday. He also said I could completely forego rads if my final path report is negative, and they could do a watch and wait thing. I am pretty sure I will do rads even if path report shows complete response.
Mandalala-raw would mean skin is still there, but very thin and sensitive, and redish and sore.
-
Bak94 – thanks, that is reassuring after all, compared to what I thought ...
-
I am not having axilla nodes done but one of the angles they shoot at me gets part of the armpit. That was the part where I burned because I didn;t realize it was going thru there. Having the weekend off seems to have helped-and now that I know I have to put cream there.
Since I started back to work last week I have been doing some sweating and was kind of mortified that I might smell bad to the rads techs. My sweat smells like drugs because of the Herceptin. I apologized and they laughed and said they have some people who smell so bad they put on masks-or take turns doing those people.

After reading your posts about skin reactions I am even more thankful that I have held up really well. I've just had some redness and some itching, but my skin has not broken open. I am so sorry to hear those of you who have had more severe reactions. I hope you can find things to help manage throughout the remainder of your treatments. It's so challenging when you all have already been through so much.
I am on the homestretch now. Today I have the last of my 'regular' treatment, #28, have boost simulation tomorrow, then have 5 boosts. I will be done next Tues., the day after my birthday. Best present ever. To be done with radiation! For any of you who have had the boosts, how did that go? I can't wait to be on the other side of this. Although then I get to go back on the Arimidex, which I am not looking forward to, along with a Zometa infusion for osteoporosis.
Praying for all of you. You have been such an encouragement and inspiration to me. This is a tough battle, but you ladies ROCK!!
-
Hi - Haven't posted in a while. Today will be treatment #13 out of total of 33 (28 with 5 boosts. So far only a little redness and some itching. I have a history of eczema and the doctor prescribed a steroid cream that has done the trick. I've been using Aquaphor about 2x daily and not sure if having dark African-American skin is helping with possible skin issues or not but I haven't had any issues.
Don't think I'm having any significant fatigue. Chemo was much worse. My work schedule has changed significanty to adapt to Rads schedule so I attribute that to my need to be in bed by 10pm.
Really I'm more concerned about my hair growth. hahaha
Thanks for reading.
-
Mandalala, what I call raw is that my skin is sort of abraded, like I have "road rash," if you know that expression. It looks like it has been scraped against something very hard and rough.
-
JenBro Have you had the Zometa infusion before? Be sure to drink lots of water the day before and the day of according to forum they have on it and some have suggested Advil, ibuprofen etc. Good luck. My oncologist mentioned once but hasn't since so I will wait and see.
-
Its Monday...back to it. It was nice having two days off. I have had 4 rounds and I am starting to feel some minor itching. I had the DIEP surgery so my breast is all numb and there is no feeling there. But I do feel something on my skin. My rad center recommended Utter Cream. So I got a jar and been putting it on. So far so good. But I have only started.
Missey29 - I think your dark skin has a lot to do with it. They told me I might have problems as I am very fair skin and burn easily. I agree...chemo was 100xs worse. I had to laugh at the hair growth comment. I am feeling the same. I am watching my hair grow and its like watching the grass grow. Gotta write a letter to Santa asking for my hair back soon!
Happy for you JenBro..you are almost done.
Hope everyone has a side effect FREE week!

Bak94 - I have been on medical leave from work. I admire any who can work while on chemo. I had so many bad days that there was no way I could work. I am still off while on rads. Be kind to yourself. You will get back to work. I cannot wait to go back to work. That will mean I am no longer sick. I always admire hair stylists being on their feet all day...I could not do it even if I didn't have cancer. You will get back to work...just take time off and get well.

Hi All!
My skin under the armpit (near my sentinal node scar) is like raw meat!! OMG, it just started hurting this weekend. I can't even wear a bra anymore as it's too painful. It's all swollen and chopped up LOL They mixed Lidocaine and Aquafor again for me today, with more Lidocaine and less Aquafor. I had treatment #23 today and I only have 7 more to go (2 full breast and this Thursday my boosts start for 5 treatments). I'm African-American and somewhat carmel-colored. My breast is REALLY dark now due to the treatments.
I worked on and off during chemo, which was hard -- and I am driving an hour, coming home, changing and going to work for a couple of hours, but I've hit the wall. Come this thursday, I'm taking 8 days disability. The fatigue is unbearable. I was grocery shopping with my husband yesterday and I could barely push the cart and walk around. I'm in bed by 7:30 or 8pm and up at 5am to the cancer center. I can't wait for it to be over with!! Ahhhh!
-
Natters - I was in the same position for both the regular and the boosts, on my back with my arms raised over my head. My scar is in the 3'oclock position, vertical. That area got pretty red during the course of the 5 boosts but the scar held intact.
Bak94 - hi, I'm in Seattle too. I had a lumpectomy at Swedish in August and just finished rads last week. Sounds like you have a tough decision to make, but i agree that you should allow plenty of time to rest and recover.
LuvRVing - I was lucky and didn't get red until the 5th week. My fatigue started in week two, though. But once I started my boosts, the fatigue suddenly went away. Not sure if it was related or not, but one day I was tired and the next, I wasn't.
-
JenBro - my boosts were really easy and quicker than the whole-breast. I did end up getting a big red oval where the boosts went (on my scar) but the rest of my breast got a chance to heal and start to fade, which is great. My fatigue went away right around the start of the boosts, too. the best part is the countdown - by the time you are in boosts you are so close to done that it's exciting (at least for me) to go every day.
I wore a bra yesterday for the first time in 5 weeks. It felt really great to have some shape again (I'm an A cup so I looked completely flat - some friends thought I had had a MX, in fact). The best part is when 1:30 rolls around - the time when I used to get in the car to drive to my appt. I just smile and keep working and it feels great!
-
Omg dawmson, that will be SO great, not having to leave work early to head over to the hospital!!! I can't wait. Two more weeks for me, so the end is in sight. Thanks also for the info on the boosts.
I'm olive skinned, tan easily, rarely burn, but rads made my breast bright red like a lobster. Its crazy looking. Also, swollen up much bigger than the other one. Super attractiveUnder my arm is much darker, more like purpley tan, and the raw area closer to my breast is dark red.
Today they called me at work to tell me a machine was down, they were all backed up, and did I still really want to come in...I was like, "YES!!" I really want to try and finish by Friday, Dec 16th.if they make me wait BC my skin gets too bad, that's one thing, but a delay because of machine failure? No way, man!
Nat -
I am excited to be getting my boost set up tomorrow. I am finished on 12/16, and will not miss that 2 hr. ride daily. Starting to think about the next chapter in my life.
-
Today was my first boost. They were running late and my 4:20 appointment didn't get started until 5:00. By the time I got dressed and out of there it was 5:40. I am usually home by then. Walked in the door and the dog jumped right on my breast.Yikes! What a day! It has been raining tons here and by the time I stopped for gas and got home it was 6:30. Almost bedtime :-)
The boost will be okay. It doesnt appear that it will hit my armpit nor my nipple. Both are sore, raw and oozing in spots so that is a plus. I swear that one of the positions feels like they are boring a hole in me. Kind of like holding a magnifying glass in the sun and focusing on one spot of your skin. It was hard not to squirm. Could have been my imagination but I don't think so.
Good news is only four more days. After everything I have been through, four more days is nothin'.
Good to hear that lots of you are nearing the end. We can do this!!!
