katiebug -- I wanted to write something here now that I am 2.5 weeks post BMX surgery.  I had a BMX on 11/14 and I really have not regretted it.  I could have saved my right breast since it was healthy, but this really feels right to me.  It took a lot of thinking, talking, asking around, and trying on each decision before I knew what was right for me.  It is your decision that you have to live with.  I will say that the recovery from BMX has not been easy for me.  I had a 2nd surgery to remove a hematoma the day after my BMX surgery.  I also had severe constipation 1 week after BMX and that was worse that the surgery (so be so so very careful with pain meds, if you take them).  It's a slow process and since I have 2 very young children I wanted this behind me  I didn't want something to show up years later and go through this again, when maybe I wouldn't be as lucky to have DCIS.  Not being able to pick up my kids for 4-6 weeks is really difficult not only on me, but also on the amount of help I have to ask for from my amazing family and friends.  I just learned I will have to ask their help again when I have the exchange surgery because that's another 4-6 weeks of no lifting (ugh!).  The numbness and weird sensations are not fun, but I think I will learn to live with it.  Yes, it would be much better in that regard if I had saved my right breast.  But then my breasts would not hae been as symmetrical, or look similar.  Bottom line for me was I didn't want to take the 15-20% chance of cancer recurring.

I feel for you with your difficult decision.  Try to think through all of it and I know you will make the right decision for you.  Best of luck.
