Hi all.  I have been dealing with what dr thought was cellulitis for 3 months now.  Have been on three different antibiotics regimines.  Nothing seems to be working.  Dr. says is a "mild" case so doesn't seem concerned.  Was on 4000mg Keflex for six weeks and doc kept telling me to keep taking it - in his words some people are on it forever.  Finally got fed up and went to new Infect. Disease doc, who said maybe the red, warm, swollen upper arm was due to an allergic recation to my sleeve. For a week i wore a liner under my sleeve and stopped the antibiotic but did not get better.  In fact it started getting worse and spreading around to the back of my arm now (although ever so slowly..).  I also have slight truncal lymphedema which has never gotten worse in ten years so I do nothing for it.  Have been reading too much online and now worried that the reason it is not responding is because its my TN cancer coming back.  Has anyone hear of this??

FYI I am now on 100 mg doxycyclene 2 x day - for 8 days now.  Arm not any better.  In fact it might even be worse.  Also, I have never had it spread out of my arm area.  Although the spread to the back of my arm is concerning me.

Does anyone have any ideas?  Even my new doc does not seem concerned...only me.  :(

 Thanks much!

To help you feel better have one of your doctors, (family doc even), run tumor markers.

It seems like if the antibotics were going to work, they would have by now. Keep in mind I am not a doctor.

Hope, some of the women on these boards have had a struggle with cellulitis or ?inflammation that has gone on for a long time. Most often it's breast cellulitis that can stay red, swollen and warm for a long time, but Cookiegal was on levaquin for months and months at one point for an atypical arm cellulitis--or is it? No one ever has figured it out for sure.

I do think you should see your oncologist, for reassurance and reassessment.

Ideally, a physician who is skilled in lymphedema should see you, but they're few and far between, and there's no speciality in lymphology, so they can come from many fields.

Does your lymphedema therapist think it's celllulitis?

Here's my personal opinion: when the lymphatics aren't working, there can be a low grade infection, or an inflammatory response that can linger. Kind of like chronic sinusitis--when there's no drainage, the situation can linger.

Personally, when there's a game plan, I feel so much better--so I think it's time to get a plan for this.

I had cellulitis on my breast and side right as I was supposed to have my exchange surgery.  After trying a couple oral antibiotics, I had an IV for ten days.  I am not sure at the moment what was in the IV, but it seemed to work.  We put the medicing in at night and I went about my normal routine with the iv thingie taped to my hand through out the day.  The IV antibiotics seemed to work for me.  My fever went down and my breast was no longer hot, although it did remain red for months.  Now it is still a little pinker than the other side.

    Good luck to you!

In reading your post and responses, I would certainly think another opinion on the matter is warranted.  I, myself, had cellulitis in late March, was put on oral antibiotics for 14 days.  After the 14 days, I could still feel pain in elbow and was put on another week and 1/2 of oral.  But, I really never 100% felt like it was gone even after 3 1/2 weeks of oral antibiotics.  About two months later, it reared it's ugly head again and this time in the hospital I was put on IV antibiotics.  They used Avelox and then I went home with another 3 weeks of IV antibiotics(Avelox).  That finally kicked it out of my system.  I have heard, too, that cellulitis can be very resistant, so maybe a substantial course of IV antibiotics might be the solution like it was for myself and AnnetteS.  Please let us know how things resolve.  Take care and once you get another opinion you will feel that much better. :)

One more thing to add after I just reread your post.  A mild case, I don't think any case of cellulitis is a mild case.  It most certainly is what prompted the start of my lymphedema.  Not only that, they worry very much about the infection going systemic.  So...Please get another opinion.

Hello; I was diagnosed with lymphedema, It turned out my implant ruptured, Have severe CC and was infected.  If you have implants, run to the Dr and get them checked.  Good Luck!

Hope, I want to second Anna in that it is a vicious cycle: infection damages lymphatics which then promotes more infection.

Hope you get some good medical help soon.

Hi, I had a rash that appeared on my breast last night. I just went to the ER today. I had a blood test and ultrasound the results of which were fine, and had IV and oral antibiotics. I go back tomorrow for followup. Diagnosis likely cellulitis.

I am glad I had the ultrasound to be on the safe side so perhaps you should ask for one too to ease your mind.
