back pain

Hi - about 3 weeks ago after a day of lots of housework, the right side of my mid back really hurt.  I chalked it up to overdoin git, but It hasn't gone away.  When I lay down, no pain.  When I get up, no pain.  But once I'm moving around and working it starts to hurt again and I'm getting a little worried.  Occasionally it's kind of a stabbing feeling but mostly just a dull ache.  I called the doc and they said to take a pain reliever for 2 weeks and see if that helps.  It does when I take it, but it comes right back.  heating pad helps too.  To me, you guys are more knowledgeable than the doc. Does it sound like it could be bone mets to you???

Do you have any pain in the buttocks or down the leg?  Sometimes a bulging disc can cause lots of pain.  I actually had a disc that ruptured and that was by far the most painful thing I have ever been through in my life!

I think if the pain goes away with rest then it's probably not mets but is muscle pain. Mets pain doesn't usually go away and gets worse as time passes (usually).

For me the pain was actually worse at rest. My ortho onc told me that's beause the tightness of the muscles around the bone keeps it from hurting.

Of course this is just my experience and we're all different.

Another point to add to Reesie's above is that unexlplained pain is what the docs worry about.  So, in your case, it sounds like you strained your back and it hasn't gone away yet, but hopefully will.  If the pain persists for another couple weeks, it is probably worth calling about, especially if it is only on one side and higher up in the back (say around the ribs or so).  Also, like Reesie, I found my cancer-related pains to be worse at rest.

Sounds like you are probably fine, but if it persists or gets worse, there is no harm in checking with your doctor to be sure.  Best of luck.

thank you Nancy.  I'm so appreciative of your response.  One minute I'm sure it's muscle, the next I'm sure it's bone.  I'll keep an eye on it and go get it checked out in a couple weeks if still there.  You're all very kind to respond to me.

    Pam
