    Hi Tabbi,

Here is an excellent web site, written by a Registered Dietician who is also a BC survivor:
    http://www.cancerrd.com/

Look it over. She discusses soy in terms of Estrogen, and says the same thing Rose said...no soy supplements. I have her cookbook and she also puts out a quarterly newsletter...very knowledgeable woman, and nothing extreme...just good, sound dietary principles.

    Hugs,
    Liza

You ladies just amaze me. I get so much information off this disscussion board. It took me 2 weeks to get up the nerve to ask the cereal question, but I just knew you ladies would have the answer. Thanks so much for your help.

    Tabbi,

Kashi Good Friends high fiber cereal has the most fiber that I've found to date. 2/3's of a cup gives you 12 grams of fiber. The soy is listed at the very bottom of the list.

Laura, vitamins and antioxidants go together. Some vitamins are antioxidants. C and E comes to mind. The problem is the wheat bran. We should be eating wheat after we take our meds. I try to wait two hours. I've read to offset the iron absorption problem from eating wheat bran we need to take Vitamin C right after eating breakfast.

So we have to wait a couple of hours after eating wheat to take any other vitamins and minerals so we're assured they're being absorbed. This is why I stopped eating wheat bran everyday. Oats don't have this problem.

Hey there ladies, so glad everyone is coming and getting involved in this thread!

Between my son's goat being sick and my arm low fat has not been my focus. I have been trying to do more planning but sometimes I will get tripped up by hungry kids.

I have been constant about the oats and that does help I lost 3 lbs this week, course I am on that yo yo right now they could come back next week.

I need to push my water intake more!

Low-fat is a challenge when you are trying to fill boys up. I had a light dinner last night - soup, salad, whole grain roll- and the next thing I know my husband is opening a can of sardines and eating them, then he has ice cream.

    He's growing but he's not a boy!

What's going on with that arm?

Sometimes when I see that tummy hanging over his pants I wonder!

I bought some Kashi/Friends cereal. It's good. I don't see any twigs, I guess they're all mushed up.

Hi Low fat, high fibre girls,

Mind if I join in?? I love oatmeal for breakfast, I can't live without it, not the instant one so much but the kind you cook on the stove. I mix 1/3 cup of bran buds into the oatmeal and add some fat free evaporated milk and splenda and voila!! Very tasty and lots of fibre.

    Enjoy your day, Tina

rose, that is so funny, i bought some Kashi/Friends yesterday too...went for the oats one, i find that a bowl of cereal is a great snack...

bring on the fiber and hold the fat!

Hi Laura, thank you for the compliment It is so good to "look" normal even if we don't exactly feel normal eh? It is All bran buds, I am not sure of the exact amount of fibre (threw away the box) but I do remember it being more fibre than any other cereal on the shelf, (at my grocery store anyhow)
I am working 3-11 today and just made myself a glorious supper to take with me. A beautiful chicken breast roasted in the oven with curry, tumeric, garlic and pepper and I sauteed 2 small onions in a little olive oil until soft and then added a package of raw baby spinach leaves and sauteed until they were wilted, little pepper and salt and voila!
I have fallen off the weight watcher wagon of late and today I am back on!! I went for a 3 monthly check up at the cancer center the other day only to find that I had put on about 12lbs of the 38lbs I lost on WW

    Anyhow......ONWARD!!

good low fat/high fibre vibes to all

Tina so glad you joined in. I have figured out that if I eat a serving of cereal I lose more than if I eat the food I fix, that way the family is happier. I can always eat a salad though too.

Tina - glad you've joined us.

I have much better weight success when I pack lunch. Otherwise I'm snacking on whatever is around.

    Thanks for the welcome ladies,

I did well staying on the WW wagon yesterday, I have a hard time when I work shift, I am hungry at 11.30 when I get home and want to shove the first thing I see into my mouth That is the hardest time for me.
Today I plan to make a nice piece of fish and some vegetables and brown rice, a couple of pieces of fruit and some vegetable juice.
Hope everyone is having a great day, it is sooo windy here in Ontario, but not too cold. It was 62 degrees yesterday and thursday we are expecting a decent snowfall, weird weather.

    Enjoy your day, Tina

The first days back on the wagon are the hardest. Sometimes I chew gum just to keep my mouth busy.

Found a really good article about low-fat diets and bc in the health section today. I had not realized a prior study had been done on women who had bc. They had some success with low-fat. The recent study where the results were mixed was in women w/o bc. Since I'll never be in that category I'm more interested in the first study, that I hadn't known about.

Interesting article Rose, thanks for posting.

I had a cake and schocolate week, after my daughters 14th birthday, to much of it was around and I gladly volunteered to eat, ha.
I did not walk (appointments and excuses)and got either a stomach bug or a bad gastritis. Happened after I ate my beloved blue berries and guess what, haven't had any since last week. Luckily I did not gain weight eating cake but feel guilty since I didn't eat healthy either.

First, welcome Tinairene, great hair I must say too.

Cowgirl, congrats on the loss of 3 pounds, yeahhhhh.

Rose, did you mention about Tomatoesauce?? I use Contadina out of the can, has no fat, but a little cornsirup, better than any jar. Also my Grandma used to make tomatoe sauce out of tomatoe paste, I just tried it and it was good.

I just started supplements today (Cats Claw) and will try Turmeric with lunch. Femara on Sunday for the first time.
The good news, I am not as hungry since my histerctomy. For some reason I thought "true" menopause must be like pregnancy, the hunger hits you and you gain weight, so far so good but there is still Femara to come.

Today I go to lunch with hubby, chinese buffet, I will pig out on broccoli, which I always do, nothing better.. yumm.

Laura, I love Fennel, haven't eaten it since I came to the States in 1990, haven't seen it either, where do you get it?

    Have a great Tuesday

thank you ladies for some tasty inspiration to my cooking...

tina, the spices and onions with chicken..very tasty..i put them on baby red potatoes and slow roasted, yum!

mary, yummy zucchini..add a little cheese to anything and it becomes edible. low fat parmesan is easy to fit into my fat grams for the day.will add to my menu tonight, thank you!

cowgirl, lots of strength to you tomorrow with your mri.

rose, don't know about yours but my kashi good friends
    oats were total cardboard taste.

calico, i find fennel next to the kale, bok choy in the vege section and use the seeds from the spice section.

it seems that now that i have found a good diet routine i am now finding the spices to make it tasty. cumin, curry, fennel, cinnamon, and of course garlic.

lots said about mediterranean diet these days. a mediterranean plate has a little taste of meat or fish and big helpings of salad, beans or starch and vegetables...
    it is about portion size.

busy day here as i get ready to leave the left coast and head to right coast to catch up with boyfriend who is there on business...six days at the hyatt at grand central station...nice!...might even have a green beer on friday, happy st. patty's day.

i will take laptop but don't know how much i will be able to catch up.

i intend to have a slice when i am in the big apple. haven't had pizza for months and i thought it would be a nice normal thing to do, walk up and order a piece of pie!

    and a bagel or two.

other than that i will stick as close as i can to the diet unless an incredible dessert menu passes my way...

spring is really just around the corner now and then we turn to low fat, high fiber and exercise and those extra pounds are going to vanish!

love and peace to all...keep the fires burning here!

    Hi everybody,

Re: The fennel talk...I adore fennel. I first had it 36 yrs ago in Italy and loved it and came back to the states and figured I'd probably never be able to have it again (at that time, it wasn't anywhere in stores here!) I'm SO glad to see it in grocery stores nowadays. I'm in the South, and Publix carries it (for those of you also in the South). I found a good recipe with raw fennel...the ancient Romans used to eat raw fennel, sliced navel oranges (minus the skin), a drizzle of olive oil and black pepper. I added Romaine lettuce, sliced red onion and slivered almonds and instead of olive oil, I used Balsamic Rice Vinegar, and it was DELICIOUS!!!

    Here's to good eating, girls!!

Enjoy the trip Laura, tell us about every bite of N.Y. pizza. I know the secret ingredient to that pizza. I watched them make it from scratch. Olive oil. That's why it's so messy, and gooood.

I can see that I need to make myself another healthy pizza again.

Okay-maybe someone can help me with this. I have a part-time embroidery business at home-no problem as I don't have much food in my house. But I also clean houses part time. Today, my customer had a bowl of Hershey's dark chocolate kisses just sitting there begging me to partake.
    Of course, I partook-is that a word?
What would you intelligent gals do in this case? I did cover them up with a magazine, but they still kept calling to me.

    I bet they were good.

I arrive at work with a bag of snacks. I parcel them out as the day goes by.

One or two kisses won't do you in, but if you do it at every house you go to it might be a problem.

I have a friend of inspects home day care. She says by the end of the day she's floating away - every person offers her a cup of tea when she gets there.

This is a temptation I am not good at Chocolate free and clear! I eat SF FF pudding at the house when I am ready to splurge but here I would maybe carry some hard choc candy along with me. Something lowfat, and hard helps slow me down. I used to use cream savers of some sort for that.

Okay I am off to MRI! Finally something is happening!

ugh my temptation is not sweets but salt...when i'm at work at someone breaks out say, girlscout cookies, like today i make myself eat a piece of fruit ...I keep thinking if I fill myself up with good stuff there won't be anymore room. Well, to be honest, it doesn't work that well as I usually succomb BUT I do get my daily dose of fruit. Hey sometimes you gotta settle for second best (maybe not perfect)!

I cut down a lot of sweet and I do not miss it as I thought I would be. I am a sucker for salty stuff too. I brush my teeth or use herbal mint throat spray if I think I will get into real trouble and it helped at least for few hours, O,K just for one hour.

I had my cholesterol tested again last week and my numbers are getting even better. The longer on this diet, the better it gets.

The funny part about it is that I'm eating everything that was once thought to be killer foods...oils, nuts, and dark chocolate everyday. Not too long ago I wouldn't go near an avocado or olive oil.

This diet works, or maybe we should call it healthy eating cause as a diet goes, I can't lose a pound. Too many carbs I guess with all the wheat, oats and fruit. On the good side, I'm not putting on any weight to speak of.

Are you ladies getting your cholesterol tested?

Just had mine tested...doc says it is 'mildly elevated' at 5.6.....and not to worry - it's only mild. Yikes! I thought nowadays a score of 4 was thought to be normal....any input?

My cholestrol was declared wonderful. I don't know if that's the tamoxifen or just genetics.

My PCP, who is about 5'2" and 110 pounds says her numbers are high, and she thinks genetics are an influence.

I do think it can be hard to lose weight on a high-fiber healthy diet. If you get into it then your conscious of all the stuff you 'should' eat, and it's hard to fit it all in.

Rosemary - I am definetly on the Kashi Good Friends bandwagon. I had the cinamon-raisin crunch (with twigs) and liked it. I'm going back for another box this weekend.
