Taxotere/Cytoxan ~ Nausea/Vomiting
I had my first tx of TC last week. They put Aloxi in at the time and that lasted four days. I had no real nausea so I didn't take the Compazine but I was vomiting every 2-3 hours until I could finally keep one down. My question is how long does the nausea typically last ~ a few days? ~ longer? ~ the entire 21 days until the next tx? I stayed well-hydrated up to now and I don't want to lose ground. My poor family! With Thanksgiving next week!

Hi LynnCS, I am sorry you are having such an awful time with your first round. If it helps, the first round of TC was the worst for me in terms of side effects and the rest were better. I did not have nausea as long as you have had it. If I were you, I would call my MO to let him know and see what he can do. I had a fair amount of nausea after the first round. When I told my MO, he added emend to the infusions. It really helped. Most of us feel pretty good by the second week. I have not heard of anyone remaining nauseous for the entire 21 days. Good luck. I hope you will feel better soon.

LynnCS, I start TC next week. But my Dr. gave me 2 RX's for nausea, one in pill form, one in suppository form (in case I couldn't keep pills down) You might want to ask your Doctor about it. I'm so sorry you are feeling so awful.

Thanks for your reply. I saw my MO and he's prescribed Emend for the next treatments. Did you have any side effects from Emend? The pharmacist told me "it can cause upset stomach" LOL! I just stared at him and said "You're kidding! Anti-nausea medicine that causes upset stomach? What's the point of taking it then, especially at this price?" Haha! So I don't know ... On the plus side I feel much better the second week and enjoyed our Thanksgiving dinner .. tho' my taste buds were not cooperating. Hope you are doing well.

they cause constipation-maybe that's what you're helpful pharmacist was trying to say

I had no side effects from Emend and only threw up a few times in all of my chemo. Like maybe 3 times total. Now sometimes they start by putting the Emend in your infusion, so ask about that. There are specific instructions for the Emend, so read all of it. I think you will do great!
Now don't get me wrong - I sure didn't feel like dancing - but i feel it really helped with nausea and vomiting and made the chemo easier than I had anticipated.

I was on Cytoxan by itself and had vomiting, but not too bad. The compazine helped. Now I am om Taxotere and it sucks! I have the shakes really bad, water retention in my feet and legs, mouth sores, breathing problems, bruises and sores all over my legs and thighs and ankles, hair loss, and weak muscles in my legs. I also have chemo brain big time. It affected my work so I am on medical leave. I can't drive because i get lost, so I am basically homebound. I am now calling it taxotereibble! But I have had 5 drugs since March 2010. The more types of chemo you have, the worse the side effects are.

There are so many meds better then compazine, it made me tired and gave me the jitters for days. I prefer zofran or kytril. They do not make you sleepy or give the jitters. They can also give them IV before the chemo and prevent the vomiting. The emend constipated me, then the violent diarrhea from the taxotere caused problems you don't want to hear about.
Are you getting the neuropathy from the taxotere? I have founf gabepetin very helpful for that. Ask for it if you need it.

I do have the neuropathy but last time it resolved between doses. I expect that will happen again. I did ice diligently. I initially used Zofran but switched to Compazine to ward off the incessant hiccups. It worked, but the nausea built up. I am back to Zofran and doing much better. I am also taking Aleve and Claritin as the Neulasta monster is doing its trick again. I'm hopeful that today will be the turning point. I can't imagine how people go to work while, they are doing this. I rarely, if ever missed a day at work but this would have done it. I am grateful to be retired.
I'm working hard to keep it in the moment. I'm dreading infusion 3'and 4'but determined to go through with it. This really sucks. Big hugs for all my fellow sufferers( warriors). We will prevail.
Thank you for your support and very good advice
