Sick of pink rant-and its only Oct. 4th!
Hello everyone (and please excuse the rant),
I know it's breast cancer awareness month, BUT I am already sick of Pinktober. Am I the only one who feels this way? Yesterday morning, I opened my door to find a pink newspaper on the doorstep (a shade the makers of Pepto-Bismo would be proud of). Inside the paper every advertiser has jumped on the bandwagon of supporting BC research -which is a GOOD thing! However, does anyone ever check to see if these companies actually contribute to BC research, or is it just a tasteless publicity stunt? I know when I go to the store, I'll be bombarded with pink ribbons on every can, box, and bottle of ________________ (fill in name of product here). How many of these companies are just using the pink banner to sell their product line? Are there rules out there keeping these companies honest? Is there a list out there showing which companies are true supporters? Or can anyone slap a pink ribbon on their product and SAY they are contributors? Sorry to sound so cynical, but I suspect there is a lot of false advertising out there. I would rather give my business to a company that actually contributes real money to this cause. Until then, I'll be looking forward to November. Again, sorry to sound so cynical.

You're certainly not the only one.

I couldn't agree more. Since when did diseases become holidays? I was diagnosed Oct. 3 and I'm almost embarrassed, the pink thing trivializes a very serious diseae-enough already.

sjguillaume,
I read your blog. WOW!!! Couldn't have said it better. I would love to see Komen's response to your blog. It would be nice if they had a portion of all those donations available to help people with their medical bills. I did NOT appreciate the Dallas cowboys cheerleaders with their pink dancing costumes on TV. That money could have been spent to help real people with bc. Komen Inc., what say you????

@every8th: I'm working on a blog about the cowboys/komen publicity stunt this week. I was also not amused. Yes, that money should have been used for real breast cancer patients instead of more shameless promotion. I completely agree! Thanks for reading my blog. @spunky: yes, when did diseases become holidays? Great question. I also feel the pink trivializes our circumstances.
