I need your stories!
First, I want to start by saying it has been so long since I've been on the boards at BCO, and I am still amazed at the growth and support that takes place within these walls.
I hope you are all continuing to thrive in the face of cancer.
I have a request for you...please pass it on to anyone that you feel has something to contribute.
I am working on a book (not specific to Breast Cancer, but to all cancers) titled,
"GOOD FOR YOU!!!! and other stupid things people say when you have cancer"
The chapter overview roughly goes something like this:
- Foot in Mouth - where people mean well but still say something dumb... but you don't hate them because they truly mean well.
- Scratch your head -did they really just say that?
- Downright Stupid-- the worst of the worst.
It comes together in the end offering laughter and hope, and there is also a quick tip guide for how to respond to the FSS (Frequent Stupid Statements)
Please email all one liners, quotes, and stories to me at bethpsilvermand@gmail.com with the word STUPID in the subject line. If your content is chosen for the book you will be contacted with all the fun legal release forms, and if you choose so, your name will be included with the book's contributors. The process of gathering all of the content is long and arduous (especially since we are looking for a broad range of people) so please be patient.
I appreciate any input. Lord knows people say some really stupid things when we get cancer. I remember we used to have an entire thread here that talked about the stupid things people say.
Love to all for a wonderful holiday season filled with family, friends, and love.

Hi Beth!
So happy to see you posting. I was thinking of you just a few days ago and wondered how you were.
Good luck in your new endeavor--I will be emailing you with my contributions
Big hugs! -
Great idea, Beth! I don't have anything especially juicy to contribute, having received just the "usual" dumb remarks. The only ones that really got to me (and still do) are the people who say things like "Oh, I know just how you feel...I had quite a scare with breast cancer once too!" HUH????!
This isn't helpful to you either, but it's a real gem that I recall from that thread we had going. One woman was telling her MIL that she needed to have both breasts removed and the MIL said "Well, it's not like you were going to be a stripper or anything." Okaaaaaaay.
Good luck with the book, my chica. I'll be watching your posts on fb.
~Marin
