Hi, Marianna, and welcome!  Thanks for asking about the kid on the bike.  I think and hope he was OK.  There was nothing about the accident in my town's weekly newspaper, and I'm sure that if he had been seriously injured, there would have been.  My sympathies on the PF - I had a horrible case a couple years ago (brought on by trying to ramp up my running too quickly after treatment).  I spent many a morning rolling a frozen water bottle under my left foot . . . ice and massage simultaneously.

It is WAY too early for snow anywhere except maybe the highest mountains.  So why were there big fat flakes falling when I arrived at my hotel in Connecticut last night?

(This morning I went for a run along a shoulderless, sidewalkless road.  Not ideal, but once I got out of the land of office parks, it was very pretty.  I was hoping to find something that would take me off the road, and was thrilled to spot what looked like a park.  It was actually a summer camp, closed for the season.  Hmmm . . . an abandoned camp, in the near-dark, three days before Halloween.  Would YOU have run in there?  Me, I decided to stick with the road, thank you very much.)

Finished 5K without crying, falling or puking. Son was going pretty slow. Let him beat me at the end but we both know who is faster still. It was cold and raining but changed over to snow at the end. We both had a good time. He likes the donuts at the finish.

Now need to figure out something to keep me motivated over the winter.

    Congrats Marie!!

Wonder if there's a Turkey Trot or New Year's Day race near you?  Or, perhaps you can try a "virtual" 5K, like this one: http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/virtual-race.asp?r=95

    lewing,

I feel like a doofus, too, whenever I fall!   lol

I know I should run in the morning, before I can think of a reason to cancel, but...  well, it is so much COLDER, and it 's hard to get myself going when it's COLD...  :(

I run with my husband, but he runs faster than me, so I feel like I am holding him back.  He also lacks the discipline to keep a regular schedule.  I am hoping that ONE of us will say:  Hey, let's get outside and run...    If he doesn't, then I will...   We are going to run a 15K/5K on Nov. 19th in Wilmington.  I know I probably won't be able to do 15K, but I have done a 5K before.

I pushed out the door in the sunshine this afternoon and made it past the urge to turn back at 3k and made it 5k. I was at my best 5k time as I passed the 4k point, but the whole 5k wasn't my worst time either, and I still have a lot of pain in my hip muscle/ligament stuff. Acupuncture and massage are helping but very little. I am starting to think that this whole-body cramping I have is the wearing off of the effectiveness of the valium I've been taking for the stress. I guess that's one more medical conversation to add to the list!

    Hi ladies!

Managed to complete the dublin marathon last weekend, marathon No 2!! Not just a one-timer!! Boy was this one tough!!

I started out really fresh & confident, was making 10-minute miles for the first 13 miles and really thought I might do it in 4hrs 30.  Then things started to get tough, the weather took a turn for the worse & I got a horrible pain down the outer aspect of my left leg.  I tried walking for a while, but it was actually more painful to walk on the leg than to run, so back I went to running, albeit at a much slower pace, averaging 11.5 min miles.... My fiancee & sister were there to support me at mile 15 & 20, which was such a great morale boost.....then at mile 22 the heavens opened & it lashed rain!!  I got soaked to the bone - runners & socks saturated!! At mile 23 I wanted to quit & cry but the wonderful words of encouragement from strangers en-route kept me going.  I finally managed to cross the finishing line in 4hrs 47 mins - a whole 3 minutes faster than last year!!  So that made me smile!!

Its funny, I think I value this marathon more than my first one last year because I found it so much harder.  I have made a good recovery in the past couple of days and while last year I did not want to run for months afterwards, I definitely dont feel that way this year & will probably try to keep up the short runs over the winter.

Keep up the good work ladies, I love the positive motivational stories on this thread!!

TreadSoftly, that was so wonderful to read! I could just feel the struggle and the digging deep and the pulling out of it. Congratulations!!!

I'm always amazed at how much the cheerleaders help me too.

    Love the run reports!

TreadSoftly, you are my (s)hero! Especially since your pacing is what I hope to do for my first marathon in 10 weeks... your report made it very realistic for me, and all the more exciting! Congrats!!

And speaking of first marathons, my husband's is this Sunday...

TreadSoftly, congrats to you!!  I'm so excited for you!

Orangemat, is your husband running NYC?  I am, too -- that is, if my knees hold up.  It will be my fifth marathon.  I'm so much slower now than last year, after bc, four surgeries, three months of chemo, and going into training with a minimal mileage base as a result.  If I can just finish at all, I guess that's all I can hope for!

Yes, citykitty, he's running NYC. Best of luck to you! Oh, and another NJ person! May I ask where you are in the state?

My husband made up a set of instructions for me for Sunday, where to drive, what subways to take and when to try to spot him along the route. He's in the last wave start, so I don't think I need to get to the city before 10am. My biggest fear (greater than his regarding finishing, I'd bet) is that I won't find parking in the garage by Port Authority.

As for my running, I only did 4 miles yesterday, nice and easy, as prescribed by my training schedule. I have a long run of 18 on tap for tomorrow, so I didn't run on Wednesday and I'm not supposed to run again today. I feel like I've been in taper all week!

I'm right across the Hudson from NYC, in Hoboken.  Where are you?  And which race are you training for?  (Sorry, I've been away from this thread for a while and might have missed it!)

I'm in the last wave, too...10:40 Blue.  Are you going to the Expo with your DH?  When?  I'm planning to go today -- probably morning/midday.

I took the day off from work to get myself mentally ready.  It's been a  majorly stressful week at work, PLUS a big appt yesterday with my PS, PLUS marathon taper madness....Eeeeeekkk!!

I'm in Fair Lawn, virtually in the backyard of Garden State Plaza and the Saddle River County Park bike paths. I'm training for the Disney World Marathon on January 8th (my first). I thought I'd have to forfeit it due to needing to have revision surgery, but I'm postponing surgery until March and so I've just jumped into an 18 week training program at about the halfway point. My husband has been training with Team For Kids with several of his coworkers, so they're going to the expo today (he works in Jersey City).

Small world!  Of course, JC is adjacent to Hoboken...and my DH has a cousin in Fair Lawn.  We just moved to NJ a few years ago.  I didn't know about the bike paths!  Will have to look that up!  Are they good for running?

I'm planning a revision surgery, too...that's what yesterday's PS appt was about.   I think I saw you over on the picture forum...will have to go back there and look for you.  Good luck with your surgery and your marathon training.   My SIL, who lives in Fla., is training for the same race, as are a couple of friends in my women's running club!  (You should come join us for a Saturday morning run!  We have a website and a Facebook page -- Hoboken Elysianettes.)

Good luck to your husband on Sunday!

Nope, I'm not on the picture forum. Though I do worry every time my PS takes my photos that they'll somehow wind up on FB....

I'll look for your club on FB. I belong to the North Jersey Masters running club (they also have a page), and hopefully my husband will join as of the end of the year.

As for the bike paths in the park, I can honestly say that I live there, they're that wonderful. So much green and nature, right in the middle of over-congested suburbia. About 16 miles of interconnected paved paths, perfect!

Yeah!!!  I ran a real run today...my usual daily run...5K...at my usual pace (about 6mph...or 10:00min/mi).  I am 4 weeks post op as of yesterday...  I don't have the energy to run on the days I work yet, as I normally do, but little steps are fine as long as I am moving forward.  I want to thank you all for your inspiration!  When I see that you all are running...I remember that I will keep improving...  Thank you all for sharing!

Woohoo CLC, that's great! See, the body does remember, it just needs some time to recover from what was done to it. Patience really is the hardest part.

Thanks, orangemat!  I have so much patience with others, but not so much with myself...I am trying...(and succeeding)...:)

Yessss Claire!  So happy for you!!  You and I were both October surgery girls and I can appreciate what 4 weeks post-op really means.  Mine was a lumpectomy +SNB and I started running again (if you can call it that) a little past 2 weeks afterwards.  I need 2 sports bras and the support of the crook of my arm, but I am proud to be out there again.

Indeed, it is tough to be patient.  I was feeling quite discouraged today with some neck pain (slept goofy) and failing endurance, but dug deep and pushed through for a total of about 4 miles run/1 mile walked.  Of course I felt awesome when I got home and took stock!

And I agree about the inspiration y'all provide.  Thanks too for offering a "safe place" to cheer about what I consider progress (or at least, preventing a backslide).  :)

Claire, you got this!  And it's a beautiful day here in NY :)  I'm in Rochester where are you?

You post also brings up a "dumb" question on my part.  Is it OK to run on consecutive days?  I was told it should be every other day but some days.... I want to get out there again!!  Opinions from the more experienced people here..??

I am right near the PA, NJ, NY border.  And it is a beautiful day!

Everything I have read says 1-2 rest days per week.  I started running a year ago and run 4 to 5 days per week.  I have been doing high intensity exercise for 5 years.  Throughout that time, I have always been sure to have at least one rest day per week and 2 or 3 times per year, I take a rest week.  (I don't know if surgery recovery counts for that, though!!)

LOL you know that's *barely* upstate to those of us waaaay up here right? :)  You live in a beautiful part of NY though!

So glad you got that four miles in!  And thanks for the info on rest days.  When I was doing Couch to 5K, I would simply alternate running days with other cross-training type stuff like group classes at the gym or whatnot.  By gym membership is on hold so I've been looking at what I can do on my "off" days.  But maybe I don't need as many off days as I thought.

I know some of you are connected to the NYC marathon in some way or another.  Thinking you all today.......

I am 2.5 hrs from the city...and avoid travelling south at all costs.  To the rest of the country, if I simply said NY, they'd have the absolute wrong impression.  When I lived in Arkansas and said I was from NY, they always assumed the city.  But here, there are miles and miles of trees, lakes and rivers, so I learned I am an upstater for all practical purposes.

I thought the Hal Higdon plans had runs on several days in a row...no?

CLC is right, see Hal Higdon novice-to-half 12-week program http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/novice.htm

The Jeff Galloway 23-week novice-to-half training program is http://espnwwos.disney.go.com/media/ewwos/pdf/rundisney/Galloway/Tink12HALFbeg.pdf  and basically goes Tues/Thurs/weekend.

I'm lucky if I can get out that much but I appreciate it when I can.

orngemat - what a beautiful day in ny.  hope your husband did well.  i am so envious of the 45,000 people who ran.

thinking about next year but looks hard to get into.  maybe the marine corp instead.  maybe i should just get through the next surgery and run more than 3 miles before having such big plans.
