Help with mattress
We are looking into new mattresses. SOme people have said that they felt night sweats were worse on pliiowtops as the extra foam traps the heat. MIne are bad enough already! Has anyone had any experience with the SleepNumber beds? I would think that whatever they use to trap the air would make them hotter.
I'm about to get a waterbed casue they were always freezing cold!
Thanks!

There is a new product on the market called Cool Foam or something like that. It is a memory foam mattress that will actually cool you down.
I bought a regular memory foam mattress pad and then put a regular plush thick mattress pad on top of it. My problem is that my hips hurt so bad at night that I need something to relieve the stiffness of our regular mattress.

I tend to sleep at the edge of my mattress. I guess it is cooler at the edge because sometimes I hang over the edge to get cool. Strange? Anyway, when I was looking at mattresses, I didn't like the sleep number mattress because it is framed in wood. So when you are on the edge, sleeping or sitting, it felt as hard as a rock....plus, I didn't feel like getting splinters...lol!
I have a firm LATEX mattress and love, love, love it. Also have a firm latex pillow. -
another thought....Do you have a ceiling fan above your bed? I do. I use it EVERY.SINGLE.DAY for the last dozen or so years!

I am a qualified "Sleep Expert". Seriously. From the job I had I had to get qualified. The newer latex matts are way better than foam. Foam are closed cells that trap heat. You can't get bed bugs in foam as they can't channel. Hotels use foam a lot and some peope LOVE them. I used to until I got old enough for hot flashes. So don't let anyone talk you in to foam.
The Obus and others like Tempurpedic are expensive and the people that buy them swear by them, but they have to cause they spent so much! If you have any body weight at all, lie in the mattress you think you want for at LEAST 5 minutes (10-15 is better) and they try to roll over. With foam you sink down and it suspends you, true. But that creates a "nest" that you have to crawl to get out of. As you get older, the spring coil mattresses are WAY easier to turn over in and get out of.
Pocket coils aren't great for very heavy people as we can actually separate the coils with, say, an elbow when turning over!! They are not enough support for heaviery couples.
A normal helio-coil matt that originally costs $2,000 but is on sale for $1,000 would be perfect!!! Don't get a $1,000 matt/box as it will only last you about 2 years. Get an expensive matt/box on sale.
Also, make sure you get the boxspring that matches the matt you buy. The boxspring takes 60% of your body weight and is like the shock absorbers on a car. If you need a new mattress, you REALLY need a new boxspring for sure!!!
Number beds; never experienced them, but to me they'd be like an air mattress and pretty firm no matter how you changed the number! You can have a limp air mattress, but when you lie on it, your weight spreads out and firms up the matt. Also, wouldn't you want the same number each night? A good mattress will give you that every nigtht.
The viscous elastic they put into the box tops of matts now, is buried further down to prevent you getting too hot. Get a matt made out of the same material as sports jerseys (which are made to wick the moisture away from your body). The box top 4" is to cradle your body. You don't flip matts anymore so what will happen is that you will develop a nest on your side and your DH one on his side. That is not the mattress collapsing, but reacting! If you DON'T get the nest impressions, then your mattress is too firm!
Good luck!!!

I LOVE my Tempurpedic! I've had it for 11 years, and loved it so much I bought a new one for the guest room.
I got it when I had a shoulder reconstruction and had to get comfortable in uncomfortable positions. The Tempurpedic mattress completely supports you without any hard spots, no matter which way you may lay.
As for hot flashes and night sweats - I put a thin mattress pad directly on top of the Tempurpedic mattress and that seemed to solve the problem of the mattress getting too warm.

Our bed is a platform bed with no box springs. There are wooden slats underneath. Thinking about putting a sheet of plywood on top of them.

I just purchased a Saatva Bed last month. My hub and I are very pleased with it. I get hot flashes and this bed hasn't seemed "hot" at all. Our old bed was over 10 years old and my hips and lower back would ache when I woke up in the mornings. After my last surgery in September, I was sleeping in my recliner. When I made the switch back to bed, it lasted one night! My back and hips hurt so much and my left leg felt numb. I went right back to the recliner until our new bed was delivered. It took one week to be delivered. My back and hips are now happy campers.

I was so happy to find this thread this morning
I have been doing mattress research for the past several months. I was thinking the sleepnumber bed would be my choice, but my DH thinks it's just a fad! So we checked out the Saatva mattress web site. DH says order it today!! So happy to finally make a decision on a much needed new mattress. Thank You for all the information!!

I sure hope you like it as much as we do!
I especially like that they are Made in the USA and a "green" product.
I was looking at the Sleep Number beds too. There were too many "ifs" about it-leaks, dial issues, stiffness down the middle of the bed in between the air chambers, among others. What finally made my decision against it were reviews from people stating that the bed could lose air during the night and need refilling. UGH! The last thing I need is to be messing with the air on my bed after finally getting to sleep!
