Beautiful picture, Michelle... I agree, you definitely have a real talent for photography!

    Apple,

I'm with you in that I really love to cook but don't really like the day to day of what to make given who likes/doesn't like what.... That really puts a crimp in things... Much more fun to go with what sounds good...

Carberry beat me to it with the black olive 'finger nails'! We also used to do the same thing with Bugles snack food..... Too funny!

    Debbie (aka Dolly)

I hope you have a great time at your party!!! Sounds like your costume will just hit it out of the park!!

    Kay,

They may not have all of the details figured out yet BUT they have given it some thought!! I think that's the best we can expect at their age.....

By the end of rads I definitely felt like I was crossing the finish line but just limping across.... I was just sooooooo exhausted.. It took a few weeks even after I was finished before I felt my strength returning.... The effects of radiation are cumulative... They reach a peak and then, over time, diminish! How long varies and is as different as we all are.....

    Wishing you the best!

Chabba:  Would you mind sharing your clam chowder recipe?  I have one I haven't made in years that is heavy cream & lots of butter, but Houston isn't cold enough yet for standing at the stove very long.  It's nuts to turn the A/C down just so you can turn the oven on.

Debbie, I wish! I have 2 more weeks of rads, 10 left. I will get a pic of DD in her costume for sure. The wagon is at her friend's house. I'll ask DD to get a pic of all the girls with it. It should be a hoot!

Minus Two......I'll try.  My recipe has been developed over time since I've been cooking at the Senior Center and makes enough for 25 to 30 people.  I've never written it down, don't measure anything.  I'll try to put approximate amounts for serving four but adjust to taste.

4 strips of bacon, julienned - butter - 1/2 small onion, finely chopped - 1 clove garlic, minced - flour to make a roux

1 or 2 medium potatoes, cubed into 1/2 to 1 inch pieces cooked in broth from clams and 1 bottle clam juice with water to cover until barely fork tender, drain and save liquid

3 cans chopped clams or 1/2 lb or so chopped fresh clam meat

milk, heavy cream, Worcestershire sauce, dry sherry, minced dill or parsley for garnish

Cook bacon till crisp in heavy soup pot, remove and pour off all but 2 to 3 tbs grease, add equal amount butter.  When butter melts add flour to make a roux and cook on low for a minute or two.  Add potato water and cook to thicken.  Using about 2 parts milk to one part cream, thin to desired soup consistency.  Should be fairly thick.  Heat to serving temperature.

Season to taste with salt, Worcestershire and sherry.  Add reserved bacon and clams, heat again. Raw clams will cook in just a minute or so.  Garnish as desired.

    Chabba,

Thanks for the recipe! I'm going to give that a try! Sounds delicious.... Today would actually be a really good soup day! Dreary and COLD here in NY.... Drizzly with snow mixed in... Yuck!

You can't beat clam chowder for cold weather, maybe that's why it comes from New England.  It would probably be considered sacrilege to use the kind of fresh clams I do - our local razor clams.  Wonderful flavor and tender though.

Carrie - I'm still laughing at that picture!!!

Chabba - thanks for the clam chowder recipe, I need to make some!

    Deborye- great video!!!

OK, now a vent...how ridiculous that Komen is not postponing tomorrow's walk in Boston.  We're having a freakin' nor'easter and they are proceeding with the event, regardless of the weather. Damned irresponsible!  We have decided to "sleep in" for the cure and meet later for dinner wearing our team shirts.  I can't ask anyone to drive to Boston for this event when race officials are sending out emails saying that parts of the parking lot and the walk route will likely be flooded.

So we are ready...new electric snowblower (which will be fine if we don't need to get out before the power comes back on; snow shovel, ice melt, groceries, marine battery charging, lasagna and chili in the works, firewood, and apple pie. If the power goes out, we can reheat the food in a cast iron skillet over the fireplace. Now I can just hope that the storm blows out to sea and doesn't blast us with the 6-10" that they are predicting. Geez, it's still October!!!

I used to be able to buy big cans of clams at Sam's (poetic - huh) but haven't found any in quite a while.. maybe Costco will have them.

i love clam chowder and make a recipe similar to Chabba's but don't trust fresh clams in KS.

I guess I am quite the weather maker...LOL!!!

We moved from MO to my daughter's in Acton, MA and we have a tornado warning that is worse than anything we ever experienced in MO, then we go to FL and it rains for three days, and now this late October nor'easter...oh my, what frightful weather!  To be fair, the first October we were in MO, there was a snowstorm in mid-October.  I think we got more than a foot of snow and some people were without power for two weeks.  I really do hate snow!!!  If this is a sign of the winter to come, I'm in big trouble.

I'm sure there will be some interesting pictures tomorrow morning!

    Michelle

The Komen folks finally got some smarts - the race has been officially cancelled for "safety" reasons.  I was beginning to question their intelligence!

The lasagna is in the oven and the chili is in the pot.  I think we have passed Winter Storm Preparedness 101.

    Oh holy cow!

I guess I am living in a bubble today... Had no idea that you all North and East of me are having such a big storm!

Sounds like you have done all you can do to prepare! Keeping my fingers crossed that you you all keep power and that the storm totals aren't what they are predicting....

    Michelle,

I am in the "I hate snow club", too.... As far as I'm concerned, it can snow on Christmas Eve and that's it... Good to hear that the race people came to their senses!!

Yes, Seaside!  The "perfect" snow season would be 3" between midnight and 6 a.m. on Christmas morning.  That's it...that's all I need to feel "the season"!!!

I agree on the snow, just like to put on some clothes and go out without bundling up, shoveling, scraping and freezing, just to go to the store.

My daughter and I live in the same state, me in upstate, and her in the big city.....she is getting a snowstorm and we went on a sunset cruise on the boat last night...how weird is that.

Sometimes the only thing a snowstorm is good for is an excuse to stay home, bundled under a blanket with a good book or movie and some warm comforting food.

I completely agree on the snow.  I don't know how much snow we got, we didn't get 4 inches, but do have accumulation, and it is still coming down.  If a lot of it didn't come down as rain, it would have been a huge snowstorm here, supposed to get a foot in the Poconos.  That is a shame about Michelle's power, I hope it doesn't stay out long.  Your parents are brave Joyce.  I picked my DD up from her dance class at 1 and that is the last time I went out today.  I wish I didn't have my right arm wrapped in all these bandages.  It would have been a good day to bake cookies.  DH just called and is just on his way home from work.  I hope it's not too slippery out there.

Chaba:  Thanks for the clam chowder recipe.  Houston actually got down to 50 last night - cold for us.  It's often still 80 degrees.  Wonder if I should get out the blankets yet?  Thinking of all you ladies in the snow storm.

Met my SIL at Grand Lux Cafe for dinner before a concert.  Wonderful Salmon Piccata with mushrooms, artichokes, lemon & capers on rice with crusty sourdough bread.  Huge portions and lunch prices before 5pm.  We ordered at 4:57.

We still don't have power, so we are at our daughter's house.  They have power, heat and water - all good things...LOL!  We've been in this little house for 4 1/2 months and so far we've had 4 power outages.  Not a good record at all!  We got about a foot of snow.  My son lives a bit north of us and he says there's 18 inches in his driveway.  He doesn't have power, either, but his landlord has a generator so he'll be ok...as soon as she gets home from Boston.  She couldn't make it home last night because the weather was so bad.  There are trees down everywhere, including across the deck of our other daughter's house in Acton, MA.  What a big mess!

Apple- I love the shrimp nails and I LOVE that it's a girl doing it!  Some would think ewww gross, but hey funny is funny!

Kay- I agree I need to see pics of the under the sea costume theme.  Sounds really cute.  Also, a gentle hug for your arm and how frustrating it must be.

Michelle- Good luck with your hotel adventure, I hope they have some good food for you.  I also hope you get power back soon.  We are lucky to have not lost our power.  After spending most of two weeks this summer without power I have new found new respect/pain for those without power for any period of time.  Your DH must be looking forward to some tv :)

Joyce- Sooooo jealous your leave for Fl again in Friday!  I'm glad you made it through the storm ok and still have power.

Debbie- Can't wait to see your Dolly pictures :D

Carrie- A sunset cruise. oh how I wish I could have been doing that.  I hope you had a blast.

Things have been so busy around here the past few days.  We decided to get a new woodstove and the one we got was an hour and a half away so on Friday I had a road trip to go get it.  Yesterday while my DH and I were trying to get ready for this silly storm, splitting wood, getting leaves off the lawn, winterizing the camper etc etc my brother was nice enough to set get our old wood stove out and hook our new one up.  We are not ready for winter in this house!  The boys were excited though.  Hopefully most of it melts for trick or treating.

Friday I had done a beef stew knowing I had a long day ahead of me with the driving, last night was meatloaf.  Tonight I have no idea, I need to go figure that out now and see what I have to work with.

I hope everyone is staying warm and having a good weekend.

My favorite way to eat quinoa, is for breakfast with sugar, butter, and milk. It is great .

For dinner I made butternut squash and apple soup. It is one of those flavors, you either love or hate. The kids hated it, hubby and I loved it.

Ha!  I love all your stories, I've just been too cold to keep up!  I live in a ridiculously non-insulated 1780s place with a fireplace and sleep under a down-alternative comforter and a sleeping bag (used for camping :) )  I just bought some PJs with footies and a zipper with  Eeyore's picture all over them because it's so cold.  I am surprised they make them in my size.  For dinner:

Tomato Bulgur Soup A la Moosewood Restaurant low fat favorites cookbook,

Apples, (delicious) and a loaf of bread.

    Stay warm!

No trick or treating in our town due the the power outages and downed trees and wires.

We have no power and probably will not have any until Tuesday or Wednesday, maybe longer.  CRAP no hot water either.
