i don't know.. i think pie crust with butter is pretty awesome.   I am going to try with lard tho.. very soon.

did i mention that my sour dough bread was awesome? I'm going to get so fat if i keep having these bread and butter snacks.  Next time i will add more salt, cook it quicker, perhaps in a pot or something so it will rise higher.

Carrie- Yay that Thursday is your last herceptin!!  How sweet of you to make the cookies to bring in.  Congrats!

Pupfoster- I agree, your salad sounds yummy!

Michelle and Joyce- WOAH!  What a sandwich is right!  That is almost so big it's silly, how do you eat it, fork and knife? lol!

Last night I made home made chicken tenders, scalloped potatoes and some corn.  I made banana bread during the morning and used up all my butter!  Oops, with the two little ones a quick trip to town is not a quick trip so I had to come up with a dinner that does not involve butter.

I have no idea for tonight.....

    Have a great day everyone!

does anyone have a good recipe using shrimp?  Tomorrow is fishtastic Wednesday and I am trying to plan ahead- google searches give me scampi or appetizers.....

Laurie - the first shrimp recipe that popped in my head was scampi.  I see you found another one.  My second option is shrimp cocktail, so that's not much help either!  As for that sandwich, he definitely split the meat on half of it in two.  He had them bring more bread so he'd be able to take it home and make a couple of sandwiches from the leftovers.  That's two steak knives holding it together, instead of the usual sandwich toothpick!

I went for my pre-op physical today and everything was fine.  It was kind of a waste of time as the PA didn't do anything that my MO hasn't been doing every two weeks throughout chemo.  Since it's been less than 30 days since my last one, a letter from her would have been adequate.  The only other thing I needed was an EKG which could have been done much closer to home.  Oh well, live and learn.  They told me they don't "like" to use a port (WTH???) so I told them I'd be drinking clear liquids until 4 hours before my scheduled surgery.  Otherwise, they have no hope of getting a vein for the IV.  My date with the OR is now scheduled for noon.

I guess DH doesn't want to do any cooking over the next few days.  I went to the grocery store and he told me not to get anything for making dinner.  I got breakfast stuff and some fruit.  You'd think he'd be tired of restaurants after being on vacation.  But I guess not.  I wonder how he'll handle dinner tomorrow night when I'm not going to want to go to a restaurant.  I guess that'll be curbside pickup...lol.

    Apple - I love sourdough bread...yummy!

Carberry -  a year is a very long time, I'll bet you're tired of showing up there every couple of weeks!  I'm sure they will love the cookies!

Carrie- Congrats on your last herceptin!

Joyce- I heard about the hurricane and thought about you, glad you are leaving before it may get to the us.

    Sharon- Your salad sounds yummy,

Laurie- I see that you found a good recipe for your shrimp-   Another good one I like is bacon wrapped shrimp you can grill, broil, bake or fry it- Then i serve it with a apricot horseradish glaze, just mix apricot jam ( as much as you need) with prepared horseradish, and add a little ginger and lime zest or rice wine vinegar to it, its yummy.

That's a hit when I have a Christmas Eve Party.  Not this year, DH and I are going to visit DD in Bermuda over the Christmas Holidays.  Maybe we better get our passports before we book the flight.  Next week for sure.  Had toasted tuna sandwiches for supper.  Got home late from visiting my Dad who is miss behaving with the CNA nurses, yelling and refusing to do things that they ask and somewhat confused at times.  I am told it is only going to get worse. From what I read in the log book he took a swing at one of them.  This really upsets me.

I am taking the day off tomorrow for 2 appointments, a bone density and eye exam.  In between those appointments I am asked to shop for festive decorations for the Q3 meeting at work. Oh well, it's OVERTIME.

Deborye- That is so rough with your father, I'm sure he is heavy on your heart and mind tonight.  Dementia and Alzheimer's can be such a terrible disease, it makes the people we know not know us and at times make them unrecognizable as the people we have known.  (I hope that made sense.)  (((hugs)))) to you tonight.

Thanks everyone for the shrimp ideas.  I am not a big seafood person but I try.  I did a scampi this summer that my DH loved- me not so much and the kids hated it, too much garlic.  Maybe I'll try that recipe I found.  I'll admit I am not feeling very creative:/

We'll be heading to the hospital in a few minutes - need to be there at 10:30.  I was awake at 5:30...gaack!  But that gave me time to have coffee and drink about a quart of other liquids.  Hopefully I am hydrated enough that they won't have a problem starting an IV.  I can't believe they don't want to use my port.

I have to laugh at the pre-op instructions.  They gave me a bottle of antiseptic soap to use in the shower, supposedly for three days.  Of course, I got it yesterday so I only used it this morning.  What they don't tell you (and I have to think it would make a difference) is to sleep in clean sheets, use a clean towel, put on clean PJ's and put on clean clothes after the morning shower.   If you don't do these things, you have spoiled the antibacterial effects.  And then the staff will come in to my hospital room, wash their hands and then touch the germy curtain that probably hasn't been washed in months...lol.  One of the Boston network affiliates did a story on those curtains - they are contaminated with every imaginable bacteria, including MRSA.  Yuck!  This is why it's good to get out of the hospital as soon as possible!!!

deborye   sorry that you have to see your dad like that, it is so hard on the families when you know that your dad would have never acted like that.  rest assured though that us nurses are aware of the dementia stages and what comes with it, and hopefully he has great aides and nurses that will love and care for him no matter what.

Laurie  I hear ya on the non-creative part, so tired of trying to come up with new things and please everyone.  My DH asked what the special occasion was that he was getting lasagna, cause I hate making it, and really dont like eating it either.  So I told him the occasion was... I wont have to cook for awhile and he will be eating lasagna all week long.

Tonight is hump night and since we cant be outside anymore, we will go to a local restaurant that has 1/2 price appetizers and a special on beer. Hopefully all the gang will show up, it is so hard to keep up with everyone once the weather turns and we hybernate.

Just got home a couple minutes ago.  We even stopped and had dinner at Texas Roadhouse (now I know how Rick intends to feed me over the next couple of days).

We got to the hospital around 10:30 and they got me ready.  Even though I drank plenty up until about 7:30 this morning, the first attempt at an IV was a failure so I showed the nurse where to make the second attempt.  The anesthesiologist was there along with three other nurses - it was quite a party - so the poor nurse was under a lot of pressure!

The doctor came in and marked me up about 11:45 and they took me away at about 12:20.  I remember getting from the guerney to the OR table, then it was lights out until I woke up in the Recovery Room about 2:30 or so.  Apparently, unbelievably, my Kansas Plastic Surgeon had put in 600 cc tissue expanders rather than the 375 cc ones that he told me he had inserted.  So the removal took longer than expected.  I guess I missed a big opportunity to be "boobalicious"...lol.  It's no wonder those things were so uncomfortable, they were way, way too big for me.  Rick was starting to get a little worried because of the additional time involved.  But everything was ok.

I was awake in the recovery room for probably 45 minutes.  They gave me a snack and a drink, my discharge information and then I got dressed and was out of there.  We were at Texas Roadhouse at just past 4 p.m. and we were back in the car at 4:40!

It's nice to be able to take a deep breath and not feel those obnoxious expanders!  I'm not in any pain at all, surprisingly.  You'd think it might hurt a little.  Maybe the anesthesia is still doing its job, or I was already numb from the mastectomies and it's just not going to hurt that much.  In any case, I have prescriptions for three days of antibiotics and some Tylenol with Codeine, in case I need it later.

The surgeon told Rick that he "looked around inside" after he removed the expanders and everything looked very good.  That is very good, indeed!

Recovery should be simple, I can shower tomorrow and resume all of my normal activities except I have a 10 pound weight restriction until I go back to see the doctor in 10-14 days.

Thanks, everyone, for your thoughts, prayers and well-wishes.  One more procedure done, finished, complete!

Debbie - get yourself some breast "enhancers" and a cheap but generous bra! You should be able to get that Dolly Parton look going on!

Deb - so sorry about your dad. I hope they can do something to keep him calm and comfortable. My mom is on antidepressants and it seems to be working. She sees a geriatric phychiatric nurse practitioner through her assisted living facility.

Carrie - my DH loves lasagna, too. And after everythng he's had to do (and that includes the upcoming seven weeks of driving to Boston for rads) he deserves all the lasagna he wants!

DH just came back from picking up my drugs and made a stop at the grocery store for ice cream.  I think there's a hot fudge sundae in my immediate future  Tongue out

    Laurie,

We do a lot of shrimp when we go to NC on vacation each summer since we can go to the docks and buy it as the shrimp boats come in...

We have this one every year and it is light and delicious.... Really showcases the freshness of the shrimp....

Another idea for shrimp is jambalaya...this one just came to me after Seaside's shrimp creole suggestion.   Jambalaya is really easy to make.  Here's a recipe for a slow-cooker version:

Michelle, glad to hear surgery went well and you are home.  Another procedure to cross off the list.

Deborey, I am sorry to hear about your father.  My mother has been diagnosed with Alzheimners for over 5 years.  Laurie really said it, it is so sad that they don't recognize you and you don't recognize them either.  They are not the person you knew any more.  A couple of years ago, my mother fell and had to go into a rehad facility for a while.  She did things there that she would never have done before, and it was embarassing.  She took a swing at some of the aides when they tried to get her to do something she didn't want.  And some of the mean things she said were very uncharacteristic of her personality.  But there are still good times that we have.  She is like a kid in a lot of ways.  Her face lights up when you give her an ice cream cone.  And she still has fun and laughs over lots of things.  She lives with my sister and really is very happy.  I hope your dad has lots of good days.  There are good medications that can really slow the progression.  ((((((hugs)))))))

He recognized his children, I try to see him at least 2 to 3 times a week.  I am getting second thoughts about having him over for Thanksgiving.  He is very incontinent.  We will see, if I ask my aunt and uncle over at least my uncle can help him in the bathroom when he has to go.

He was recently approved by the VA for 14 hours of homecare per day, that they will pay for.  I faxed a letter over the the PCP that examined him stating that I feel he needs more than 14 hours so the Social Worker called me at work and is going to request 20 hours, keeping my fingers crossed. The poor CNA nurses that have to clean up after his BMs and give him a shower.  He gets it on the toilet, wall, floor, safty bar, YUCK!!!

I correspond a lot with the owner of the home care that my Dad has, she said the VA takes their time in paying her.  She has a client that is VA approved and she has been caring for him since June and has not go one reimbursement check from them.  The VA has that, "hurry up and wait attitude."  She has been calling them and keeps getting transferred to this and that person and still can not get results.

My Dad was paying out of pocket for home care since April 2010, I am so relieved that he is getting help from them, he also gets a pension with aid and attendance. Home care was costing him over a thousand dollars a month, sometimes more.

Deb- that is insane that the nurse hasn't been paid for work she did back in June, how does she eat?  I remember my grandfather who had dementia was in a home specifically for people with memory issues.  He was a really nice guy, but like Kay said, would do weird random things out of character.  One day at lunch he got the end of the chips in the bag, a bunch of small pieces with a few big chips.  He went nuts, was firing everyone, trying to go in the kitchen to find the cook etc.

Thanks for the shrimp ideas ladies.  I will be honest and say I am sick of fishtastic Wednesday's:/  I don't even like fish, but I keep trying.  DH loves it, it's good for you cooked properly etc.  I'll try a few more times and then I may just give it up for awhile.  I really only like it baked stuffed ot fried, not a slmon, tuna, swordfish, shrimp fan.  That doesn't leave much.
