    Too funny.  Happy to see some information up regarding how little some of the even more respected organizations actually give money to research.  Our local university?  A portion goes to a "Dean's tax."  When I complained they said 25% overhead was standard for any charity so they didn't expect anyone to feel cheated when only 75% of contributions to the cancer center went to patients or research.  At least when I purchase a pink pizza box I know I'm being exploited.

    Hi kmmd,

    I volunteer for (and participate in) the Metro Orlando American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.  30% of the funds raised (goal of $630,000.00 this year) by that event goes to research and the other 70% stays in the local community for services, education and advocacy.  I believe that last year our expenses were 6%. You very seldom see any Strides merchanding because while groups such as Komen pay for product placement, the American Cancer Society does not.  ACS asks companies to sponsor Strides, and does not pay for them to do so.  Also, ACS has only 1 staff member dedicated to Strides, with a committee of approx 50 volunteers who do the majority of the planning and carrying out of the event, thus saving even more money.

    This is my first post ever. I am 34 yrs old and just had a double masectomy. I was diagnosed with DCIS in September. A large area was found in right breast but I decided to be safe and have both breast removed. After I found out about the cancer I also noticed pink every where, but it was also close to breast cancer awareness month. I hope all the money these companies receive truly goes to people who need help fighting bc. I don't have to have chemo or radiation and I am so grateful. These past couple of months have been the hardest in my life. I still have my reconstruction ahead of me. I don't go to a support group, but it does help to read everyone's post. I can relate to so many post I have read.
